That is especially sad after all that work to dig and divide them. I left mine in the ground and hopefully they survived our 12 degree freeze here in Gresham.

Exactly!! Ugh all that time and effort, that’s what also made this so sad. 🥹
I have several in the ground that seem to be doing great, I pulled one out and it looks good, so I think yours might be okay too. 🤞

Why are you storing tubers in 8b? I'm in SC also 8b and we leave them in ground over winter.

Last year was my first time planting dahlias. I wanted to test a method that wouldn't require digging up tubers and storing them. I planted dahlias in 55 gallon barrels cut in half with drain holes. I had great flowers but probably smaller plants than if I'd planted straight in the ground. When fall came, I cut the stems down to the ground and left them in the containers. Before the Oregon winter rains I covered the containers with a clear plastic roofing panel to prevent water from getting in the barrels. Yesterday I dug into one of the 55 gallon barrels and the tubers looked strong and healthy. Now I'm waiting for them to sprout. I'm curious if I can encourage earlier sprouts with this method.
I also experimented with "cut leaf" propagation. I was able to propagate dahlias really well, some of my cuttings grew as large as the mother plant in a single season and were covered with flowers. This season I'd like to test it further, I noticed one varitety I "cut leaf" may have reverted back to an original dahlia coloring instead of keeping the mothers flower color. I'm hoping to keep the barrels as mother plants that could be propagated from to plant out other areas of my gardens.

Wow! I am completely INTRIGUED by this! Covering the barrels was such a GREAT call. I would have done the same to help prevent rot. When you dug up the dahlias how was the soil in the barrels, was it dry?
Also I love your method of propagating! What an excellent way to grow your stock. How far in advance are you taking cuttings? I’m so impressed by everything you did! 😍

I also threw in an extra layer of mulch on top before putting on the winter plastic cover. Soil was slightly moist when uncovered 3 days ago.
For cuttings, I learned of the method as my flowers were midbloom last year, it took about 1-2 weeks for the cut pieces to start to root. When one of them showed new leaves, I stuck it in a barrel immediately and within that one season it grew as large as the parent plant and flowered just as nice.

So sorry you lost so many tubers! Love all your insights! I covered my dahlias again this year with your instructions and they seem to be doing ok, saw some sprouting today when I check my beds. Glad to see you bought new tubers! Can’t wait to see how they turn out for you! ☺️

Aww thanks Tammie!! I’m so excited your dahlias are overwintering well! I will say, every time I have left ours in the ground, they get a head start and bloom earlier than the others which is exciting! Are you adding more to your garden this year?
I’m pretty excited for our new dahlias, I got my hands on more KA dahlias, I’m looking forward to those. 🥰

I started petite floret seeds this year and half germinated so I’m exited to see new baby plants/new flower varieties they will become! ❤

I lost many of my tubers this year too, I feel your pain. This year I’m going to try grow bags, and if you have information on this, I would love to hear it!

Oh, how disappointing! I live in the Happy Valley area outside of Portland, and yes, the ice storm killed a lot of plants that have lasted numerous years and that have always lived outside through every season. So sad! I dig my dahlias and store them in my insulated garage and put them in cardboard boxes filled with a shredded paper vermiculite mix. I sprinkle them with water maybe once a month if needed. I didn’t loose any. So,so pleased!

I’m in Portland and all the ones I had in containers that I put undercover are mush too.😢 My ones in the ground are fine.

Ohhh no, I’m sorry. 😞 Isn’t it so sad? But now we know what we can and can’t get away with when it comes to how the dahlias will store. Also I’m happy to hear all the ones in the ground are safe, that’s the same case with us. 🥰

So happy to see you again. I had some tubers rot in ground, tiny white worms in it. Need to treat soil before use that spot to plant new ones?
Pretty new at this and the new location of garden. Cascade Locks, oregon, 8a.

Aww thanks Mary!! I’m sorry about your dahlia tubers, it’s never fun when they rot and the bugs get to them.
We have been using nematodes in our entire garden which has helped a lot, especially with grubs. In your case I wouldn’t worry just yet, anytime something is rotting bugs tend to find their way to it. You could spread the nematodes as a preventable measure, I would also recommend you amend you soil with a bit of compost before planting, it really gives the tubers a good start. 🥰
