Growing up in Florida in the 80s we had family in New York Virginia Toronto. My mom had a "Happy times" Chevy conversion van. Needless to say I've been here a few times. The last time was 2006 and my heart almost sank because of the ghost town vibes. Loved the year round fireworks. Both parents are gone now but I will never forget. Thank you!

@@letsgoseeit457 Same. We live in South Florida now and are about to make the trip to Virginia. I haven't been to South of the Border since 1989 when I was 10. It's soul-crushing seeing the signs so faded.
You could barely find a parking spot back then, day or night. The signs used to be a fun mile-marker as we traveled. My dad even bought a coffee-table book of the road signs last time we went.
Now, I'm a dad and I was looking forward to my kiddo being able to see it. We're going to go anyway, but at least I'm prepared for the sadness.

I remember as a kid excitedly waiting for each sign as my dad drove from Virginia to South Carolina. And then getting there and see Pedro. Good memories.

As a kid growing up in the 1960's, our family would take a yearly vacation, driving from Maryland to Florida and back. We always stopped at South of the Border, and it was packed full of people back then. It was still a travel destination for many more years.
Unfortunately the founder of South of the Border, Alan Schafer, died in 2001. Since he died, it seems like the place has gone downhill very quickly. It's sad to see that it is like a ghost town now. 😢😢
The newer Buc-ee's that opened in 2022 in Florence, South Carolina, is less than 30 miles from South of the Border, and is now the travel destination in that area.

I agree with you that, Buc-ee’s he is definitely the new travel destinations layover stop. I’m sorry that I wasn’t around to see South of the Border in all his glory. Thank you for leaving such a thoughtful comment.

I visited there in …1966. It was a blast for us kids. Our parents NEVER let us have fireworks, except once, when we got them here. I’m a surgeon but my side gig is professional fireworks display operator. I credit SOB for planting a seed in that endeavor! No matter what shape the place is in now, I want to go back and relive the memory. The place was a gas, man.
