Interesting story: My great great uncle was part if this invasion He was drafted into the IJA at the age of 16 from his korean schoolhouse (hes not korean, my great grandparents moved from japan to japanese occupied korea) along with 300 other of his class mates. They gave him a uniform, a rifle, basic training and then was sent off to fight the British as the invasion force of malaya. This battle completely changed him. Mentally and physically. After the battle, all 300 of his classmates died. Except for 3. He was one of them. It was a stroke of luck. I thank him and his fallen schoolmates that fought and died beside my uncle, but i also thank the British soldiers for fighting for their king and country. He then died in the 1980s or 1990s I can’t remember, but he was a cheerful person despite the fact that he lost some childhood friends.
My Malaysian friend's grandfather was an independence activist. It's just a drink talking story, so it's not credible, I was told that he died for independence in Malaysia after WW2. He joined the Independence movement after he saw the Asian Japanese army bravely fighting the British. Perhaps he have seen your great great uncle. all the things that our ancestors fought bravely for their believe are contributing to the current peacetoday and should not be forgotten. Love UK & Japan & Malaysia from Indonesia
My grandmother told me that she ever saw the japanese soldier take out the baby from a pregent woman's body with the knife, i can't believe some people still be proud of imperialism

Absolutely amazing video! In my country we only study ww2 at the eastern front (ussr vs germany) and rarely far eastern battles (mostly ussr vs japan). Yet again, I'm Thai. As a Kings and Generals fan I'm impress with the information on Thailand history, rarely seen through the western viewpoint. Every Thai students grows up knows this story, we was neither with the Axis nor the allies lol. The battle between us and the Japanese took place for several hours then stop. Let them passed. Thai history always regarded the Japanese as allies since the ancient time. The famous place for WW2 and Japanese in Thailand is in the river Kwai, for many British POWs were send and died there.
Of course Thailand was allied with the Axis. On January 25, 1942, the Thai government sent a declaration of war to the USA and Great Britain, but the USA never received it because the Thai ambassador Seni Pramot refused to deliver it to the US government.
So love your content. This is hitting home. My grandmother told horrific stories of the Japanese. She was born in Sarawak. Due to confusion, some Sikh regiment were still fighting after the British surrendered. Once they were all dead, her sister and her joined her father to do the last rights for the 30 or so young adult soldiers. She was only around 10 years old. Later the irony being that her family were there to stay in Dayak / Iban Territory to protect the British from them. The Sikhs were supposed to watch over them. During the war, these head hunters stood by the Sikh families. Japanese were terrified of the head hunters and did not want to go into the jungles anyway.
Iban here. Did your grandmother say they were terrified of us? I asked my elders about this and they said the Japanese just didn't deem us enough of a threat to care
@@Masterclass20 She mentioned that the Japanese were more interested in towns and cities. But those that the Iban / Dayaks gave refuge too were safe. The only city she said that Japanese did not touch was a place called Bau and it was because of the Iban / Dayaks there.
The Thai government collaborated with Imperial Japan during WW2. They helped during the invasion of Malaya, they helped with the logistics of foods and other equipments, and also they helped the transportation of PoWs and civillians to the Death Railway construction. And yet Thailand received little retribution after the war.
The government of Thailand during the start of Pacific War and at the end were different. So, no retribution as the new government aligned with the Allies...
Thai collaborated with Japanese But Thai and USA were not war each other hahahh because Thai Ambassador to Washington Seni Prapoj didn't send declaration war to US government after Seni established Free Thai in Usa. Thank for telling about this.!
It's important to remember the context in which this happened. European colonial powers had been a bother, for quite some time. From at least The 17th Century, when The French were kicked out of Siam, but more recently when France took large areas of Siamese territory and claimed it for Indochine, and then ransomed Bangkok and bankrupted the Royal emergency fund known as "The Red Bag Money", and Britain took the southernmost part of Siam and made it part of Malaysia along with The Shan State and making it part of Burma-an area where even today there are still people who speak Thai and don't speak Burmese. In Burma Aung San actually invited The Japanese to help them get get rid of The British. However, it was soon apparent to everyone that living under Imperial Japanese control was even worse, and resistence fighters rose up in each country against them, like Aung San and The Karen People in Burma, and Ho Chi Minh in Indochina. The Seri Thai, or "Free Thai" that others have mentioned in this thread worked with The American Forces to undermine Japanese operations. Pridi Phanomyong was key in organising The Seri Thai, and along side Plaek Phibunsongkhram had been one of the architects of The People's Revolution and drafted the initial constitutions. However, Phibunsongkhram and Pridi diverged politically since their time as students together in Europe, and Pridi, being more democratic, was exiled while Phibunsongkhram fashioned himself as dictator. The Japanese had promised to return lands to Thailand that had been taken by France and England, in return for hosting their presence. This led to Thailand being bombed by The Allies (a UXB from World War II actually killed a few people about 8 years ago when it was unearthed in Bangkok). Following the war The U.S., in recognition for the work of The Seri Thai and Pridi Phanomyong, instructed France and The UK not to make Thailand pay retribution, and in return Thailand did not request the return of lands that Japan had promised to give them. This actually erupted in a near war with Cambodia nearly 10 years ago when The World Court intervened and granted Cambodia dominion over a still-disputed area. While that's been officially settled, there are still people not happy about it. After World War II The U.S. began using Thailand as an important military base. Now there's bloody Starbucks, Kentucky Fried Chicken, McDonald's, etc. everywhere, so I'd say that's harsh retribution enough.
There is this one quote that I never forget from my primary & secondary school education is the one from the general yamashita tomoyuki is "My attack on Singapore was big bluff, a big bluff that worked. my men were tired, we lacked resources and support, if the fighting continued, we would have lost."
Japan were Iron-clad in the first 6 months of the war, nothing was stopping them. Then they realised they had to hold all these island territories, and things got a bit... bad for them
Hold up hold up. "Today we will learn about the horrifying atrocities committed by the Japanese war machine in the Pacific. But first! Please purchase these cute Japanese snacks :3"
I thought this would be a weekly thing but I did not expect a release after 2 days. Amazing series! Props to the whole team for shedding light on the smaller yet significant details in the Pacific Theatre of WWII.
I've been to Singapore and Malaya twice and I have visited Fort Siloso and Canning. Standing there in the centre of the forts I could only imagine what it must have been like fighting in that jungle heat against a particularly savage enemy like the Japanese. I was humbled by it and what they had done for King and Empire. My wife has even visited the Death Railway built by the British and Empire POWs and she was just as moved as I was. Thanks for the video. Truly informative. I also took one of the routes by bus going towards Malaya that the Japanese Imperial Army had taken.
They will also cover the dutch side, and how in the end, in the defense of indonesia, the british, dutch and americans joined forces into just one command. The Japanese were unstoppable.
What I mean is that usually whenever someone does a pacific war, it is just the American and Japanese in the Pacific Ocean, hence the Pacific War. I understand the British and Dutch controlled most of Southeast Asia, but they tend to skip over that.
@@yourcasualservantofsauron9781 Yeah, probably those were made by Americans, like the HBO series the pacific. @@superspies32 Im not surprised when Britain is going toe to toe with Germany and Italy and Japan sneaks up from behind and punches him in the back of the head ...slimy little f*ckers .. one on one Britain would have battered Japan
@@lightfootpathfinder8218 one on one britain definitely would not have battered japan. the economic disparity between japan and britain was nowhere near that between them and the us. not to mention that while the japanese navy was a little smaller than britain's, in terms of Pacific power projection it was far stronger, as Britain had to divide its fleets between continents, an issue Japan wouldn't have. not to mention the japanese army, at least early in the war, was large, well-equipped, battle-hardened and adequately trained, making it among the finest armies in the world, whereas britain was sorely lacking in that regard. One-on-one, without American support, Japan would've run through British Malaya and Burma, and perhaps made it to Bengal, but I doubt they'd be able to do something nutty like conquer British India, but there's basically 0 chance for Great Britain to win that war. Inferior navy, inferior air arm, inferior army, and unlike the US, its industrial might wasnt enough to win the war through sheer resources like the US could. The situation in British India was tenuous enough as it was, fighting Japan without US backing would just tear it apart.
@@diddlypoop your wrong on a lot of things.. Japan only had success in asia-pacific region in 41/42 because of the war in Europe. If Britain wasn't fighting in Europe and Africa the full weight of their armed forces could be deployed to the far East. The best divisions in the British army that were fully motorised as well as large armoured formations would have been used in the Asian theatre of war devastating the Japanese armies(the British Matilda ii tanks armour was impenetrable to all Japanese Anti tank guns only the German 88mm AA gun could pierce it). The RAF could also deploy large numbers of modern aircraft like the spitfire and hurricane to the far East(the spitfire proved superior to the Japanese zero over Ceylon) as well as large bomber formations.and finally the Royal navy could send almost its entire fleet (which was the largest in the world in 1941/42) to the region and it had equal or more of every ship than the Japanese navy. Japan might have been a powerful country in terms of Asia but it was no match for a powerful global European nation like Britain .. or Germany the Soviet Union or France for that matter either(Britain was superior economically to Japan also as the main reason Japan went to war was because of lack of resources ...the same resources Britain already had as it ruled 1/4 of the world's surface!).just look at how badly the Japanese army performed against the Soviets in 1939 ! And this was the same Soviet army that little Finland held off lol. The only reason they had success in 1941/42 was because of the poor quality of the forces deployed against them. One on one against a European armed forces like Britains and Japan would lose !
I am glad my grandfather managed to retire young to become a farmer back in his hometown in Negeri Sembilan. He used to be in British Armies in Kuala Lumpur during pre-WW2.. He managed to escape war and survive with my grandma due to the farm he had

Great documentary in this already great series. As a Malaysian, more Malaysians should watch this to better understand our history. Instead of just the half page summary in our history textbooks. And like someone else said here, the load of Islamic/Middle East history which has little to do with actual Malaysian history.

@@finnforce101 Same. Though I would hold my breath for now since it's likely they will go for Scandinavia DLC first, then the Italy Rework DLC.
Then Country Packs, I guess.
Also, it would be nice if we had a DLC with a rework of the air force system, wich is a bit outdated and cant make you feel planning campaigns like this video. However I think they wont implement new mechanics, only country packs
@@caiomansourcastilho4614 I think air rework will be on Italy DLC.
The graphical presentation in this episode was absolutely amazing. Congrats on the job well done!
Yamashita really was one of the best commanders of the war.
I am glad you cover thai point of view in this conflict because we dont learn about it with this level of detail such as this in our school. Kudos to k&g team and the malaysian animators who work this video.
This series is a absolute goldmine. I'm more than thrilled to watch this. Great work guys. 🤩🤩🤩
Interesting story:
My great great uncle was part if this invasion
He was drafted into the IJA at the age of 16 from his korean schoolhouse (hes not korean, my great grandparents moved from japan to japanese occupied korea) along with 300 other of his class mates.
He then died in the 1980s or 1990s
I can’t remember, but he was a cheerful person despite the fact that he lost some childhood friends.
@@irachowdhury4847 my dad told me, this story will be passed down in my family till time stops
Thank you Kings and Generals for covering the War in the Far East, living here in Singapore I get to know even more details about the Invasion of British Malaya and British Singapore during WW2 with your extraordinary animation covering so much details more than history books.
As a Singaporean fan, thank you so much for this video it means so much to see our history finally being explored in depth by a channel :D I remember trying to look for videos on this topic when I was learning it in secondary school and being disappointed when there were no in depth covers on Southeast Asia and Singapore as most were on the European theatre of the war so thank you so much for this :)))
at 11.45 pm, Japanese ships were already in the waters of Kelantan, the British Defense Forces at Cahaya bulan Beach and Badang had seen a group of their ships, Then between 12: 45-1: 15 am there was a massive landing on Sabak beach and Intense fighting with the first wave of the Japanese Infantry Force (IJA), It is said that the first Japanese force landed 70% of its members were killed including its Veteran officers Major Wadar and Lieutenant Nakamura at Pak Amat Beach simultaneously with British artillery fire began from Cahaya bulan Beach, at 2:15 am the British ordered Lockheed Hudson RAAF bombers to launch air strikes
Absolutely amazing video! In my country we only study ww2 at the eastern front (ussr vs germany) and rarely far eastern battles (mostly ussr vs japan). In media it's the same - either ussr vs germany or Normandy landings. Its really nice to see different perspective and other battles. If you guys gonna make similar videos about start of ww2 in europe (Poland and Nederlands/Belgium/France campaings) and North Africa it would be great!
Tgf
As always, excellent content from K&G. I'm beyond stoked knowing I have FOUR YEARS of this to look forward to. Right now, of all the many history related channels I'm subscribed to, this is the weekly episode I most look forward to. Please keep em coming.

LOL I like the fact that you have a Japanese company to sponsor a video about Japanese WW2 aggression.
Aggressions? What British doing in Asia?
It was typical war between colonial powers
@@tugful Try telling all the native people raped and murdered by the Japanese in this invasion that they weren't being "Aggressive"
There is a time and place for the "anti-colonial" stance, but this isn't one of them. Japan WAS very aggressive to their core during the start of this war. Stop trying to deflect it with "whataboutisms"
@@tugful Britian by that point was literally chilling pretty much. The idea that this war was anything other than naked Japanese imperialism is absurd and before you say the British were an imperial power, yeah they were but 2 wrongs don't make a right

Hopefully your able to cover invasion & fall of Singapore that includes the battle of Bukit Chandu which was quite a significant history that we had "Adnan Bin Saidi" as a hero along with the Malay regiment in our history book.
THIS. Hopefully they cover this battle in the next video.
The Battle of Singapore...
This will be a four-year long project for them. They will certainly come back in another video in the near future to continue the story. It's just that the Philippines were invaded on the same day, so they're going to cover that next. We'll probably bounce back and forth between the fronts as the videos go on.
Yeah Leftenan Adnan, a last stand against a battalion of japanese army that rarely heard and get a spotlight by the world, but in Malaysia n Singapore, hes a hero
@@mrmochi2133 Leftenan Adnan was indeed the Hero of Malaysia & Singapore. Because at the time, Malaysia and Singapore are not separated country as today.
Siam is and always a traitor for South East Asia!!
@@wanto4279 If the rest of South East Asia are independent they would choose the same decision
@@Arthur312HA Say this to your Commie China overlords, and you'll be happy of it.
Of course Thailand was allied with the Axis. On January 25, 1942, the Thai government sent a declaration of war to the USA and Great Britain, but the USA never received it because the Thai ambassador Seni Pramot refused to deliver it to the US government.
@@thenewmisterwehrmacht893 What does this need to do with Communist China? We are on WW2 topic mate
Love the irony of "before we get into these Japanese war crimes, this video is sponsored by Japanese candy box"
Wow, Christmas really comes early!
What an unexpected video! Malaysian will appreciate this work! Thank you so much!
This is definitely one of the best videos on this channel.
They were basically forced to.
@302_11_Pattharapong Boonkerd playing both sides isn't a character you should be proud of. You will have less friends.
As a Malaysian myself.. tq for the video..

Please make a video on Burma campaign. My Grandfather fought valiantly in Burma. He also received Burma star from British Indian Army.
Japan were Iron-clad in the first 6 months of the war, nothing was stopping them. Then they realised they had to hold all these island territories, and things got a bit... bad for them

your animation team is doing a great work!
Never have I ever heard Alor Setar pronounced like anything else other than 'Loqstaq' lol. Thanks for the Malayan coverage, K&G.

As a Singaporean, we're well familiar with this history, having studied in our secondary school, but K&G videos are always welcomed 🤘🏼😁
Good. They are covering the British side and not just the American side. I am excited to see where this goes!
They will also cover the dutch side, and how in the end, in the defense of indonesia, the british, dutch and americans joined forces into just one command. The Japanese were unstoppable.
Most of South Asia is under British colonist what do you expect.
What I mean is that usually whenever someone does a pacific war, it is just the American and Japanese in the Pacific Ocean, hence the Pacific War. I understand the British and Dutch controlled most of Southeast Asia, but they tend to skip over that.
@@mitjed Yeah, the Japanese blitzkrieg across Asia seemed like it would not end. Just like in Europe, the defending forces were overrun.
@@yourcasualservantofsauron9781 Yeah, probably those were made by Americans, like the HBO series the pacific. The entire force who fought the Japanese and won the war where a combined force of the allies (Republic of China, British Empire, British Raj, Netherlands, CCP, US, Malays, Mexico, Thais, Filipinos, Viet Minh). The Japanese combatants where not really just from Japan, they were a combined force of Korean, Manchukuo and Japanese. Its like East Asians vs the world.

Why should it be? We must learn from history but not be trapped by it. Then humanity will progress and not regress. Isn’t that true?
