I grew up in upstate NY and we ALWAYS stopped there when we went to Florida. Great memories! Been years since I have been there.
We live in New Jersey and we do the same thing
stayed here back in the 90's with my parents on our yearly summer trips from NY to FL

I think the HR property has now started to be secured for new development. Adam the Woo was at the property a few months ago and it seemed to be fenced off pretty securely.

Very curious what the financial impact Buc-ee’s has had on SoB since it opened in Florence. While they are 30 minutes apart on 95, I think a lot of people that would stop at SoB are now driving past to stop at Buc-ees. I always stop at SoB and it’s sad when I mention the place to people, most of them make a face and say it’s run down. I love SoB!🎉🎉🎉
i know that buccee's does almost a million in sales on national holidays and from what i've heard about this summer season already....they might be knocking that down every weekend this summer

@@authorthomasmilleragreed! Yes! But… when the owner of any property or structure applies for historical designation, there are a lot of hoops to jump through and guidelines that have to be followed going forward.
Loved the video, my family use to stop here a fair number of times as a kid back in the 80's, and 90's going to see family in NC, but I've not been back in sometime, but good to see SoB still hanging in there despite the buc-ee's I hope they can adapt, and find new ways to keep people coming.
So totally worth the time to watch. I am so glad you made this video. I have to get out more since I never knew this place existed. Thanks for the tour, I can't wait for the next one. Adventure on !
I've stayed in the motel there a few times because it was pet friendly. This was about 20 years ago. Most of the rooms were not updated - in a good way. Had the original retro 60's-70's charm in the rooms. I think most of the rooms were updated a few years ago to be more modern. (I prefer the original mid-century look myself as long as it's clean and well maintained). Loved getting the pecan log rolls in the gift shop - a guilty pleasure.

In the mid 70s my cousins/aunt/uncle from N.J. took a road trip to Florida. On the way down they stopped here. They gave me and my brothers (from Ohio) a South of the Border bumper sticker. Fast forward to early 2023 and I saw something about South of the Border somewhere. I thought I would take a motorcycle trip (from Ohio) to there and a few other spots in the Southern states. I was just planning to stop for an hr or so and gas up, walk around, get a bite to eat and go up in the tower. Well, the tower was closed. The elevator was closed due to maintenance. But the place was so cool and tacky I decided to stay two nights. The hotel room was dated but I didn't mind at all. Parked my motorcycle right next to my door. And the outdoor pool was a 2 minute. walk Ate at most of the restaurants multiple times. I think the fast-food restaurant was closed. Behind the truck stop there's a motocross track. Did the reptile lagoon. Hung out at the pool and just had a relaxing and enjoyable time. It bugged me that the tower wasn't open and planned to return. Well, this Spring I plan to return and hopefully go up in the tower.

Drove by it many times going to Florida never stopped. After seeing your video I will have to stop next time. Maybe even stay there and have more time to check everything out.

Went to Myrtle Beach and always wanted to go there. Bucket list with Buccees. Actually my next trip is to Erie, PA in July or first weekday in August.
Last week up to pa last week. Sure thought of you being up by waynesburg, pa. I sure went to bucces going back home. But drove by sob going up to pa. Just need to go there next time going by that way . Even, though i only live by Myrtle Beach, sc

I loved the Pedro says signs. I miss them, i guess alot are not politically correct. I still have a bowl i got there in 1986. So many gift shop finds! Thanks for sharing. They did update when Buckees started building.
Same I loved seeing those signs as a kid on our way to see family in NC, and I say if people can't take a lighthearted joke screwem they ain't worth hanging around. Also i still have some shot glasses in my Tiki bar I got from there sometime back in the mid 90's.
I've actually visited South Of The Border a few times and have passed the park since I was a kid. They've got cool shops, too bad there are no rides left. I love the sombrero!
Sadly I don't think they were getting enough business to justify the upkeep, maintenance, and cost of liability insurance for the rides, which is understandable, but they could at least add some better arcade games to the arcade at the Sombrero tower, and advertise it as a stop for arcade enthusiast

I hope SoB can hang on, but even after they have done some upgrading, including the taco stand… I am thinking it might have to find another way to adapt.
@@charlestonpinballarcade They really need to upgrade the Sombrero tower arcade, and advertise it as a big feature for arcade enthusiast with a good mix of new, and older games, and then maybe advertise a good retro gaming, computer conventions something as South Carolina really does not have that many.

Not much traffic and much open space within the shops, no lack of inventory, but not the customer business and excitement the bucees has. Maybe sob has to update to be competitive. I imagine they are more crowded on the weekends from Thursday up. Yeah, the displays and bins are spread out too much, compared bucees or a dollar stores you like showcasing.
I wounder what happened to the rides. Dose anyone know? I never got to ride them!
