I put a crate beside my bed. Took her out in the garden at 4-5 in the morning. Immediately after I took her up in my bed and we slept for another 4-5 hours. She knew directly that she slept at her place in the evening but she was allowed to come up in the bed in the morning. Worked perfect. Now she sleeps in my bed all night though but she is just a small 15 month mastiff. 😂

This is so well timed Will, thank you.
I started watched your videos when you got Mabel and love the way you started your crate training and explained it so well step by step. So I went out on your recommendation and got one and not looked back, I have to say the crate has been a god send, and I have always left it downstairs we had a few cries over 20 minute period over the first a 3/4 nights and then he settled. He gets straight in at night and often takes himself away during the day and uses it.
We are at the stage that we want him to have more space but need to take it slow as touch wood he hasn’t chewed anything yet but don’t want to come back to a torn up sofa haha. Got to trust him little by little. 👍🏻👍🏻

Totally agree my lab was crate trained and he’s got a thick comfortable bed even the kids like it he’s even happy to let them in to his domain my only mistake I’ve made is the fact he pulls but on a lead stupidly this is my own fault but with tough love he does eventually listen and is alway better by the end of the walk his recall is perfect and because he’s obsessed with me I can’t get away from him if I tried lol 😆

Won't the tough love approach make them think of the crate as punishment? I tried the tough love approach and he will not voluntarily go into his crate now. I'm sure I've set myself back on crate training by using the tough love method. On the 3rd night I had to sleep on the sofa which he was okay with. Can't put in my bedroom and slowly move away as we have an adult cat

I'm having a really hard time getting my Lab to sleep through the night. She arrived at my house 20 days ago. And she is just over 2 months old. She wakes up in the middle of the night and seems to be bored. Want to play with us. And she doesn't stop barking until we get her. But we live in an apartment, we worry about noise, due to neighbors. We don't know what to do. She sleeps really well until around 3a.m.

Im on my second night with my new chocolate lab, he’s been a joy. Night time has been a struggle. I live in an apartment so I don’t and can’t have a dog bark all night. Tonight I tried putting his play pen in my bedroom thinking he would be okay but he quickly barked cried and howled. I caved and let him sleep in my bed again. Ultimately I wanted him to sleep in my bed but I liked the idea of him having his own place to sleep so I wouldn’t wake up as much with him in the night. Overall he’s feeling fine but the struggle is real lol.

We are talking about Puppies right ? How can you recommand for a puppy sleeping at night in a crate assuming the puppy will need to potty every 1-2 hours .. It seems not practical for people who work (which most of us do) ? Crate training for puppy should be EXCLUSIVELY for people who can get him out from the crate 12-14 time a day !

Exactly this should be mentioned in these videos, if people miss the alarm clock through the night then a puppy is forced to mess it’s own bed and it will stress it out bigtime.

We have a Labrador Puppy, now 15 weeks old. Got her with 9 weeks. She sleeps in a crate right beside our bed. Don't see a need to move her out of the bedroom. Puppies usually do not pee or poop where they sleep, so our dog just starts to make some noises to wake me up and we then go for potty into the garden. First 3 weeks it was like 2 to 3 times a night, now it's usually one time.
My husband and I both work full time, I fully in home office (wouldn't get a dog just to then let it stay alone at the house half the day...). Thought I am quite tired right now, the crate works absolutely fine for us.
Also, during the day she is on a leash either on the couch or on my desk when I am working. The crate is only for the nights.
So yeah, we still have some peeing and pooping in the house when she doesn't feel like going outside (she's not that exited to leave the comfy and warm house) but she didn't make into our home at night at all, ever, since she spends her nights in mentioned crate.
