Winters discussed a time after the war when he was walking down the street and a kid came up and was hitting a wooden fence with a stick and the sound it made caused Winters to dive down onto the ground before he thought about it.

      PTSD is a brutal thing...

This is the episode when Tom Hanks literally takes the reigns in the series...becoming more introspective with Winters. The back and forth between the gunfire and typewriter is done brilliantly. Long before PTSD was even taken seriously. General Patton famously addressed it with the back of his hand on a shell shocked soldiers face while reprimanding him. Oh and if any of you run into any bacon sandwiches, let me know. Currahee ♠

The comment about the SS not having any Polish isn't true. The SS had soldiers from just about every country they occupied. Even Arab volunteers. Many of the last SS defending the Government District in Berlin were actually French. Go figure.

The back and forth between the battle and the gunfire was great!

@krisfrederick5001 sometimes it's just dialogue from a character's point of view, Martin might truly believe there are no Polish men in the SS..

All the men retreating was called "the big bug out", soldiers up front saw the massive force they ran, the soldiers behind them saw their comrades retreating in extreme fear they panicked as well. The soldiers were caught up in mass hysteria some running without ever seeing the enemy.

@@noahzynski I lost track of how many books I've read and movies I watched about the Battle of the Bulge (even one written from the German perspective) this does it justice. Another movie that does a good job is Battleground 1949, keep in mind budget was not as big, special effects not as good and they toned it down a lot (many men who were there suffered PTSD let's not trigger that). I haven't seen a lot of reaction videos on it.

And imagine being a guy in your teens, sent off to war, and you're on guard, by yourself, at night, barely able to see anything, and you barely see that someone is moving toward you. It's easy to see how often this sort of thing happened, similar to how Stonewall Jackson also was killed by his own men.

Cross roads separate here and there. Before the cross roads few have PTSD, after, well... Before, the old men could sleep on cold nights, after they have nightmares of Bastogne. Oh, bit of history; The Germans came through the Arden forrest and surprised the French in 1939. The French did not reinforce Bastogne in then neutral Belgium, instead keepig the Maginot Line well manned. That decision is reason #248 why France fell. The US replaced the decimated troops with whatever was on hand. That was a paratroopers who were under supplied because they were about to go back to Paris to prepare for their next jump.
