I believe that the bolt would still get very hot over time in some cases due to the lack of thermal isolation

I've tested so far 400f pit temp for 1 hour and bolt is only warm to touch. I agree, extended time and exposure to heat would eventually get hot. I will be testing out some silicone caps.

I just tap the vent with the grilling utensil. No issues. This is neat but I would still find a way to burn my fingers. I'm sticking with the tap method

Yep. I've used an old pair of grilling tongs for years to move lit coals around and tap the dampers.

    Push it with the tong!

Yep, that's what I typically do. I have a set I leave hanging on the handle that I also use to move lit coals around with if needed. Just thought this was a fun and easy little mod.

I can’t imagine that metal screw not getting super hot too!

So far it's done just fine and only warm to the touch after one hour with a pit temp of 400f. I cook with a 2 Zone setup and my damper is never directly over lit coals. I do have some high heat silicone caps that I will put over the bolt if it becomes an issue. Thanks for swinging by!

Personally I'd use a screw in a wooden dowel, what killed me to see, though, was the usage of channel locks to tighten that with such a small amount of movement.

      Sorry, bolt, not screw.

Good idea. So far the bolt hasn't heated up beyond warm after running the pit at 400f for about an hour. If it starts to get hotter, I've got high heat silicone caps I can slip over to handle it. I hope you will be able to recover from the small movement observation.

@@3GTBBQ You may be good then, especially if you have to utilize the caps. I believe I will recover it'll just take some therapy.

Wood cover on the screw would be better

I've got some high heat silicone caps I'll throw on if the bolt gets hot. Wood would look nicer for sure

LOL! Tap it with the spatula to move it. Duh....

I prefer an old set of tongs that also double as a lit coal mover. Far superior to a wimpy spatula. This is just a simple damper mod for those that would prefer to not purchase the weber premium damper.
