    Checkers and draughts is the same thing, just American vs. UK English. There are many variants with different board sizes and opening piece configurations. The one that you're playing is the Polish version, which has become the international competitive standard.

      The site also has the Frisian variant, which allows horizontal and vertical captures as well. In recent years it has gotten increased attention because of the reduced amount of draws. The end games are a lot more complex.

    Try GO. Unlike Draught or checkers that have similarities to chess like each piece can move to location, Go is very counter intuitive and you can put your pieces everywhere. It has the same kind of elimination process like chess but the tactics are different than chess.

    Hey Eric, great video!
    As a draughts player myself i can say that believe it or not, you've escaped a trap set on move one!
    On your game against "yduaskme" you opened with 1.32-28(and yes it's very popular) and your opponent played 1...18-23 but clearly he wasn't going for the "trap" as he didn't punished you for 2.37-32?? that should cost you 2 pieces after 2...23-29! 3.33x24(_if 3.34x23 17-22 4.28x17 19x26_) 20x29 4.34x23 17-22 5.28x17 19x26 and your piece on square 17 is lost. But he didn't go for this and i'm surely not gonna ask him why :).

    Hi Eric, at 12:30 you wondered where draughts is popular. A lot of kids learn the game in the Netherlands, lots of chess boards have a backside with a 10x10 board here. I played the game in elementary school for a year, the next year chess was available and I thought that game looked much more interesting. The current world champion is dutch, there's also a lot of good african players and former soviet (mainly non-russian) players (Belarus mainly I believe).

Also, as an answer to some of the questions you asked: 1.the "pawns" in draughts is what we call pieces. 2. Draughts is very popular in the former sovjet union, (Russia, Ukraine, Belarus etc.) aswell as some west european countries, Like The Netherlands (my home country). If you have some additional questions feel free to ask :).

    In 2022, is there still a "world correspondence (or mail/postal/daily) checkers champion?" If so, who is it? I have played chess my entire life and want to improve at checkers but not the type in this video. Traditional American checkers (sorry if I got the name wrong for the checkers/draughts players out there) is something I wish to study and improve. The website for the American Checkers Federation is outdated. Sorry if my question seems so basic that everyone should know the answer. However, we all must begin to learn by asking questions and any quality information will be most appreciated. Great video!!

    I noticed you spend a decent amount of time trying to figure out where a commenter said you missed a tactic to promote. I believe on move 48 (1:27:04), you could've moved your rightmost piece toward the right edge (the move you instead played on move 51) followed by its adjacent piece moving up and diagonally to the right in a path to the promotion square which cannot be prevented. Does this seem correct?

    • @timvermeulen4024

      It can be prevented since all pieces can capture backwards :) So after 21-26 and 27-31 (let me know if you need help with the notation), white can do 42-38 after which both black and white are forced to capture.

    Edit: never mind you addressed it in the stream a couple minutes later XD

    Checkers is The American name and Draughts is the English name. What you are playing is a variation, called Polish Draughts/Checkers.

    • @exedeath
      @exedeath 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is dama, unlike chess where there is a specific game called chess, each country or world region has their own version of the thing that is considered "the game"

      10 X 10 international draughts is not "solved." Only American checkers is.

    For anyone who doesn’t know it’s just Russian checker with a bigger board and more pieces. Russian checkers you can jump backwards and queen moves like this game copied. I played since I was child

    • @_APV_
      @_APV_ 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can choose any variant of capturing in russian checkers, not the one with most pieces like here. Also, if you move to enemy back rank while capturing you instantly become a king and can keep capturing pieces that are more than 1 square away, here you have to stay at the back rank for 1 turn to become king.
