  • Here's a simple but powerful exercise that will help you work on your left and right hand independence on the piano. The idea is to focus on technically simple pieces that are easy to play separately in each hand, but really challenge your independence when you bring them together!
    Another exercise for hand independence:

    To everyone attempting this exercise: Don't try to hear both parts independently at first. Practice very slowly and look at the notes, and simply treat it as two melodies. You will find that with time, and as you (gradually!) speed up, they will start making sense and your brain will come to realize "hey I'm playing the same thing in my left hand as in my right hand!". Once you reach that stage, it's time to slightly change the challenge (e.g. change the delay from 1 bar to 2 bars or 2 beats, or pick another song).

      AZMUZICK I started out on guitar but was at home with the family piano.. took lessons too..I would say that you have put extra stress and expectations on yourself..remember the piano is an alien instrument at first .take baby steps..use what you learned on guitar and apply it as often as possible. Of course changing keys of guitar is extremely easy just change fret number. I was working on a Brent Mason solos and could not get up the speed.. tried all day long..my brain was telling me..that's to hard..woke up the next morning .. played it like I had played it all my life..occasionally revisit this .. put it under watch later if nothing else.. your brain will figure it out.. on piano I've gone to sleep wake up the next morning and problem solved. I've taken a walk, answered the phone.. came back and played the part that gave me trouble. If you can afford it find good teacher.. but be clear that you want to learn jazz,. All classical teachers as you probably know do not know how to improvise.. sorry to write a book but we both have spent some time with the six string.

    That feel when you're playing something in one hand, then as soon as you play with the other hand, both hand immediately either stop or start doing the same thing.
    I'm sitting here typing different keys in different areas of a keyboard at high speeds with no issues, yet a piano is this God-awfully difficult thing for my hands. (I guess this is the perfect example of what practice leads to since my hands didn't work with a keyboard well when I started typing either).

    • @Shadowsphere1
      @Shadowsphere1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +76

      But I was kinda' hoping my brain would have been able to translate typing independence to the piano because my hands aren't too different in positioning.

    If you want Superior hand independence learn a lot a Bach first. ( along wight your normal materials of course) even if you need to start with easier additions because your just starting, then move to harder music. "Hannon revisited" is excellent as well in all keys. A updated version of the original Hannon that puts more focus on the left hand.
    Also for you beginners, stay away from easy piano books (Terrible idea) meaning simple chord left hand melody right hand. yes its important to learn chords but you need to start with music that immediately challenges the left hand from the beginning. Also get a teacher. Videos and and books are nice but nothing replaces a good teacher who can push you more than you will your self.
    Bach's music duplicates what is being played in the right hand with the left. After being able to play all of Bach's two and three part inventions and Etudes your skill level will be far beyond what you thought you could do before and is a lot more fun that playing exercises. Every single great piano player that has ever been known has had a very close relationship with Bach and trust me its for a reason. ;) Also let me make a oblivious point, lean how to play music where the left hand is challenging. That's it. No real secret here. The left hand in a lot of music is a lot simpler and therefore does not get the same attention that the right does so play music where is does. Beethoven, Chopin pretty much all the classical greats. Oscar Peterson, Art Tatum for the more advanced players. Go play ONE of of Art Tatum transcribed pieces and master it and you will walk away with so much i cant even put into words. Challenge yourself that's the secret. If you try to learn a piece of music and the left hand seems impossible stick with it and don't give up. once your done you will walk away with new found skills. If a left hand part is so hard that you cant put it together right away then slow it down or even learn the left by itself, then right, then together. Break it down and learn measure by measure. Another tip is to practice every song you learn faster than it asks you too. By doing this when you play it at the correct tempo you will be most confident in your playing and will have energy too spare. if you do that you can learn to play anything. Happy practicing :)

      @Miguel-ke5cq 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Reuben James i also noticed one needs to have a pretty strong left hand. i try to make the left hand as difficult as i can so i train myself the propper way.
      i am no pro, i am not that good at reading music, but i certainly dont have a crappy ear, and this is how im able to figure out songs on the piano. The problem really comes down to hand independence, is the key to this istrument, there is no other way around. i think every instrument has its particularly challenging aspect, with guitar it might be how fluent one is able to become when picking (alternate picking at high leves is actually quite challenging for most people), with piano, the brainsplitting thing is the challenging aspect. try to play some rock song on piano, when you come to the solo part you might be able to perform the leads no problem, but when you ad the rythmic section (left hand) it can become really, really hard. i tried to play the pot-tool on piano. left hand by its self=no problem, right hand=no problem. together=mindfuck.
      im still trying to solve the problem of my coordination. i think i might go lefthanded in my day to day life in order to develop some degree of ambidexterity to see how that helps

    • @reubenjames3651
      @reubenjames3651 7 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      Really in piano your left hand will always be lacking. the left hand is the bass\ rythem section. almost all music in the piano world is dominated by the right hand. One reason why bach is stressed. Bach is the mother of hand seperation and also just playing alot. I mean alot. When i was kid I practiced for least two or three hours a day on average. The guys you can see that just lay down fat stuff and make it look so easy have put thousands of hours into there craft. There really is no easy method as many online lesson and books claim. Hard work, very hard work gets you to effortless playing and even then you still need daily or weekly rehearsal to maintain. I still run through Bach and other classical music help keep my hands in good shape. Chopin, Bethoven both had demanding left hands along with many others. keep playing and you'll get there, Along with practicing songs and such, always be working on a very challenging piece. something way above your level and work it measure by measure until its finished. you will walk away with a higher level of skill each time you do this. Something that takes 2 to three months to get nailed down is the ideal time or hardness level for such a task and something you love you will keep you working on it. if you don't love it chances are you won't stick to it, good luck.

    Just you said, man. It is simple, but incredibly powerful. I felt like a dunce when I first started, but the struggle was/is totally worth it. It brought on a new confidence when I was able to get through it completely a couple times.

      IceCreeper28 learn a simple song that uses both hands like the beginning of All Of Me-John Legend. Repeat repeat then eventually youll be used to playing two hands. Doesnt mean it will always be easy tho

    • @brandonknable7890
      @brandonknable7890 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      IceCreeper28 when you learn a song, you are also learning when to use your left hand and when to use your right and even both, etc. Play slowly. Slow slow slow. Try mastering a left hand part of a simple song then try the right hand, treat them as both separate parts. Then try to play both hands slowly over and over until you can do the whole song. Its constant practice but don't get frustrated. Its part of the process

I've been there and can suggest some solutions most people have been there too. and yes I've been there I'd say I do calculus for a hobby why can't I do this. I play well but was real Bab other sheet music. I took piano lessons from conservatory grads ECT.. from age 14.to around1 18 . I was a lousy note reader. I took lessons from a Bach specialist for about a year it took me ten weeks to get through Sol feggiatto .. the problem was reading it some one who is skilled at notereader could do it in a week easily.. so don't feel bad.. any problems my virtual door is available for sincere learners.

      Majed Kalaoun Majed Kalaoun it sounds like you’re a better piano player than me! i’ve learned a couple of really hard pieces (mostly so if someone makes me play for them i’ve got more impressive stuff than g3 mozart rondos or whatever), but my skill level is still quite low. i have found, though, that learning a handful of low-level (though still somewhat challenging) pieces has improved my ability much more than learning really hard stuff. i spent a year getting all of the rachmaninoff transcription of the bach violin partita #3 down, and at the end of it i was only really better (in terms of how it felt when improvising or learning new stuff) by the same increment as by a couple of months with grade 3 or 4 pieces, like reinecke sonatinas (which i really like!), and playing them without looking at the keyboard. i think doing this is makes you better more quickly, which isn’t to say learning hard stuff is bad, just that it can slow you down in absolute terms. in any case, i wish you the best of luck on your musical journey. hope you got that liszt down!

    from my experience, the trick is to gain mastery of each hand's part one at a time. muscle memory is essential to mending that awkward feeling your brain has when it's trying to multitask. be able to play 1 hand with your eyes closed, then the other.

    I really love piano and want to learn, but it's just no use for me. My brain just crashes and I don't think piano will be my thing even though Im in love with learning how to play. I guess I'll move to another instrument.

      Nickboyyy Gaming I don't have a piano and I haven't tried this exercise yet, but this looks really hard and after watching this video I thought of the same thing about changing to another instrument, BUT whats the point on giving up, I mean you and I know that learning piano ain't easy but just imagine yourself in the future KNOWING how to play the piano, wouldn't you be proud of yourself? If piano was easy to play then anybody could play it and it wouldn't be that special... Anyways I hope that you still want to play the piano

      If you are in love with it, you MUST continue on. You do not have to impress anyone, but try to ENJOY the challenge - and look, we have such a wonderful teacher - he is not making these videos to sell anything - consider that!
      Also, I play three other instruments and I wish I had started with piano so I would have had a good concept of what makes music - the chords and inversions and going from one key to another - the more you get involved with piano, your love will only grow. Bless you - you have wonderful exciting life ahead of you!

      Nickboyyy Gaming Nobody emphasized enough how much time this takes. Don't be dissapointed if you can't do this etihin thr first 5 hours of practice. Of course this should only come after getting other basic stuff down like actually knowing your notes.

      You better change your instrument, if you are gonna have that setting, piano isn't for you.
