Brilliant tutorial! For me, this has finally unlocked the mystery of sampling instruments using Reaper and Kontakt. I've learned a ton of stuff from this one and am now working my way through sampling an old Casio MT-40. Thanks very much David.
Thank's again for the video. Today I sampled my piano and created my first Kontakt instrument, and this video was a life saver. Super appreciative that you took the time to make it. Cheers
This is one of the best tutorials I've ever watched! And your double-role as a technician and a creative artist is just adorable! A thousand thank-yous from my side!
I struggled with work computers from the first days c. 1990. I felt like the last dinosaur looking at the first mammal. Your fluidity with the software is awesome! Adobe Illustrator and PhotoShop set the bar! Revolutionary, in fact. They re-thought what it is to draw, and to digitize the darkroom. BTW, I took an electronic music with Shep Shapiro at Brown U. back in the day. We had an oscillator that made 3 different sound waves, a keyboard, and 1/2" reel-to-reel tape recorder. That was it!
Well. I have to say, after recording, it really didn't take much time to get a functioning library that I can actually use. This is absolutely brilliant. You have opened the doors to creativity to a lot of people. Well done, and a huge thank you!
Excellent Tutorial I kind of knew whats involved in making samples but watching this has given me so much to appreciate and the smooth flow of this tutorial is actually very catchy and addictive regardless oh how much detailed work needs to be done. BRAVO! and VERY REWARDING and VERY USEFUL. Thanks so much!
There is an SWS action called "Split items at transients" in Reaper. There's also "Auto trim/split items (remove silence)", where you can determine what should be considered silence (so it doesn't have to be actual silence). Or you can easily write a custom action that does even more for you. No need to do it all manually! And the grouping functionality also keeps your files aligned to each other, which is a blessing when you have to edit recordings done with multiple microphones. Thank you so much for your tutorials!
This is so excellently thorough. Cuts at the perfect spots, great explanations, simple to understand, to the point, bruh. I love it! Great job mate! (subscribed)
David, thanks a million! Fabulous tutorial. It's both understandable and comprehensive without glossing over important details. Love the brutal honesty about the tedium... ;-) Years ago, I worked in a little bush hospital in the outback of Zimbabwe for a couple months. I came home with a number of traditional instruments that I've wanted to do something with for years. This is the answer. Many thanks and best wishes!
I was always wondering how all this orchestra libraries were made and got kind of interested in doing one. This is by far the best explanation of it, thank you!
I Do not comment much, but this was a lovey welt put fun produced short I just adored! I love music in general and music productions, listening between the notes picking out intricate things, but seeing this opened a lot of possibilities to my imagination, I knew of samples. but the possibility to get something clean and can map myself has got me thinking, thank you, Keep up your excellent Work.
Thanks for another informative video. Learning a little more each time I watch your video and the other video around. Lovely community out there, specially in the Decent Sampler space. God bless you and your family abundantly always! 🙂🙏🏼❤️
Thanks for posting this. I use Cubase, but I was able to follow most of what you did and created my first Kontakt instrument. One thing I don't know how to do in Cubase is those quick edits at the beginning of each audio clip. The video has really inspired me to create all kinds of instruments. Thanks again!!
Awesome tutorial! I am a Reaper fanatic and you should definitely check out the "dynamic split" (D Hotkey) and the stretch marker features in Reaper, they are extremely powerful and can be used for so many different things in this aspect!
Thank you so much for making this incredibly thoughtful & comprehensive tutorial! I sampled my piano 5 years ago and have been dreading learning this process, but you've made me excited to take it on!
Hi David .. Just bought into the Kontakt ecosystem, and just want to thank you for these great videos. I have a ton of experience with other samplers (hardware and software) and your videos strike a really good balance of info. Great stuff for those new to sampling and a good pace for people like myself. Subscribed :)
Awesome video! I have started collecting hardware analog synths. These have no ability to save their settings so I've started sampling some of the sounds. Your video allowed me to save those sounds for future projects and playing. Thanks!
Awesome video. This is where I will send my producer friends when they ask why I choose to pay for sample libraries and certain VST’s instead of using cracked versions. Because the time and appreciation that is put into making even just one of the amazing instruments I have access to.
Many many thanks for this tutorial. I've wanted to try making a Kontakt instrument for a very long time now. Finally I think I'm confident that I could do it!
Thank you for this amazing tutorial. Not only did I learn how to make an instrument, but you also showed a few cool tricks in Kontakt and Reaper that I did not know even exist. Now I can't wait to make my own! Subscribing ;)
Oh some advice for the renaming. When you click on the region name to change the name, instead of pressing enter, you can press tab in order to jump to the next one. Its pretty use, and minimizes you jumping from keyboard and mouse. Hope this simple tip helps :D
Excellent job Dave! The tutorial and the instrument are great! If are start doing kontakt instruments watch this video, you going to save a lot of time!
Hey for all who have probs with getting the fadeout on all samples: U need to add relative edge edit on both! Media item fade/crossfade + Media item edge. Hope could help someone
brilliant enjoyed this tremendously. this was both educational and inspiring to watch. Also, I live in the caribbean and have always found the kalimba to be similar in sound to the steelpan. Very beautiful instruments.
This was really helpful. Some great Reaper tips as well. Just a couple of points that might be helpful. re. Reaper. When you say you’re not sure what ‘Move edge ignoring snap’ would mean, I think that means that if ‘Snap’ is enabled, when you move an audio (or even midi) file, it jumps (‘snaps’) to the nearest bar line, depending on which direction you move the item (which you wouldn’t want in this example, as you want to be able to choose how much of an incremental move you make.) Also one thing I discovered - when you try to render regions in Reaper’s ‘Render to File’ menu after you have renamed your regions with the note names, it doesn’t keep the names you’ve given - it starts its own numbering system. You have to either put ‘$region’ where it says ‘Filename’ in the Output section, or choose ‘$region’ from the Wildcards menu, in the ‘Project Information’ dropdown list, in order to keep the region names you created. (You sort of skimmed over that detail and it took me a while to work it out - this might be helpful for others watching this.)
Great vid! I think you can avoid the "tab+s" part with the "dynamic split items" action in Reaper. I'm pretty sure you can get it to only cut at the start of transients, so you also get all the tail you need.
Very well done! I’ve been doing sooo much of this by hand with Audacity...I mean literally for years 🤦🏽♂️ Definitely going to get into Reaper now. Nice work!
Thank you very much! Really helpful video. I'm not using all of the same softwares, but it was still really useful to get a general idea of the process
This is by far the most coherent tutorial on this topic that I've seen so far
Yeah I just found him and all his vids are so clear and tidy
Fantastic tutorial, David. 4 years on, but still totally relevant. Keep up the good work.

Glad it was helpful!
came here looking for Kontakt stuff and got a REAPER tutorial on top of it. This video is *very* solid!
