I love herring! In the Netherlands it's soooooo good! Actually in Russia herring is very popular as well. I'm really surprised at the Russians' reaction in the video🤔
It has been known in Poland for centuries, not only as the basis of diets during periods of fasting, but also a tasty and healthy snack. Even before 1939, restaurants served it as an appetiser before lunch, usually with a shot of cold vodka.
That's interesting. It's also centuries old here in The Netherlands. Perhaps we had some interaction one way or the other. We had a strong connection through trade by the Hanseatic League, shipping grain from Poland to Dutch ports (something which is still ongoing today). Gdansk had a considerable sized Dutch community with influence afaik (traders). One of my ancestors came from there. Trade was done all the way along the coast up to the Baltic Sea.
Everywhere along the north sea and baltic coast. Scandinavia, Baltics, Poland, Northern Germany. There's so much herring in the seas here. I bet it started because some of the fishers got hungry and just started eating raw fish by grabbing it from the tail and they were like, hey this is pretty good.
Scientists have discovered that the reason for this is, by the fashion the Dutch eat it, the freshly-chopped onions will be near the eyes. Having your head tilted back, the tears draw backward and end up in the oral cavity, both watering the mouth and already including some salt. The long-term effect is to make the Dutch anticipate the salty herring; in the short term it desensitizes the mouth so that the overly-salted herring tastes only a little more salty.
LMAO as a dutch being, I love herring. But I can imagine that I would be just as horrified with fried crickets and spiders or thick juicy worms that are very normal delicacies in other cultures.

I'm Japanese and my Dutch bf told me about herring. For me that looks delicious ( because of I'm used to eat raw fish.) I'm so curious how it tastes, and looking forward to try it one day:)
