    Funny thing about that Stihl story. I live across the street from an authorized dealer of Stihl. For the longest of time I was trying to figure out how to pronounce the company name. I finally gave up and decided to go over to the dealer and ask. The first worker I saw I walked towards him and asked "how do you pronounce your company name?" He was confused at first. After about three minutes he asked another coworker the same question. The other coworker began laughing and he said "it's pronounced as steel. You know... the heavy metal." He walks away from us still laughing. I looked back at the original worker and he was just as confused as I was.

      @@TheFallenSku l have read somewhere, some time ago that opened firebox door is making things as I said. Like in home furnance for central water heating & room heating (wood and coal fired one, gravitational water displacing system) I have one in my house, so I am familiar with principles of firing it, and making "high temp" output. You start a fire in firebox- good. But if you keep the firebox door opened some of the draft is not going from underneath the coal bed, but above it, decreasing amount of heats and steams. It is look like it will induce more draft (so more air, heat&steams) but really this air is going straight to the stack, missing coal in the way, carying most of the unburned gases with it. So you will eventually run to a problem "I'm shoveling a lot of fuel, but I have little, to no efect on a temp/steam generation. What is going on? "
      Why? Because up to a certain point some of the gases are not heating up your boiler, but taking "bypass" route instead.
      Sorry bro, I'm not native english speaker. If some part of this sound for you like gibberish nonsense, I will try my best to make things easier to understand

    Oh yeah, I've bought DM3 early and it was quite fun. But most importantly - powerful! I didn't look up the shifting patterns, just memorized the appropriate positions and have some idea of what gera I need to be in. I frequently brake by downshifting even. I got quite good at this. Flip the throttle to zero, ka-dunk the gearbox, throttle back to max. It's so powerful, yet max speed isn't high at all.
    I haven't watched the video far enough to see Hyce actually drive the DM3, but I already noticed how he shifts. When you need to switch through 2 gearboxes (meaning - you need to flip the levers on both gearboxes), it's best to do so by first selecting a higher gear, then the lower appropriate one. Yes, you can stall the engine, but if you overheat or get too many rpms, you can explode it. I think it's obvious which one is for the better.

      @@Hyce777 Haven't watched the episode yet, but I noticed once you left one non-self lapping automatic in running in a previous episode which made the whole train dump the brake pressure with the other valve in the cab you were in in lap. Dunno if this is weird and different to how it works IRL (to me it makes sense since you basically command to release the brakes at one point in the train), but basically in DV you want them all sitting in lap instead of release while having multiple of those in the consist. Most importantly to notice here: When saving the game and loading up at a later time, they all reset to running, so you'd always have to check and set them up that one notch again. Would appreciate a real 101 video on that BTW, I think you haven't covered multi loco behaviour on that in your previous ones.

    The sawmill has a really bad hill at the north end of the yard. I noticed when I parked the S282 to service it there that the tender handbrake wasn't actually enough to hold the engine if it had even the tiniest bit of momentum left over. On a whim I released the brake and let the engine coast down hill as far as it would go completely dark. No lubricator, compressor, or dynamo. I thought it would crash somewhere, but it made it all the way to the wye by the Steel Mill without derailing, making that lovely grinding sound the whole way.

    The DM3 has a fluid coupling in it, the wheels aren't connected to the engine by a rigid connection.
    You can see this by simply applying the break while having the reverser set. The engine will not stall, even tho the wheels are not moving at all.
    Edit: you can "double" the hill by splitting your train with a few locos pushing from behind. It won't help with the weight, but it will prevent explosions, as you only have to look at one loco/set of locos at a time, you won't have to run between the head and trail ends of the train

    • @roadtrain_
      @roadtrain_ ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you sure? I thought DM3 was direct coupling, the DH4 is fluid.

    • @jackgamer6307
      @jackgamer6307 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@roadtrain_ There is a fluid coupling but not like the DH4s. In the DH, the oil carries power from the engine to the wheels in hoses.
      In the DM3, there is still a fully mechanical transmission, but at some point in the linkage, there is a fluid coupling inserted along the drive shaft. Think of it as an automatic clutch, but it's not perfect. You can still stall the engine, but it lets you stop the loco with the engine technically in gear.

    I have doubled the hill once in Derail Valley, coming out of the harbor with a train that was a little too much for a DE2. Ran the first cut up to the wye at the northwest end of the canyon, shoved it in there, then ran back for the other half. Fortunately I didn't have to double anywhere else that trip. Especially on those long stretches, sidings for this sort of thing (or for people who make the multiplayer mod work) would be really useful!

  • @brunoais
    @brunoais ปีที่แล้ว +9

    33:57: It's almost mechanically tied. There's an with a torque converter oil fluid coupling engine with the wheels. However unlike the DH4 where the fluid is loosely tied, in the DM3 it's a very hard oil coupling.

    • @GregoryVeizades
      @GregoryVeizades ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its not a torque converter. Its a fluid coupling.
      Torque Converters are also a fluid coupling, but instead if relying solely on fluid friction, they have essentially turbine blades inside. So the fluid in a Torque Converter transfers torque from input to output by shoving the fluid with the driving turbine blades into the driven turbine blades.

    32:34: It doesn't have a clutch just like an oil-bound gearbox in an automatic gearbox. However, there's gears on both sides of those oil-bound plates. The noise when throttle is not idle is just the same while it should be different depending on how much load the engine has (grinding noise is not simulated). The damage based on how much power the engine had is simulated, though.
    You can look at the game "diesel railcar simulator" for more trains with this kind of gearbox

    I absolutely love the DM3 and wish there were more trains like it in derail valley. The gears are funny in that it's simulating two gearboxes with one mounted backwards. So the long and short of shifting is that the right side is your selector and your left side is your range until you get to 2:2 and then it's reversed and your left side is your 1,2,3 and the right is your range. As for how it shifts without a clutch it essentially has a torque converter like on an automatic car so it's a semi-automatic gearbox. Yes this is dumb and inefficient which is why they were not that popular. See the British Fell locomotive for the most bats--t example of this kind of design

    • @brunoais

    Walking the left stick all the way up and then walking the right stick all the way up is actually a pretty good, simplified shift pattern. So: 1-1 to 2-1 to 3-1 to 3-2 to 3-3. That's five speeds, with each shift skipping one of the available speeds (which you can often do, since a lot of the final gear ratios are pretty close to each other). And because you are only ever moving one lever, you don't have to worry about the order in which you need to move the levers. You might sometimes need to use 2-3 (which comes between 3-2 and 3-3), but I feel like the rest of the skipped gears are mostly optional.

    When shifting the DM3 always start with both in the "Low" or "1" position. Progress through the gears like 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 2-1, 2-2, 2-3, 3-1, 3-2, 3-3. The right stick moves three positions first before moving the left stick one position.

    The way you were describing the DM3 transmission is basically exactly how some farm tractor transmissions work, notably the old John Deere 6200 series tractors that I used to drive. You had 4 forward gears (1, 2, 3, and 4) and 4 ranges (A, B, C, and D), the idea being you had more control over your ground speed vs actual engine RPMs and you didn't need an insanely long and complicated transmission with 16 actual gears to do it.
    I think the DM3 is modeled after a British Rail Class 03 shunter, which did use a mechanical transmission (along with some other early British diesel traction like the Class 101 DMUs). It's actually a semi-automatic transmission with epicyclic gearing in the real thing, there was no clutch pedal like in a car. Another thing you might notice is that it almost looks like it has 8 wheels, but it's actually 6 wheels driven by a jackshaft.

  • @OnyxBMW
    @OnyxBMW ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Fun thing about the DM3. With proper use of the gearbox, it can, indeed, trivially haul up about 600-700 tonnes up every single hill in the game you'd reasonably use the DM3 on (read: not coal mine, not the DE6 slug hill, honorable mention for east harbor exit.) I also looked at you setting up 1900+ tonnes of cargo with an engine that can struggle to do 1000 in ideal conditions up that hill and knew I had to get popcorn. I was not disappointed.
    As a note, I have doubts the DM3+S282 could have done that load safely. Maybe with perfect play, maybe, it would be extremely borderline as the DM3 really doesn't enjoy 800 tonnes up that hill and the S282 with a running start can only just manage about 1000.

  • @jan_franzke
    @jan_franzke ปีที่แล้ว

    Regarding coal prices: one heritage railroad in germany tries to convert a (small) coal burning loco to wood pellets to be able to keep running once coal is gone. They fitted the engine with lots of sensors and did performance and efficiency test with it.

  • @arthuraldridge2219
    @arthuraldridge2219 ปีที่แล้ว

    Did a test in the sandbox. It is possible to haul the entire order using a single S282 from the steel mill to the harbor. The train needed to be driven perfectly at max power and with a large runup from between the two bridges north of the steel mill. Total mass of haul was 1995 tons, 35 rail cars.

  • @hoakuroija1089
    @hoakuroija1089 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    DE2 runs cooler facing forwards. Other engines probably don't matter, at least DH4 heats the same both directions and can always be run at the second hardest notch.
    DM3 is better to be in too high of a gear than too low, no harm in heating the oil a little (but not too much). Gear pattern was basically correct, but it gets weird at the higher end. Easiest to just not use high first. The jump between low third and mid first is a bit great but don't think it as a problem.
    Thanks for all the entertainment. It's at it's best when trying not to blow anything up on purpose.

      Probably not, because of what happened (the whole keume drama thing). Wouldn't mind them playing it again at some point though when it gets some fair progress in development, since that'd be good sportsmanship (I mean, he literally is part of the competition with Studio 346 now, who try to make their dream come true by making a similar, but better game/sim) and players simply would like to watch this, I guess...

    on thee dm3 shifting up isn't a problem it's more shifting down (no free wheeling device), also because it has a fluid coupeling you can't actually bump start it, (but it locks the transfear case if you kick it on at speed?). but like an LKW running light you can set of in like 4th gear.
    disclaimer: i never sat in the cab of a locomotive
