  • This was once the site of Saunders-Roe factory which converted US made Catalina flying boats and was staffed by nearly 2000 people in its 1940s heyday.
After the war had ended, it was remained Saunders Shipyard, building the world's first aluminium bodied P1602 Motor Torpedo boat. The company in 1968 then became part of Laird Ltd and spent it's latter years making a range of products from Cuban Bus bodies, air bridges for international airports and the Centaur; a half track vehicle based off the Series 2 Land Rover.
The site was finally closed in 1997, and has remained empty ever since, except for occasional use as storage for various items. Outside it still retains the look it held in the 1940s where it played a role in the war effort.

Thank you, The guy was coming out to me as it’s private property and thought I was scoping the place out, once I told him my dad used to work on the site in its hey day we had a chat and he invited me on to look round, I remember being on site as a child when it was fully functional

@@TMA_Droning That was beneficial for you and very good of the guy to allow you in. I visited recently : although i could not see them there was someone in the "workshop" off to the left when you go in. Before I got that far, a mobile mechanic vehicle emerged and stopped when he reached me and told me not permitted, the buildings are condemned and the CCTV will alert the police to attend if I remained . (I'm not certain how accurate that would be ??...he wasn't rude or nasty, just firm 🙂).

@@Simpleburger1968 ye there is cctv there, and all buildings are condemned as unsafe, they have had a lot of thefts in the past, the guy that spoke to me lives in the house on site and is a pretty decent guy even tho we got off on the wrong foot to start lol, was interesting to speak to him about potential plans and old workers that revisit the place
