  • In Day 5 of our "How To Sample" series we look at notes of indeterminate length. Sustained notes, strings, synths and even a tremolando piano. For this you need to use the loop function. We show you how to do this simply in both Kontakt and Logic Sampler.

Can you apply loops to multiple samples at once?

QUESTION - can you change the behaviour of stretched notes like in Ableton. i.e. stretched notes play slower or faster vs maintaining time when pitched. ???

I'm fairly new to making my own samples and logic sampler user. I was wondering whether it's possible to create an instrument like this, with movement (tremolando or glitches etc) but for the rhythm/pattern be uniform across all notes even when triggered at different times. Hopefully someone understands what I mean as it's hard to put in writing. For example in this instance could you have a chord of tremolando all moving at the same time rather than each note twinkling independently?

As i don't know much about the internal workings of Kontakt, is it possible to add protamento effect to a controller knob in Kontakt?

Definitely possible with some scripting. What's easier is there's a built in "glide" control in Kontakt. When you open up the editor, there's a SOURCE section where you can control tuning. Click on "Mod" in the source section to open up source modulation settings. Click "add modulator..." and under others you'll see "glide". By default it should be routed to pitch. That should give you portamento control. Maybe you can set that to a midi controller knob, I'm not sure.

Hi Christian! Loving the stuff you put out, but i have a question. I might be totally blind but i can't for the life of me find a video on your or Pianobooks youtube on how to make super simple sampleinstrument with more than 1 recorded note and multiple velocity layers. Like a sampling 101. There are tons of great tips and tricks on sampling (like sampling 102) but not the total basics. I would love that. Because i'm trying and it isn't working out.... If anyone knows about such videos, please let me know! As i said, maybe i missed them...
Thanks again for all you do.

I think what you're looking for is 'How To Make Samples Day #2' and 'How To Make Samples Day #4'. Both the videos are
      on the Pianobook TH-cam channel.

These videos are great, thanks. I have sampled a lovely sounding French harmonium. I can make nice loops using free software. I will never be able to afford Kontakt so I am trying a free VST called Grace by Onesmallclue. I hope eventually to make a very simple virtual instrument. Does anyone else use Grace?
