GX470 TPMS DISABLE DIY

  • Disabling your TPMS is very easy on a Lexus GX470. Some of you might wonder why one would do such a thing. There are actually many reasons to do so. Aging TPMS systems can be annoying and problematic. Especially if you are from the old school. I’m old school so I hate TPMS monitors unless they are the newer ones that actually display each tire pressure reading. Besides that if you drive somewhere with massive changes in elevation, temperature, terrain and or climate TPMS monitors can drive you crazy! This is how you disable the system on a Lexus GX470.

    For anyone watching. You can ground the blue wire to the white and black wire in the same harness. No need for an external ground. Just twist those two together.

    Note! Another poster (WR) mentioned this but thought it might be helpful to repeat it. IF your TPMS box is RED instead of GREEN, instead of grounding the blue wire, simply connect it to the green with red stripe wire right next to it. It worked like a charm. I DID NOT cut either wire. Just carefully strip off some shielding and solder a very short wire to both, OR use a connector, whatever. But the second the blue wire touches the green/red wire…..the TPMS light goes off! Thanks for the video!

    Thanks for video, I just bought the same rims and tires and paid an extra $400 at Firestone for the sensors, the light never went off, they recommendedto contact the dealership, called toyota and they said I need toyota or lexus sensors and they cost $700 with labor, save the headaches and listen to this man right here... Thanks for this video!!!

    • @KRTLyfe
      @KRTLyfe  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wow, that is crazy expensive! IMHO TPMS sensors aren’t worth the headache unless they are the really fancy modern systems then maybe. I get it “most people” probably need them but for us gear heads I think it just gets in the way. Especially if you do any off-roading in the vehicle or switch wheels a lot. Like when I had my 997 I would switch my wheel sets a lot and it was always a headache dealing with the extra variable of TPMS sensors.... and the extra money involved. Unfortunately Porsche didn’t have an option to disable TPMS even tho supposedly a lot of 911 owners track their cars. Smh.

    I don't know if you know this but if it is an 07 and up GX470 you don't ground the blue wire you have to actually supply 5v to the harness side of the blue wire. I got the 5V signal from the Green with red stripe wire that is the second wire from the blue wire. Also you can open up the TPMS box and jumper the wires from inside the unit without cutting any wires. There is a write-up on IH8MUD about doing this.

    I pulled up the wiring diagrams to see what you're achieving with this hack. Looking at the circuits, I found that a solid blue wire gets grounded by the TPMS controller to turn on the light in the cluster, and should leave the light off if the TPMS controller raises the line or leaves it open. That doesn't explain how your hack works. I checked the 2008 diagrams and the 2004 diagrams, they were identical. Looked through the entire electrical schematics for the 2003 GX470 and found no TPMS system at all. It seems they didn't have TPMS the first year.
    Next step is to actually pull apart my 2008 GX470 TPMS and see if it looks like yours or if it matches the schematics. I want a hack that doesn't burn anything out or draw excessive current. Forcibly grounding a terminal that's trying to be set high might not be good. It seems you don't burn anything out by grounding that wire, since the light works when you disconnect your ground. Still, I'd like to know what I'm doing before I do it.

    • @KRTLyfe
      @KRTLyfe  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You might want to check IH8MUD and see if someone has already done the component level circuitry homework.
      Cheers to you for the extra diligence!

    • @charvakkarpe
      @charvakkarpe 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@KRTLyfe Good call! IH8MUD has a post that explains the 07+ has a different TPMS module, red in color instead of green. That's what mine is. And sure enough, according to the post the blue wire is supposed to get hooked up to 5V, which we get by tapping it off the adjacent 5V reference wire. A lot of people recommend jumpering the two wires, but nobody has confirmed that forcing the blue wire to 5V doesn't fry the board. I plan to reverse the fix when I'm due for new tires, at which point I'll just install all 4 new sensors. I have an electrical terminal removal tool, so I'll try popping the blue wire out of the connector so it's properly disconnected. I guess I could cut it too, but reversible fixes are best. :)

    • @charvakkarpe
      @charvakkarpe 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The terminals are really stuck inside that connector, I couldn't get them out. A replacement TPMS computer is $95 used, so I don't want to risk frying mine. I just ordered a set of 4 sensors for $45 and watched videos of how to de-bead the tires using a scissor jack. Sensors are cheap enough that everyone should change them along with the tires to avoid ever having a dead battery. I might put in the extra work of pressing a tire and change my one dead sensor now, install the other three when new tires are due.

    • @KRTLyfe
      @KRTLyfe  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@charvakkarpe don’t forget to order a sensor for your spare tire as well. From my what I remember. I think the spare also communicates with the TPMS system. I really hope those TPMS sensors work for you. I was also looking to go that route until I saw all the mixed reviews for those cheap sensors. You also need to be sure you get the right frequency. You probably already know this stuff but just in case.
      For me I already have a negative bias towards TPMS 😂, combining that with changing wheels and running low tire pressures, changing altitudes and climates. It’s just wasn’t for me. Instead I got this really neat tire pressure gauge/deflator from Harbor Freight and an air compressor. For my usage the money was better spent in this direction.

    • @charvakkarpe
      @charvakkarpe 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@KRTLyfe That makes sense. I wouldn't care if it was just me driving the car. I rent it out on Turo, so it's better to have no warning lights, and even better to have functional warning lights. I've been known to slip a carefully cut piece of foil tape underneath the instrument cluster face to block the check engine light until I got around to an emissions repair. Renters who choose a GX470 are the type who are fine with being told the TPMS batteries are just dead, but as we get into this summer's high prices, the car really should be flawless. Still gotta do the timing belt and I think a ball bearing at the front differential output (already tried the wheel bearing) before I set it to unlimited miles to get these tire treads finished off. Michelin Defenders run forever, there's so much rubber there compared to the weight of the truck.
      The presumably counterfeit TPMS sensors have the right Toyota part number and are used on a variety of cars, including 3 of my 13. I wonder if they're just global market versions, for countries that can't afford our prices. I'll save the old sensors and dig out the batteries for replacement, just in case.

    While this sounds great, people doing it should check the wiring diagram for their particular car and year. For example 4runner could use this mod, rav4, maybe even prius, but rx400h cant. In some cars tpms light is enabled by this module directly grounding it or providing +5v, while in rx400h instance tpms module sends some sort of signal (bean if I am right) to instrument cluster which then turns on or of the tpms light and warning info. So be carefull and double check your wiring.

Quick question the blue wire that you used for the ground where did you get it, do you need a certain gauge wire or type of wire? Also just to be clear you Did Not cut the blue/gray wire you just stripped it back and then wrapped the extra blue ground wire around it correct? Then you wrapped it with the self sealing tape? Thanks for all your help!

    • @KRTLyfe
      @KRTLyfe  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes that is correct. You can use any wire really, it doesn’t really matter. Either way you make the connection it should yield the same results as long as you reconnect all the wires. I hope that clears it up for you.

    So I did this and it turned off the flashing TPMS light, but it turned on the VSC OFF and VSC TRAC light. Now my center diff won't lock either. Button does nothing no flashing light, nothing. Anyone else run in to this problem after doing this fix?

    • @KRTLyfe
      @KRTLyfe  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn’t have those issues nor have I heard of anyone else having that type of issue. It could be possible that you disconnected something else or pushed a button somewhere. These are different systems and shouldn’t affect one another.
