  • I give a step by step fly tying tutorial on my Trout Nugget. This is an articulated zonker pattern with a hidden cone head perfect for chasing trout and bass with floating lines.

    This fly and your cat nip one are just art. I really like the designs and made a lot of variations of them for pike . you are the man. Thumbs up

    Great video, as usual. I am definitely tying a few of these. That hidden cone idea is absolute genius

      Thanks Tim! The Hidden Cone head was all Oskar Hagelin. He has a bunch of cool patterns, and he's a great guy as well!

    Hey Gunnar, I finally got some fibers to tie these with. It looks so simple when I watch it, but I have had to tie several to get the correct proportions. I am used to tying small dry flies. I got the hooks in the sizes you suggested and they look monstrous! I am going to give them another go in the morning. I love your creativity. I am not so creative so I copy. Can't have everything I guess. All the best, Sean

      That’s part of the joy of fly tying for me.

    Great tie, Gunnar...I reckon that would be a great pike fly, also I'm guessing that half that fly would work well for the perch here in the UK. Some excellent tips on using zonker strips too. Also many thanks for sharing Oskar's blog...there's definitely some gold in there! Regards from the UK. 😎

    • @Gunnar_Brammer
      @Gunnar_Brammer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oskar's blog is awesome! I honestly think the fly is a bit small to "target" pike, but you certainly get the accidental by catch. The Trout Nuggets (not XL) are exactly that, a single hook version to imitate smaller forage. I have an old video up if you can find it. There is a sculpin/goobie and baitfish version.

    • @RalphBellairs
      @RalphBellairs 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it would probably suffice for the pike in my local canal...they only run to low doubles. Also I haven't yet got a rod powerful enough to throw large streamers - my heaviest fly rod is only a #8. I'm looking for a pike fly rod in my price range at the moment, but the good ones ain't cheap and the cheap ones ain't good!

    Great fly, I tied today a couple. But where did you get Ahrex Predator hook in size 1, the smallest I found is size 2/0. I substitute it with Gamakatsu B10S size 2, I'm not sure that it will keep right proportion.

    • @Gunnar_Brammer
      @Gunnar_Brammer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      a B10s in a 2 should be just fine. I've also used Partridge Attitude Streamer hooks in size 1, as well as the new Ahrex Trout Predator series. Just make sure the fishmask doesn't reduce the hook gap by a substantial amount and you'll be good to go.

    • @olegkagan4528

    Gunnar, Great videos! Do you think these could be upsized for big pike or even musky? If so what do you recommend for a hook size, and would the rabbit strips have long enough hair on them to keep a good proportion?

    • @richardwhite9682
      @richardwhite9682 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you want strips with longer hair, you might look into Finn Raccoon zonker strips. The hair is at least twice as long as rabbit yet soft and flowing.

    Why did you elect to use the fish mask over a Tear Mender head or something? Adhesive heads usually get too thin for the action of this fly?

    • @Gunnar_Brammer
      @Gunnar_Brammer  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 'Plastic Cone" us a FlymenFishingCo "Fish Mask", in the video I am using the size 7mm, which is design for 7mm eyes and smaller.

    Hey Gunnar , I would like to know if you can put some short footage from your flies in the water so we can see the action of it. Would be awesome to see your art "alive" alex

    • @Gunnar_Brammer
      @Gunnar_Brammer  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I definitely hope to Alex, but filming while fishing is trickier than I expected. Hopefully there will be some goodies coming out this fall before Winter sets in up here. Should have a new boat coming in that will simplify the filming process!

    Gunnar i made some flyies like these with zonker but now since i am fishing them for a few months the furr comes off the hide and the hide itself looks like shit to. Is there anything i can do about it or do i just accept that zonker flyies have an expire date ?
    Alex

    • @Gunnar_Brammer
      @Gunnar_Brammer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Alex, flies, especially those built from natural materials certainly have expatriation dates, but a few months sounds pretty solid to me. The rabbit hide is always a hit/miss material. The action in the water is wonderful, but once the hide dries and stiffens, it can be frustrating. The hide however has always loosened back up for me once i get it back in the water, and I haven't had issues fishing zonker patterns for multiple seasons. I have however, never experienced fur simply coming off the hide, and wonder if the quality of the product was low, or if you are fishing for "toothier" critters such as pike.
