  • "George" (not his real name) from the Netherlands and his friend were forced to flee Koh Tao after a nasty incident that started outside a beach bar on Sairee Beach. They both say that they fairly certain that the bar in question was the "Sun Dance Bar."
At the time "George" was 28 years of age and nearly 1.9m tall (6 feet 2 inches). He is fairly sure that the attack occurred on or about the morning of 26 May 2013.
(NB. the first few moments of the interview were not recorded)
Other survival stories from Carla Bartel of Manitoba, Canada
    and
and Sam Venning (originally from Somerset, England and now in San Francisco, California, USA) were published on this channel within a few weeks of the publication of "George's" interview.

I lived in Thailand 14 years, worked at Bans fishbowl for a year, I know Santi only too well, he started out friendly to me then later tried to provoke me but he never got violent but he attacked a friend and knocked out his tooth. Unprovoked attack. He likes to punch farang. I don't remember a "sun dance bar." .... most of the folks on the island are very peaceful and kind,.. it is or was a hangout for Surat Thani mafia hitmen and enforcers protected by very powerful and crazy "politician" and mafia boss named Suthep T.

Lived in Thailand for 20 yrs ! Been to Koh Tao and never again. Never felt safe and as I speak fluent Thai I over heard things that scared the shit out of me and me and my wife left the next day on the first boat, it was a long night waiting for the morning to come ! For every murder you hear abt there is 4x more you don't ever hear abt unless family's of missing backpackers kick up a stink, otherwise the Thai media won't ever say anything. Tourism is essential to Thailand. Stay Away from Koh Tao People it's not called Death island for nothing. 2 poor Burmese guys are rotting in a Koh Samui jail after being Framed for Murders they had nothing to do with.

Great comment Sir! It can be enlightening to be able to speak the language and therefore innocently “eavesdrop” on dangerous people plotting violent actions. Even though I have highlighted over 30 deaths on Koh Tao, I always feel that I am merely scratching the surface as further deaths are brought to my attention.

George did the right thing imo. I have been to Thailand many times and that 'something not right' alarm bells need to be acted on fast. Have had some incidents both with falang and Thai, staff and punters. Be polite, get the check bin quick and leave. Things can escalate quickly. Always other places you can go.

Thanks for your comment there Dead Farang. 👍👍✅✅. You have a great channel by the way! I recommend your channel to anyone who wants to view travel videos that are light hearted and entertaining. I recall seeing your attempts to hire a small motorbike on Koh Tao without surrendering your passport as security. You had no luck so eventually handed over your passport. However, you had the good sense to film the motorbike with its existing damage before you took it away thereby avoiding the scam of being charged for pre-existing damage. Well done 👍 and good lesson for new travellers. (NB. The Australian Embassy maintains that one’s Australian passport is property of the Australian government and is not the property of the passport holder to be used as security.)

I don’t have any statistics but it seems that an awful lot of tourists who are victims of violent crime on Koh Tao regard a report to police as being futile. Indeed, there is a tendency for police to disregard reports or, even worse, accuse the victim of making a false report and threatening the victim. This was highlighted a few years ago when a 19 yo London girl reported that she had been drugged, robbed and sodomised on Koh Tao.

An important detail that maybe you don’t know is that after Hanna and David nightmare the Koh Tao police started targeting tourists coming out from the Rasta bar arresting them for few joints or for minor issues but they never went where the Thais use to sell naturally. This to ask bribes and steal further money to tourists. It was clear they were persecuting farangs for revenge. I was one of them. I well know Samui court and even the jail (they bring me there by mistake the day of the trial😂I had to pay 2000 euros for 2 gr of weed (the most expensive of my life) they took my passport and put me 3 hr in a monkey cage at the Koh Tao police station (such a bad memory to see it again in your videos😞) I was in the same cage with a guy from Burma, I will never forget the fear in his eyes. He gave me water and sigarettes and when I finally came out I’ve bring I’m back food, water and more from 7/11. It was the worst experience of my life. I’m not proud of this. And it’s not easy talking about it. But I hope this helps somebody to think about it😉🙏

Im always thinking about the relatives of the victims. I was shocked when I heard also Berndt died and I’m quite sure things went probably as you and Susan are stating. I’m also sure this will let understand (a few..not everybody) to better understand the culture and be aware. I want to underline I’m not a drug addict or a criminal, I’ve never had problems with the law, I only prefer smoking because I never drink alcool… I love and miss the real true Thailand of 20 plus years ago when there was no greed, less anger and a welcoming culture. Unfortunately they manage to erase the beautiful Oriental true culture of the ancient past times. Same as in my beautiful island unfortunately.

I was told a few times that Koh Tao is only for a day trip snorkelling and never take a pretty woman there because if the headmans son likes her, you might end up in th sea and the police wont do anything.A year or so later, Hannah and David were murdered the day before I flew back to the UK. By the time I got home, the news was everywhere. Like hell would I go there.
Go to Phagnan or Samui, they're bigger islands by far so the chance you will be attacked are far less. Samui is for people who want starbucks and mcdonalds to go with their holiday and Phagnan is for people who generally want to relax and stay away from that. Its less hectic on Phagnan

Great work you are doing there mate 👍👍 thank you
I lived in Thailand for a couple of years around a decade ago. I've just come back from a holiday there, where I got my drink spiked BY BAR STAFF in Bangkok. Thankfully I didn't lose too much.
When I was in Koh Tao in 2013 they pulled a dead guy out of the pool after an all-night Songkran celebration at my resort. I also had an incident of my own where a knife was held to my neck by one of the local Thais.
As a whole Thailand is getting worse for foreigners and I don't see the trend reversing any time soon.
Of course most Thais are decent people but there is a sizeable contingent who live to get one over on Farangs. (Farang = such a loaded word. More than most care to admit, let's be honest).
Then there's the new tax recently slapped on expats and retirees. At this point is the contempt from Thai society not palpable? To be fair, some of it must come from the unfair dynamics set up by our global financial system. However, who wants to go where they don't feel welcome?
Time to start giving other, more deserving places a chance.

They find us brash, drunk, rude, barely clothed, loud etc etc...and unfortunately some of them are then attacking randoms who haven't really done anything. Same as in Lao. Showing western society’s compassion for a dogs well being or lack of? Hmm. Many years back, in southern Thailand a British neighbor came home to be told by their neighbors gardener that the beloved family pet had walked in front of an auto and been killed. Upon inquiry, they'd been told basically the pet died instantly, yet upon further inquiry (hoping to see the dog, b/c you always if possible need independent verification) & also to claim her remains for the childrens sake, etc. They were surprised when asked if it was alright to make good use of the meat.
Most of we Farang, of various nationalities, had lived in parts of South Asia for extended postings. It was the manner in the communication (mother hadn't yet calmed the kids or lead them away from the bearer of bad news). Once more- tremendous cultural night & day. Although different South Asian, N Asian & SE Asian parts hadn't yet outlawed dog meat in those years, the culture clash could've easily lead to more than heartbroken children if their father had reacted differently. In fact much of discussions afterwards involved the dexterity with which banana knives & machete’s double as tools of the trade & lethal weapons, whereas Farang father arrived in only business attire unarmed & unprepared for disagreement or insult. The islands incl. Koh Tao have always always carried a reputation, well before these more recent tourist developments popularity. Be careful- they’re wild & wooly worlds- not only Koh Tao!

Many are unaware. Many just want views at any cost especially if it is some of their viewers who might bear that cost! In many other areas of life and commerce, people are obliged to include WARNINGS ⚠️ and disclaimers but it seems the travel industry can be quite gleefully reckless.

I think that’s good advice although I have an anecdote about a situation where I successfully de-escalated a confrontation between two angry Thai taxi 🚖 🚕 drivers who had a minor collision. They had both been speeding, driving dangerously and cutting each other off before one taxi grazed the other causing minor damage to both vehicles including busting some mirrors. I was an unimpressed passenger in one of the taxis. I simply got out of the passenger’s seat with a pen and paper and started writing down the number plates as I had plenty of practice writing and reading characters in the Thai alphabet. When they saw what I was doing, one exclaimed “falang” whereupon the heated argument immediately ceased, they both scurried back into their taxis and the whole incident was over - save for the damage.

Some Thais on Koh Tao are simply nasty, violent people who need little or no provocation before viciously attacking a tourist. George mentions that the Thai guy kicked a dog just before the Thai guy turned his aggression towards George.

@@KOHTAOMURDERSDEATHISLAND Really? To me the explanation what provoked the attack is rather vague. Thais, generally very calm and nice people, don't just go after you for no reason. It would be interesting to hear the other side of the story. Anyone who has ever been to Southeast Asia knows how European tourists can behave there with too much alcohol and drugs. At the very least, you should take extra care when doing so in an environment of potentially jealous, full with resentment and violent contemporaries. Take care all

@@terencehill3972 I agree that Thais are generally very calm and nice people. However, on islands such as Koh Tao many of the Thais are descended from pirates and smugglers. Australians are not. There has been French-Canadians that were forced into exile by the Brits in 1837-1838. It was that or death. So they went. They were mostly farmers. They had to leave their land, wife, children behind. Some managed years later to come back with great difficulty, just think of the travel between these two places for one thing. It is way too easy to call Australians all descendants of pirates. You ought to be ashamed of yourself.

I feel the island has it's own problems with the dubious Burmese population who may have grouses to wreck and disrepute the island and more for being underlings of the Thai employers there. How the Thai deal with law and order balancing cheap labor and keeping tourism affordable is perhaps as such. So it probably do come with a price to learn Asian manners. How and the manner interviewee asked about the dog yelping may trigger some cultural sensitivity too. Do not treat Asians there like servants and don't assume Western superiority is my take. Seems to me the island is trying to establish a new Thai superiority tourism standards.
