    Thanks Dan for posting! I built one loosely following your directions but including a short carbon fiber spar as the stiffener inside tubular webbing, but the thing works like a charm and I wear it all day without a thought; nothing to do but connect my rope whenever I need it. Super slick!

    Hi Dan, I've been following your videos since long time...Excellent job! Very informative and educational! I'm about to build something like your knee ascender. Here's one question: I have a Pantin for the right foot that I would like to use for my left knee with your system. You think I would't have any problem with that or it is stricly necessary to wear a left Pantin mounted on the knee ascender of my left leg? Just to avoid buying another one and maybe using the one that I already have. What do you reckon? Have you experimented also with other ascenders? Any suggestions? I'm afraid the Pantin has that kick back rope slippage problem and that's why I turned into a CT quick step foot ascender. Thank you...

    Thanks for sharing your design. I hope something positive for you comes of this as you have discovered the complexities and frustrations of patent/manufacturing. I personally suggest that you don’t worry about patent/copyright and do what has been done with the BulldogBone device. It’s not a life support device, so I say make some and sell them. There’s plenty of guys that would purchase them. Have people sign a release of liability to purchase. You might be surprised how many people will want one. Thanks again.

      Climbing Arborist
      Especially if you put a kit together that allows the operator to use his or her own ascender or have the option to purchase one through you, that would be a big game changer. I’d say almost all of us have a chest ascender or a flat ascender like the SAKA/SAKA mini uses that we aren’t using. I know I have two of them. If you sold your set up all ready to go and all I had to do was attach my ascender, I’d buy one in a heart beat. I would also buy the whole shebang from you if the ascender was one of the Notch Jet Step foot ascenders mounted as a knee ascender!!

    I would like to make one of these and was wondering if you have any updates since this video is 3 years old. So you still like the Pantin or is there a better foot ascender option? I was looking at the CT ascender that locks in the rope. Any experience with that, or should I stick with the original non locking Pantin? Thanks for the great idea and any pointers before I start making one would be much appreciated.

  • @AmazonDeal
    @AmazonDeal ปีที่แล้ว

    might be a weird question but why do you clip a carabiner to the knee ascender after you put the rope in the ascender?

  • @hosocat1410
    @hosocat1410 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Outstanding! I was monkeying around with this concept, and tried just strapping an ascender below my knee, but the strap cut into the soft tissue below my knee and was too painful. Running support down to the foot is the key. Well done! Have you considered finding a plastic swivel mechanism to attach the ascender to, that you could then rivet to the leg strap? Love seeing new ideas. Thanks.

    • @ClimbingArborist
      @ClimbingArborist  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the strap on your version must have been a little to high, I've played around with it and when it is really close to the knee it isn't comfortable.
      I have been playing with a new ascender and a pivoting mechanism, we shall see how that works out

  • @robthompson1399
    @robthompson1399 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's a great idea, I think it's a job for aluminium. I know it wouldn't be as comfortable, but it'd work a ton better. Not a hunk of aluminium like a gaff leg. Just a tidy bar, maybe with a ridge up the middle to prevent any bending. The same thickness material as the pantin is made from, about 3mm.
    A real development would be a specially made ascender to go on the end. With the bar locating in a round hole at the top, to act as the pushing pivot. And an ark/semicircle slot at the bottom of the ascender, through which, a support stud passes to allow the standing force to be applied efficiently and load the ascender correctly.
    OR... here's an afterthought idea... one central hole in the ascender body for pushing, rotating, and loading ! The long and short is, you need to approach DMM, and develop the idea with them. It's not really the strap so much as the actual pantin. The idea is great.
    Great idea though, top marks ! I'm now going through eBay for cheap chinese parts that I can chop up to make one 🤪

  • @EgaoKage
    @EgaoKage 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Typically, if you're right handed, your left leg will be stronger. Think about it like jumping. If you're trying to get as much vertical travel as you possibly can, you'll jump extending your dominant hand upwards. And, doing so, you're left foot will leave the ground last. So as to extend your body diagonally, for maximum reach. So, it makes complete sense to use a foot ascender on whichever foot is opposite to your dominant hand. Personally, my favorite knee ascender is the original SAKA. But thanks to a patent held by Weaver, its barred from sale. I was lucky enough to find one on Amazon, of all places, for the two weeks they were available there..

    I’ve got to be honest, the explanation was helpful but still a bit too vague, you need a close up overhead shot of the ascender as your explaining, from what I gathered from your explanation is some webbing, some tubing and an ascender attached loosely somehow to it all. I’m super interested. But I need a bit more detail

    Maybe I missed it but where did the thick tether that everything is attached to come from?

      Life is better when we share and help others to be safe, I am sure I will be using this method as soon as I am able to sort one out. Unfortunately I was a passenger in a head on collision six weeks ago and I am still in casts on wrist and broke my sternum on the seat belt.
      Typical I get hurt not from being in a tree but in a car I had no control of.
      Good luck in all you do !
      Thanks again
      Garry from England

    Hey Dan, great design! Do you think this design would benefit from the rollers on the camp turbo foot ascender?

    • @ClimbingArborist
      @ClimbingArborist  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think those rollers are more gimmick than useful to be honest

  • @jefffriedman6942
    @jefffriedman6942 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Is there a reason you don't use an autolocking ascender other than compatibility with the ability to attach it in a way that allows rotation? This is an invention that reduces the need to take things on and off, so I'd think eliminating the need for those locking carabiners (regardless of how fast you are with them) would be beneficial, no?

    • @ClimbingArborist
      @ClimbingArborist  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you see on the version on the desk and the version in the work climb and rescue comp it has an auto locking mechanism, just the first version didn't

    Have you tried it with the CT or any other brand? Do you recomend using the Pantin over others?

    • @ClimbingArborist
      @ClimbingArborist  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've tried a few chest ascenders and camp foot ascender, the panting has worked the best so far, but I'm testing out others with pivot points

      I want to make one with the CT simple cause its nice and compact and lays flatter than most of the other chest ascenders. The one I have right now I just threw together with a Kong chest ascender, the loop end of a ratchet strap with a strap adjustment to change the length easily and a doubled piece of shock cord over the shoulder hooked to my saddle. It works for getting in the tree but kind of annoying having to take it off everytime then finding a place to keep it. Usually just shove it in my little throw line pouch lol this looks like a much better design though.

    • @ClimbingArborist
      @ClimbingArborist  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, Ive not made a commercial product, there are a lot of variable so its not as simple as you'd think. We are still tinkering though so maybe we'll have one for the market.

    • @ClimbingArborist
      @ClimbingArborist  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No tried it, I imagine you would probably want to do something different if you wanted a second two ascenders first Spurs

    • @TheToolnut
      @TheToolnut 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed, something to think about I suppose. I have the Haas Velox and it's main draw back is one has to take it off to work the tree. I might get some heavy duty velcro and manufacture a calf strap or maybe two. Srt has some big advantages over Mrs but that said it isn't a silver bullet either. Happy Christmas, 👍 😁 🎅

    Nice job! I figured as soon as I saw it that it would be as you said, doesn't quite get the step as some of the others. I would think the convenience of it will make up for that. Can you use it in conjunction with spur's?

    • @ClimbingArborist
      @ClimbingArborist  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers bro, with the new one I made I get a longer stride but probably still not quite as long as the other. I don't think you would want to use it with spurs if you already had a spikecender as you would most likely spike yourself in the legs

    How much does the Pantin foot ascender damage a rope? Seems like the sharp point would wear out the rope quickly.

    • @ClimbingArborist
      @ClimbingArborist  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      All these type of cam ascenders are designed for this purpose, if they damaged the ropes they wouldn't be allowed in tree work, rope access, search and rescue etc

    This is definitely marketable. U just need short, med, long for different legs. The strap position is critical.

    Have you tried some type of the S.A.K.A?

    • @ClimbingArborist
      @ClimbingArborist  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I’ve tried the SAKA mini as the original is no longer available. I hate the whole bunny part of those type of knee ascenders and I couldn’t get the ascender to recoil well enough for a consistent stride. I’m not saying it’s a bad device but it’s only ever used for the initial ascent and then is taken off.
