Great review. I'm one year into ownership of a Ram 2500 4x4 Cummins Big Horn in white with the Night Package. It's my storm trooper. :) I tow a 2K lb trailer and an 89 K5 with a lot of armor and gear, somewhere around 10K total. The tow/haul with auto exhaust brake mode is awesome, example: descending 6% grades for 8 miles (white towing) and only touching the brake pedal 4 times is relaxing and saves the brakes - it works like a downhill cruise control. Laramie and Limited are definitely nice trim levels, but I agree, can be over the top for my purpose too. A daily driver, but indented to haul, tow and camp out of, yet still a trim package which gets oodles of complements.
I have a night edition 1500 Limited Ecodiesel and love it. The 2500 really suffers when you add the Cummins to it, that's a heavy engine and it hurts the payload. If you want an HD diesel you're probably best to go right to a 3500.
Another great video full of great tips and info. If payload is your concern or you need an inbed camper you get a Gas version. Diesel deducts from payload because it weighs 2x vs Gas.
I guess you’ve completely missed the point of a HD truck. You buy it for the diesel (the reason they are sold 9.9/10 over gas) If you need the payload, you get a Dually.
@@specforged5651 That is such a dated and ignorant opinion. The 6.4 Hemi gives you 410 HP and 429 FP of torque along with 1000 pounds more payload capacity over the cummins. Combine that with the fact that you don’t have the maintenance nightmares associated with the diesel emissions systems and of course a purchase price that is about $10,000.00 less than the diesel means that your default position should be to get the Hemi. My 2019 Bighorn Crew cab 4wd has a payload rating of over 3000 pounds and a tow rating of over 14000 pounds. There is definitely a place and a need for a diesel, but especially with a Ram… it should really be paired with a 3500.
Bought a 2021 1500 Laramie 2 weeks ago. Diamond black, sport package, 5.7, 3.92 locker and a few other goodies. Traded in my 2017 2500 Laramie CTD. Was a good deal for me as I got what I paid for the truck 3.5 years ago.
Painted bumpers and grill is how entry level, base model trucks used to come. Now manufacturers have you convinced its an upgrade you have to pay extra for. I for one am not a fan.
Diesel 3/4 ton trucks do not make any sense. They have way to low of a payload number to be usable and you can't even max out the towing capacity like you showed in this excellent video.
Great real world video guys. You are dead on about the kids coming back to help 😆 Oh, and if you can find one guy that actually uses his truck for towing or loading stuff in the back for work that never overloads it I’ll tip my hat and buy you a cold one.
“You could have a rave back there”😂 So where’s the video of that? I have the same truck Laramie White/Night and am absolutely loving it so far. Only 1800 miles so far, but it’s been great. Well, other than the backup camera deciding not to work from time to time.
If you're buying a 2500, stick to the hemi. There's no real reason to buy a 2500 with the diesel because the payload just isn't there. Plus the mega cab and ram boxes also eat your payload. If I remember correctly a hemi crew cab without the boxes has about 1450lbs more payload than the cummins megacab with boxes. The cummins is about 700, the cab about 550 and the boxes about 200. The 6.4 hemi is still capable of towing in the 12k-14k range and anything above that you should really have a 1 ton, especially if you're towing on the regular. If they offered that 5.0 V8 cummins in the ram HD, it would save about 200lbs and probably net a slightly better fuel economy from smaller weight and displacement.
I believe that Case has the Cummins 3.9, aka the 4bt. This is 100% a Cummine motor and not built by case. 4 cyl version of the 6bt in 1st and 3nd Gen Dodge trucks.
I hate the blacked out look personally. I own my first black vehicle now and it shows every scratch, dent and speck of dirt. It looks awesome when it's clean but it's dirty by the end of the day.
@Fisher Montgomery you can go up to a 10800 GVWR on F250 as well (with diesel, and trims up to Lariat I believe)…GM is up to 11300 GVWR. At that point though on those trucks, it seems logical to just pay another $1k and move up to a 1 ton anyway. As far as I know, there’s not a lot of benefit of the Ford/GM 3/4 tons…where as the Ram 2500 has a better unloaded ride because of the rear suspension. I tested a Big Horn diesel (nicely equipped) that had a payload of 2100 lbs. Not great, but as long as it’s not too loaded, it might still make sense for some.
@@IntothewestOkotoks you hit it perfectly. Ram only offers the 10k pound GVWR, whereas the other manufacturers offer the higher ratings to offer more payload. The truck can handle far more than rated. I have a 2500 Bighorn and it handles my camper and gear perfectly.
I had a 2018 rebel with a payload of 800lbs, I was new to trucks and didnt bother to check payload or tow capacity. So I ended up towing my dump trailer around 11,000 pounds with roofing material and wood, and had 4 adults in the cab, along with about 900lbs of tools, coolers, and miscellaneous stuff in the bed. The truck handled it pretty well to be honest, I dont know why the payload and tow ratings are so low when they can actually haul more.
Just got same truck but 3500 mega cab black night HO Cummins wish they would make a new bed size for mega available like 7 foot proportionally wood look good and always nice a little bit longer

I don't like black vehicles because they are just too damn hot in the summer. The A/C can't hardly keep up on a hot day. Go to a dealership and lay your hand on a black truck and then lay your hand on a white truck. Huge difference.
I though the case would be heavier. I own a 580 k extend a hoe 4x4 full cab and it hits the scales a little over 17k. My dodge pulls it but definitely know it’s back there.
I honestly have no idea why the payload is so low. Watch any video with these 2500s supposedly overloaded and these things handle the weight amazingly. I think RAM just wants to sell more 3500 truck that cost more lol.
I have a 2020 Ram 2500 Limited MegaCab. I went with the 6.4 Hemi and 4.10 rear end along with the Air Suspension. I wanted the better ride of the 2500 and did not need a diesel, especially with the low payload number. I tow a 30' 9000 pound Travel Trailer so the big Hemi gives me plenty of power (its rated to tow over 16k). If I had needed the diesel I would have gone with a 3500. Not sure why anybody would go with the diesel in the 2500. Tells me they did not really NEED the diesel.
The 3500 has an extra stiff set of leaf springs vs a 2500 ...So a set if air bags and you have the sane truck as a 3500 but have softer ride when they're set lower . And year your 6.4 is " rated" for the weight and they are slow as fuck pulling a hill .
My family and I bought a 33ft travel trailer on a whim without doing any research last week. The salesman told me my 2017 F150 v8 5.0litter w/ tow package would have no problem towing it lol. It was a little bit of a struggle when I hit some big hills on the way home so I started to research about tow ratings and all that. The dry weight of the travel trailer is 6,660 LBS. I'm looking into getting a ram 2500, but its hard to find one in stock and they are so expensive. Do you think it's a "must" to upgrade to an HD truck? My max payload is around 1700 lbs I think, and I'm pretty sure I'm exceeding that just putting the trailer on. Also, do you have an informational video specifically about tow ratings? Any advice is helpful. thanks
I tow a travel trailer that size and I went with the 23 ram 2500 cummins. I had a 19 f150 ecoboost and the wind from passing vehicles just moved it all over the road. The 2500 stays in place when cars pass and hitting bumps when crossing bridges. The power was never a problem with the f150, just the truck was so light, 4900lbs vs the ram at 7700lbs.
Now thanks to the federal government that will impose 10% Luxury tax on top of that $108 thousand sticker price, plus licence fee and federal and provincial taxes to the tune of 140 thousand dollars out the door in Canada. Good news no price gauging from dealership in Canada. Not like in the USA 😳😳
@@VFio689 yes on luxury trucks also.If you order a trx ram truck that well over $100 thousand dollars Canadian you will pay a luxury tax .For what I read if you finance monthly it will be included also with other taxes and fees. If you lease that luxury vehicle the government wants that 10 percent luxury tax up front first.so basically your first down payment will be minimum $10 thousand dollars to the government. It’s about time that the really rich people start to pay more taxes. Canada needs to make more income for the COVID-19 hand outs and loans to citizens and businesses that had their jobs and work on hold or out of business.
It's actually driven by when going over 9900 Registered Gross Weight put you into a commercial license and yearly safeties, etc, etc. Having driven a 21 2500 recently, they are clearly 3/4 ton's in numbers only. They are far stiffer and more capable than one tons of a decade ago. The boys were taking a risk by pulling that backhoe, because the Ministry would pull them in a heartbeat for towing commercially without the paperwork.
The 3/4 ton trucks have a maximum GVW of 10k pounds. Subtract the weight of the truck and what is left is your payload. This truck must weigh roughly 8500 pounds. I have an older F-250, regular cab, two wheel drive with a gas engine and it's payload is over 4k pounds. The empty weight of the truck and GVW limits are the issue, not it's capability.
The 10k is for classification through manufacturer. The Ram 2500/3500 SRW share same frame, axles, brakes, motor/trans (non HO) Ram just classified due to bureaucratic reasons. The coil springs are the only real difference 2500-3500, add air bags and you can easily overload on paper and still be well within the trucks abilities
Yup, if you look at the axle ratings Frnt/Rr 2500 & 3500’s there rated 6000lbs Frnt and 7000lbs so 13klbs is the real Gvwr but 2500’s are rated down to meet the 3/4 ton classification and are therefore taxed less on registrations.
That’s why most people towing with the 3/4 ton diesel trucks really should be running 1 ton trucks. 3/4 diesel payloads are pretty low. My F150 has the same payload as this Ram. And no I don’t think I can pull anywhere near as much or as well as this pickup.
I have a 2012 2500 4x4 Crew cab short bed and my payload 2410lbs. No clue why the new Rams are only at 1500lbs. I guess they have gotten that much heavier?
It all depends on spec. Some Ram 3/4 configurations have over 4,000lbs of payload. When they're loaded like this, a Limited Mega Diesel, the payload will be much lower.
I just got a new Ram 2500 night edition Big Horn…purposely stayed away from the loaded models and diesel…my payload is 2810 lbs (Big Horn, group 2, tow tech, bed group and Ramboxes)…similar diesel with no Rambox or spray in that I tested was 2100 lbs. still too low for what the diesel is good for.
I personally love the night edition package, especially on RAM's HD lineup, but I honestly _hate_ it with the black paint! What's the point of black accents.... on a black body? They're accents! They just become invisible if the body's black too! Stupid combination I think. But for literally any other color combination, I absolutely love the night edition!
Manufacturers need to build these tow/payload numbers with optioned trucks. If you buy a Mega cab Cummins you are going to have options. Kind of ridiculous 🙄. No one says yes let's buy a 75k plus truck and say oh can't put anything over the axles.
This truck looks fantastic, but the payload on this particular model is a joke. I'm looking at a Ram 2500 Cummins, but will probably go with a Laramie crew cab. Something that will handle over 2000lbs payload.
I like the back hoe. Is the back hoe a 4wd? The rear bucket looks more like a trench bucket...maybe you can work part time with AECOM and install Fibre optics.

Really depends on the type of pin box the trailer has. However, in general, the Ramboxes cut down the number of trailers that the truck will work with.

Dont be sold by interior. I went back to Ford f350 6.7

My RAM 1500 door sticker says 1501lbs payload, and I have a crew cab. - That’s really disappointing.
But just imagine how disappointed you would be seeing a 1500lb payload rating on the sticker of your 2500!
I'll stick with my 03 7.3 450 I've got 7600lbs of available payload per cat scale
Luxury tax on trucks now?
I think the low weight rating is for the sake of warranties
It's actually driven by when going over 9900 Registered Gross Weight put you into a commercial license and yearly safeties, etc, etc. Having driven a 21 2500 recently, they are clearly 3/4 ton's in numbers only. They are far stiffer and more capable than one tons of a decade ago. The boys were taking a risk by pulling that backhoe, because the Ministry would pull them in a heartbeat for towing commercially without the paperwork.
My 2021 STX F-350 7.3 Godzilla, 4.30 gear 10 Speed , ⚙️, is rated for 20,000 lbs Gooseneck, 15K bumper pull. 4000 lb payload capacity and I didn’t spend $88K for that Limited thing ! 🤣
13.9 mpg... My 1995 k1500 might get 16 on the highway empty. More like 15
@B B easily. I don't tow heavy. 5k at most and it eats the gas
Only my opinion but the blacked out look is so played out, it dates back many years, and I just saw a blacked out GMC Terrain!!!
Yeah all black looks ridiculous imo, everything is like blended there's like no contrast
Beware of service Department
Needs bigger tires!
@@jimmy450r 3500 h.o have 12" rear vs 11.5 for 2500 and 3500 non h.o

Always check the door sticker. Good luck.
I like the back hoe. Is the back hoe a 4wd? The rear bucket looks more like a trench bucket...maybe you can work part time with AECOM and install Fibre optics.
2WD - and yes it came with the trench bucket and the 40-inch grave digger bucket. I'll find an 24 inch bucket somewhere.
I love ram but im just not mega crew fan
Don't see too many black trucks in Texas....just too hot
TOO DAMN MUCH!!!

😂 108K. Really, is that even possible to have a market that buys this truck. The Black Edition shows all the dust and dirt. I would like the white with chrome.
A buddy with a Ram 2500 diesel worth Ramboxes was told the boxes make a 5th wheel impossible to tow. Anybody whose hear that?
Really depends on the type of pin box the trailer has. However, in general, the Ramboxes cut down the number of trailers that the truck will work with.
1500 pounds of payload makes this truck useless for commercial use. DOT will be happy to jam you hard with fines and leave you out of service.
100000 truck lol
Always owned fords, purchased a 2019 ram 2500 Cummins Laramie, i was sold by interior and Cummins. I tow 13000 to 16000 lbs on daily basis. Ram would pull the weight but it was all over the road , weight of trailer just pushed this truck around, sloppy front and rear axles, noisy drivetrain, horrible shifting patterns, slack in drivetrain, clunk sound going into gear especially reverse. Dont be sold by interior. I went back to Ford f350 6.7
Sounds like a bias review. I have a 2020 ram 2500 diesel limited mega cab and I pull a 14000k travel trailer and I experience zero issues you've experienced with yours.
When I drive up to the interior in bc all I see are f350 on the side of the road up in flames.
Each to there own I guess.
I've been driving dodge since 05 and I've had relatively zero issues with them minus ur normal wear and tear.
Sounds like you never drove a Ford. Ram 2500 is terrible for towing. Dangerous especially the spongy brakes.
@@rontopping2048 I'll never drive a Ford. Don't like the look and they have the ugliest interior. Either way, everyone is entitled to there own opinion. My 2500 with air ride tows beautifully & effortlessly!!

Everyone and their dog is buying blacked out trucks. I hate that look and wish the blacked out fad would go away. To each their own I guess. The payload number is laughable on this 3/4 ton truck. Why buy a heavy duty truck with half ton numbers? These big trucks are meant to work, not just show how manly of a man you want to appear.
stop reviewing cars you guy's fit trucks better!
