  • Mike Rutherford is angry and ashamed at the dangerous planning of certain roads around the country and discusses the effects of such roads with Ted Clements - who's the road safety advisor for the institute of advanced motorists, former chief examiner of IAM and a former police officer.

    Nobody is asking for lorries to take bends at 40. It’s called a limit. Not a necessity. Plus forget the speed limit, it’s more important to drive in accordance to the road conditions.
    The speeds are set with good conditions in mind, so if it’s wet, icy, dark or there is limited visibility then you adjust your speed to match.

    It's not compulsory to drive at 60mph one should drive to the conditions of the road the max speed sign is not an order. The female who died died from dangerous driving not because the road can be driven at 60...IT'S NOT A TARGET!

    Drive to the conditions, raining go slower, corners slow down. You do tests for a reason there's no point having theory tests if you want to have speed limits at 20 for every hazard its up to the driver to drive carefully and keep alert not road signs and the Goverment.

    I got to visit England a few years ago, and I tend to agree. They're roads are rather tricky, to say the least, to drive. It's even worse if you're a pedestrian. The footpaths (sidewalks) are barely enough for one person walking, never mind two people walking side-by-side. I remember walking along a sidewalk with some friends on the outskirts of Plymouth, when I wanted to walk in front of the other person in front of me, so I had to step onto the road. That wasn't very smart of me. As soon as I did that, I felt something hit my arm. I wasn't hurt, but it did startle me. I remember saying *"bugger!"* before getting back onto the sidewalk. The roads aren't very wide in some places, nor are the sidewalks. Both need to be widened to make for safer and easier walking for pedestrian.

    The first two and a half minutes. The logical solution is to convert a section of the hard shoulder to a slip road. There are other places on motorways where the hard shoulder disappears for a short section, for example where a bridge is too narrow. The Southern England solution would be to install traffic lights.

    60 mph / 96 kph limit on that road is madness, here in Sweden that road would have a speed limit of 60 kph / 37,5 mph or even less. Only 2+1 roads in Sweden have a 100 kph / 62 mph speed limit, motorways have 110 kph / ~70 mph. The national speed limit in Sweden is 70 kph / 44 mph outside dense populated areas.
    05:20 Myself living on a street like that, there's no way that would be a 30 mph / 48 kph road here, that is max a 30 kph / ~19 mph road here.

  • @jasoncarpp7742

    The problem exists here in the USA. There are sidewalks that are way too narrow for two people to walk on, or even ride their bicycles on. They're not only too narrow, but they're angled in such a way to make walking difficult, if not impossible to safely do. If it was a neighbourhood street, it wouldn't be so bad, since the speed limit is around 20mph, and it'd be easier to stop, but on a busy stretch of road, where the speed limit is around 40 mph, it'd be way too dangerous.

    • @britiw
      @britiw 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      it's illegal to ride a push bike on a pavement in UK. They are all on the roads, no matter high viz on or off, lights on or off same as reflectors and of course seriously taking person or a complete crackhead on a £10 rusty bike wobbling side to side

    DVSA guidance I'm guessing has changed since then as you are no longer taught to drive to the speed limit, but rather the conditions of the road around you. Some people take that wrong though and argue they should be able to do 70mph in a 60 and 90 on a dual carriageway which is bonkers because they clearly don't understand physics. No brakes would be able to save you from a higher speed collision and the reaction time given when people don't abide by the 2 second rule as you see nearly everyone doing is extremely limited. Human reaction times just aren't good enough. Then you see people argue that there are worse drivers able to legally drive just as fast as them and think they deserve that extra speed which is just pure arrogance.

    So this guy is doing a dangerous roads video and he parks his car on a sharp left hand bend, puts his hazards on, and sits there, talking about him doing 15-20mph and a child on a bike going into him.
    Park your car up in a safe place, get out and film it, safely.

    "She died because the speed limit is wrong." No, she died because she chose to drive too fast for the conditions. Unfortunately there is a tendency in the UK to blame anyone except the driver after a fatal road accident, and an even worse tendency to accuse people of victim blaming even in cases when the victim was in fact entirely responsible for their demise. If people don't learn from mistakes, they just keep making the same ones over and over again, with the same results.
