I’ve changed the throttle actuators for upgraded ones , it has a full Bmw service history ( 90,000 miles ) , I’ve only used this as a weekend toy never commuting that’s a no no , always warm the engine and gearbox to temperature keeping the revs below 3k that’s a must as this is where people go wrong thus rod bearing issues in the early years , 10W-60 oil Castrol edge only ( as recommended by M mechanics at BMW ) , I’ve owned it for nearly 4 years now with no issues as did the previous owner who treated it the same , it’s a fantastic car to drive on a Sunday morning after being at work all week…. smiles per gallon guys that’s what it’s about. 😎🇬🇧🤟
PS: the smg gearbox had been fine and is of it’s day and part of it’s character , I had the E46 M3 before this with smg but that started to play up towards the end of ownership by jumping out of second gear but wow what a car to own probably one of the best cars to drive for the money.

My first E60 M5 was an alpine white smg, and although it was pretty and fun when she worked, it was constantly going into "limp mode". I luckily totalled it by hitting some black ice and I got out of that lemon 😆. But the car left such an impression on me I looked around and found a black E60 M5 with the magical third pedal! Having now owned both smg and manual they're night and day different. I've had my second M5 for over 4 years now and absolutely love it! My point is that these cars are incredible when the work. Spend the time and some extra cash and get one with a stick and you'll never regret it.

@@AnwarAndCars 6 speed is actually slower then the smg3 but nothing feels like a real shift with the 6 speed :)

Great Video. Love the details you shared. I didn't know about a semi dry-sump system for the E60 M5. Surprised this has so few views. Keep up the good work.

Great review of a great car. I have a 2010 that has 64k. Love my M5!

I have the same color, but mine is 2008 at 115k. I’ve had it going on 3 years and I’ve done a laundry list of preventative - the car has been amazing except for some expensive SMG issues. If I could go back I would have manual swapped it, but I still love it. SMG is still fun when working. I’ve put 22k mikes on mine

What issues did you have with the smg, and what were the symptoms prior to the problems?

@@AnwarAndCars my clutch and Smg pump pretty much went at once.. I was getting an occasion yellow cog before this happened. When all that went down I replaced everything possible (clutch, fly wheel, PLCD, Smg motor pump, slave, clutch pin, misc o rings, and I’m sure I’m forgetting other small stuff). After the repair we had the code 510E still present and I was never able to resolve this - so I still had random yellow cogs that would pop and immediately go away(this only happened every so often but got worse over time). Anyways I drove for 10 k miles after said repair and the car was great until last week I had a weird shift from 2nd to 1st and car felt clunky and had yellow cogs every time I would stop. This happened 80 miles from home. I parked for the night at my girlfriends and drove back 2 days later no problem until I got off the freeway yellow cogs again and trans didn’t feel as smooth as before.
My mechanic and I think it’s some possible O rings we missed that is causing the issue on the transmission solenoid rack I think. There is a ton in there that we didn’t realize we should have replaced. We think this because I’ve literally replaced everything else possible in the trans.
With that being said this car is amazing but a lot of problems with the SMG - I still don’t regret it - just is what it is. If you want this car you need to have 5k set aside at all times just incase (this excludes the rod bearing issue - just get that done) the 6mt are much more reliable, and I hope to own and supercharge one day.
Sorry for the long post. Hoped that helped.

@@user-oj6vl8io3f I’ve had my m6 for almost 15k miles now and the clutch doesn’t seem to bite as hard as it did before. Every time I shift it feels like it takes an extra .25 secs to clamp down on the clutch, it feels like it’s letting it slip a little too much and you can hear the power come on just slightly late. I’m trying to figure out if my actual clutch I just getting thin (I did the clutch reset with the paddles many times, now it doesn’t really make a difference). Or if my smg pump isn’t at full pressure, or maybe even the rear main seal is leaking causing a slippery clutch. The only good thing is that the clutch doesn’t slip when I floor it in low rpms in a high gear, so it can’t be that bad.
Maybe I’m just nitpicking lol I haven’t had any yellow cogs or anything

@@AnwarAndCars I would just drive it until the SMG has a failure then replace everything possible when you do the job so you don’t have to pull it. Brand new clutch feels great and I would recommend euro Smg tune. It smoothed my shit out pretty nice.
Also if I could go back I would have been saving parts for a manual swap and would have just swapped it instead, because now I’m dealing with more Smg problems(I don’t blame the car). The price I paid to rebuild my Smg was close to a manual swap at the time.

It’s an awful car I had one. Hideous round town, terrible sound on start up. Always in the wrong gear. The only good thing is when you drive it hard. Better to avoid at all costs.

for the record most american E60 M5 had software issues with the smg and the engine... this can be fixed with a software update
