Matt, my friend... you're a genius in telling stories about these whiskys. I'm far far far from a whisky aficionado, but listening to you talk about it makes me want to just kick back with you and share a couple glasses. Seriously man, this is great. And wonderful video editing by KD. Keep up the great work.
Josh, I am always appreciative for the support and friendship you give. I can only imagine the dram we'd share when these Canucks finally hoist that silver chalice. Cheers friend 🥃
Great video, as ever! I haven't tried this offering, but the 105 is a reference CS sherry bomb for me and I love it. Randomly, when I lived in the UK, the local Costco sold both the 21 and 25 yr old. I distinctly remember getting the 21 yr old for circa £90, which was a screaming deal! Sadly so much more expensive here in BC
Thanks James! The 105 is a classic, literally as it, more or less, was the first modern cask strength single malt. Gotta respect that. Yeah, the price of the 21 year here makes me wince. We never seem to know how good we have it until the £90 21 Year old is gone 😂 Cheers 🥃
Good job, Matt, and indeed it is a creation for blender's work lovers...and a compromise between bringing some old school casks (I had the chance to try some really old ones over the years) and bringing to the table a still affordable product that at a certain extent showcases the distillery's housestyle wider than in the 15 yo or say the 25 yo... I'm like you loving it but also a bit frustrated (for now, like you I'm still at the begining of the bottle which I also reviewed in video along with other expressions) as I think it could have been even better & more demonstrative fruitiness wise, for instance (& length on the palate I agree too), but it is still a very good more than decently aged whisky. Now, regarding my favorite expressions from the distillery, to answer your question, I speak a bit of them in that video but more on another one which gathers my favorite tastings out of around 4000 ones in 25 years now, btw, it is called "15 Exceptional Whiskies You Should Try before you die & Affordable Alternatives" (if some day you have "an hour to lose"😉). Cheers !
I was impressed even further by this 185th, given my current whisky context at the time. I have been stuck into samples of Family Casks, largely from the 1990's. And yet this still performed admirably. 4000 whiskies 😂 That is an intimidating total! I'm sure I'll have an extra hour to "lose" sometime soon to check out that video. Cheers 🥃
Enjoyed the 185 last year. Great whisky. Family casks are amazing. Great buying a year to mark a birthday or special occasion. I like the 15 from the core range.
Glad you also enjoyed the 185 Henri! I've had a few Family cask samples, and the've all been excellent like you said. I only own one so far, a 1992 29 year old. Can't wait to crack into it. Cheers 🥃
I had GF 105, 12 and 15 from the core range so I passed up on the 185 when I was visited the Banff last year. That sounds like a great dram Matt. Let's go Blue Jays! Cheers!
The 15 year is a stalwart, great whisky from my experience. One of the first I really enjoyed back in the day. Let's have a fun season, maybe even post season? :P Lets. Play. Ball! Cheers 🥃
Oh! if your in the UK hunt out the Gift pack, it will make good sense at present price hikes :) Good luck finding it. I've been lucky with a few of the known sites. The 25yr 50ml sample is a bonus.
You know, you just reminded me that a couple towns away there is one of the GF 15 tasting packs(with a 50 ml 21 year and 25 Year included) that's been sitting on a shelf since 2012. It's $135 CAD (£80). I probably should pick it up for that price eh?
There's always a risk of losing what is good by doing this. By taking their time I'd say they nailed it this time. Then again, he took his time making that "Custom" Cadillac too 😆 Cheers 🥃
No doubt my favorite Glenfarclas is the 15. Thank God I can get it when in BC since it's not sold in the U.S. Just wish their entire age statement range was 46% but not going to complain since their prices are so reasonable on their core range.
Great choice with the 15, that was what opened my eyes to Glenfarclas. That would be a fantastic change, but the prices have been so reasonable on Glenfarclas it's tough to ask more of them. I give them a break. Good luck and God speed against PTFC. We did our part :) Cheers 🥃
The list seemingly is still growing Miles. So far I know that we will be visiting Holyrood, Caol Ila, Ardnahoe, Kilchoman, and Glen Scotia. We have Warehouse Tastings and/or Tours booked at Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Bunnahabhain, Bowmore, Bruichladdich, Springbank, Kilkerran, and Cadenheads. I'm sure it will be an awesome trip but the logistics are getting to be nuts! Cheers 🥃
The 185 is very good, some of the Family cask samples I have tried are off the scale. Have a 22 year 105, but never opened it due to a few meh reviews.
I's agree, some of the Family Casks are unbelievably good. I've had some samples but I am waiting on an excellent excuse to crack into the only FC I own, the KWM 1992 Family Cask. Never tried that 22 Year 105 but I am surprised to hear the reviews were underwhelming. Cheers Peter 🥃
Ooof, I don't know Andrew, that's fairly steep. That's about 35-40% more than I paid. And lookign at what you can get for that price, you could by a bottle of the new Signatory "secret" Macallan 17 year old Cask strength from Royal Mile Whiskies for close to the same £139.95. If it were me, I'd be ordering that Signatory. Cheers 🥃
@@andrewmainprice2179 £104 is a much better price! Glad you were able to shave off an extra £26! I really enjoyed it and now that I'm looking at current prices it looks like It's now starting to go much higher. Well done.
185 never came to Ontario ---- I will vatt my Clas 10y + 15 + 17 + 25 + 40y with enough Clas-105 60% to get to 46%, and pretend it is 185 ! ! (( I skip 12, 21 and 30yo on purpose, too similar to its younget siblings ))
Where are you located Jonathan? I know it's still available at a couple of places in B.C. and Alberta. I saw that you follow J.P. Cormier. I'm from Nova Scotia originally so I'm familiar with his music and a fan of his. I'm guessing this likely means you're out east instead of west like me, which might mean you're out of luck on the bottle hunt. Sorry if that's the case. Cheers 🥃
@@whiskyonthewestcoast I live in Canada. You know of a store I can still acquire one?? Do you know of any stores I can order online in Alberta? Yep, I periodically follow J.p .. cool!

I have this unopened Matt thanks for the review. Also a proud owner of 1990 family cask
Your welcome for the review! Glad you've got a bottle tucked away. And you've got me beat! My only family Cask is a 1992 29 year old. Cheers 🥃

The 185 is on my ever expanding list of must buy. Glenfarclas is a great traditional distillery to visit when you are here.
I'd love to visit it one day. Seems to have a great history and whisky. Cheers 🥃

I'm glad these casks worked well together. I would be afraid of getting a "Johnny Cash Cadillac" effect with marrying so many decades together.
good song ;)
