The St Matthew Passion (Passio secundum Matthaeum, BWV 244) for solo voices, soprano in ripieni, double choir and double orchestra is Bach’s largest ensemble work, but at a length of around three hours, it’s also his longest. This monumental piece not only perpetuated the tradition of Good Friday passion plays, but also expanded the possibilities of the genre - something that induced Bach’s wife Anna Magdalena to describe it simply as the ‘Great Passion’.
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750) composed the St Matthew Passion for Good Friday 1727. It received its premiere at the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig. Bach revised the original scoring in 1736, producing a version since regarded as the definitive one. It was Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809 - 1847) who rediscovered the St Matthew Passion more than 100 years later, arranging its performance at the Berliner Singakademie in 1829. The major Bach composition was significantly reworked in accordance with contemporary tastes. Mendelssohn’s performance ushered in a veritable Bach Renaissance.
Christian Friedrich Henrici (1700 - 1764), Bach’s Leipzig librettist, who worked under the pseudonym Picander, was responsible for writing the words for the St Matthew Passion. It is viewed as his most successful sacred poetry. The libretto presents a dialog between the Daughter of Zion and the faithful souls, which may have been the reason why Bach opted for a double choir and orchestra. This interplay creates - in both the libretto and the music - an exuberant Baroque outpouring that nevertheless maintains uniformity.

Ich konnte den Thomanerchor schon oft in der Leipziger Thomaskirche erleben. Es ist immer wieder Gänsehaut pur, grad dort diese Nähe zu Bach zu spüren. Danke an Chor und alle, die Bach's musikalisches Erbe so bewahren.
Obviously probably the best and most accurate performance especially in Bach’s own Church and indeed a celebrated conductor. Personally I would have liked the tempo a little slower.

Superb manifestation of Bach’s extraordinary vision. This was a moving and beautiful performance, wonderfully conducted with just the right balance of quiet reflection and drama - tempi perfectly judged. And wonderful to hear a choir with boys’ voices. Gosh, what an amazing achievement. A testament to this monumental achievement is that so many sections of it have passed into common repertoire. Love all the generations involed. All of the singers were excellent, but I have to point out that the narrator, Patrick Grahl, is superb.

Allein wegen der Sprache ist es immer ein Genuß, von deutschsprachigen Chören ausgeführte Matthäuspassion zu hören Man fühlt sich irgendwie zuhause.
Endlich: Die komplette Matthäus-Passion auf einer CD!? ... Ich mag schnelle Tempi, aber das geht mir größtenteils zu weit.
Tuve el inmenso gozo de asistir en la misma iglesia de Santo Tomás el 16 de junio de 2017 a la interpretación del oratorio de la Pasión según San Juan , en el festival Bach de ese año. Recuerdos que llevaré conmigo hasta el final de mi vida por lo extraordinario del acontecimiento. Maravillosa la música del genio único y universal de la música.

Thank you Andreas Reize for this wonderful interpretation, especially for taking the opening chorus in this fast and crisp tempo. For, as Albert Schweitzer the great Bach scholar says in his book "J-S Bach the Musician-poet", this chorus is not a solemn introduction to the drama about to unfold, but the description of a frightened multitude("ce morceau, avec son thème lugubre, ses harmonies heurtées qui traînent sur une basse agitée, ses cris et ses réponses....donne l'impression du pêle-mêle bruyant d'une foule effarée").

Bellísima interpretación de una de las obras capitales del gran maestro J.S. Bach y realizada en la misma iglesia de Santo Tomás de Leipzig donde el maestro interpretó la mayor parte de sus obras sacras como parte de los servicios religiosos de la iglesia luterana alemana a la que sirvió con profunda fe y devoción. Escucharla aún por el medio electrónico es sentir la presencia misma del espíritu del maestro alemán. Cuanto más los que la escuchan en viva presencia. Bravo!!!!

Thank you! A wonderful performance. I thought the tempos were perfect and moved the drama along. Bach was not in the habit of writing a dirge. His rhythms are all based on dance.
As this whole work is about the death of Jesus Christ and is in essence a contemplation and a lament, treating it as dirge would be entirely appropriate. And any rhythm can become a 'dance' rhythm under certain conditions.
Not everything Bach wrote is based on dances, and some dances are slow and stately like the Sarabande.
Wonderful interpretation! Love the freshness which lies in Bachs music. Great effort!

There is still discussion about the tempo. Indeed this performance has a high tempo but despite of that it’s still a wonderfull performance. Thanks for sharing, we Dutch in particuly are very fond of Bachs Matthäus Passion.
BACH´S MUSIC CAN BE PERFORMED AT VARIOUS TEMPOS AND STILL BE VIABLE. WE MUST JUST BE OPEN TO NEW EXPERIENCES.
When I saw it was only 2.5 hours, yes, I expected a more rapid tempo than what I have listened to before (a fair number as this is one of my favorite pieces and have also seen it live a couple of times). It's Good Friday now so a very good time to listen to it for me...
More like a waltz tempo than a requiem. Almost a sacrilege.

Ich finde auch alles ein bisschen "durchgehetzt". Toll finde ich, dass das Continuo bei den Kamerasequenzen, wie sonst so oft nicht, auch gebührend vertreten ist.
Ich bin erleichtert, dass ich vielleicht doch nicht der einzige bin, der diese Darbietung nicht gar so toll findet. So ein rastloses Gehetze! Die international um sich greifende Besessenheit, unbedingt eine Version anzubieten, die anders ist, "novel" und ach so kreativ... Auch handwerklich gesehen ist das ein Affront. Falls man sich entscheidet, die secco-Rezitative nicht zu dirigieren, okay! Wenn aber ja, dann sollte man wissen, wie man das macht. Es ist noch gar nicht so lange her, dass Leute, die bedeutende Meisterwerke dirigieren wollten, das wirklich studiert und gelernt haben - jahrelang und mit all ihrer Hingabe an die Kunst des Dirigieren. So wie hier gezeigt geht das nicht.
Gehetzt ist noch Milde- Reize hat das Werk und seine Tiefe nicht verstanden....nicht mehr und nicht weniger

Wunderschöne Aufführung dieser großartigen und perfekt komponierten Matthäuspassion mit herrlichen Stimmen aller genialen Solisten und gut harmonisierten Stimmen der beiden perfekt tranierten Chöre sowie gut vereinigten und perfekt entsprechenden Tönen aller Originalinstrumente. Der intelligente und geniale Dirigent leitet das ausgezeichnete Barockorchester in verschiedenen Tempi und mit künstlerisch kontrollierter Dynamik. Alles ist wundervoll!
Vielleicht liegst am hohen Blutdruck des Kantors? Die völlig überhetzten Tempi gehn gar nicht. Ich hätte mich 2 h in der Kirche gequält, ok- ich war , Gott sei Dank, nicht da
WOW! Habe mir diese Aufnahme bis gestern, Karfreitag aufgehoben: Thomaner ohne verklärenden Schleier und entzuckert, entzaubert und doch berührend dramatisch verzaubert! Endlich und hoffentlich bleibt es so in Leipzig! Großartiges Tempo! Schade nur, dass einige der anfänglichen Ambitionen aus meiner Sicht zum Ende hin abflachen: dem Ganzen ein finales Ende zu geben ist m.E. verfehlt, denn das Ende ist offen!

Ich habe die Mathäuspassion schon mehrmals in der Thomaskirche erleben dürfen. Dieses Tempo ist für mein Empfinden zu schnell und ich finde, dass teilweise die Schönheit dieser Bachschen Musik nicht so richtig wahrgenommen werden kann! Da gefielen mir die Auffassungen von Hans-Jochim Rotzsch oder Prof. Biller besser. Die Choräle wirken gehetzt gesungen …
Auch meine Meiung: Reize versteht die Tiefe des Werkes icht , oder kann er mit dem Evangelium nicht so viel anfangen?? Beispiel: O Mensch bewein dein Sünde groß, die Choralfantasie am Ende des 1 Teils, ehe die Tropfen der Tränen vom Weinen trocken sind , ist er beim Schlußchor des Werkes angelangt ;-))))
Ich mag die Aufnahmen von Prof. Hans-Joachim Rotzsch und Prof. Georg Christoph Biller auch sehr. Vor allem die DDR-Aufnahmen der Bach-Kantaten unter Rotzsch sind meine schönsten Aufnahmen. Auch wenn es durch historische Aufführungspraxis nicht mehr so praktiziert wird, haben die Rotzsch-Aufnahmen mit der damaligen Auffassung einen besonderen Charme. Aber ich finde, dass es vielleicht auch mal nicht ganz schlecht ist, etwas frischen Wind und andere Auffassungen reinzubringen. Ich jedenfalls finde Herrn Reize sehr gut. Seine aktuelle CD mit der Aufnahme der h-Moll Messe ist absolute Spitze!
Affect of the piece, acoustics of the space, the symbolic nature of dance - all of those seem disregarded in the tempo of the opening chorus. Just by a tiny bit, however enough to make it out of context. Magnificent voices, musicians, choir. Phrasing, shaping of the motifs, everything else.

Dommage qu'une aussi bonne qualité d'interprètes et de technique instrumentale et vocale passe complètement à côté de l'intensité dramatique de l'oeuvre. Le tempo trop rapide contribue à cet atmosphère où nous avons le sentiment de partir pour une fête. Erreur de sens largement compensée par la qualité de l'ensemble.

Erbarme dich tiene que cantarla un niño/adolescente, sino no es lo mismo. Sólo hay un matthew passion en youtube donde es así.
