  • Here it is folks: the whole shebang. This is my hand-wired plexi clone with parts purchased from Ceriatone, 40-18054 power transformer from ClassicTone, 784-139 output transformer and plastic bobbin choke from Metropoulos (made by Heyboer), and a Mojotone head cabinet in "blackened tuna" tolex.

I also used Sozo mustard caps. The only trouble I'm having is the amp has some trouble handling bass notes clearly, (low E&A) string. I have to turn the bass, and resonance way down, otherwise this amp sounds amazing. I have heard that people have to turn the bass down on plexi's. Maybe it's the tubes I'm using, (NOS Mullard). • @RozsaAmplificationLLC
    @RozsaAmplificationLLC 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    You did right by NOT using Ceriatone transformers and using ones from Heyboer and Magnetic Components. MUCH better quality iron and TONE!!!
    Every Ceriatone I've heard over 10 years....Chupra, King Kong, 2204, etc....all sounded "sterile" to me like something is off. But all loose components and construction are very good. The one common denominator is the iron and transformers, which makes sense and why they can keep the cost down. Transformers are the most expensive item in an amp and quality of materials differ across the world. If you use cheap material, you can cut costs, but of course, tone and performance!

    • @clintn6677
      @clintn6677 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I gotta disagree. Maybe they have changed suppliers but the iron sounds just as good if not better than classictone or heybooer. I've built 7 amps over the past two years trying different transformers. I just buy them from Nik now. I just built my 2nd 2204 in the past 6 months using Nik's transformer this time(used Heybooer on the first one) and the only complaint I have is the ceriatone transformers weigh a ton.

      @@masecardrums thank you very much for replying and trying to help me…my oscillation seems to be coming from the wires solderd to the main board..going to the potentiometers…first i was having trouble with the wire solderd to the 250pf cap..to the right Treble terminal..if i moved that wire anywhere near the input section..the wire itself became microphonic?? It make crackling and static noise coming through the speaker, as i moved it around…as soon as i moved the wire away from the board going towards the center of the board itself, moving towards the back side of the amp..the wire stopped making noise..and was not causing trouble anymore…so i ended up replacing all the wires from the board to the pots..using 22awg 300v wire accept for the 2 wires solderd to (S) and (R) on the board..going to the V2A cathode bypass 3 way switch…i left those 2 alone…they are the Teflon thin wire included in the kit…and the amp runs better now, however if i crank the Master volume past (4) and the Presence is down..then i still get squealing and noise…i found that now the (S) and (R) wires are microphonic..and when i went to redo the wiring going from the board to the potentiometers…this time i ran them all down the center of the board (Undernieth) together….could you tell me? Did you seperate all of your wires? Did you run them seperately going from the board to the pots?
      Your amp sounds great by the way..i also noticed that when i run the amp overdriven..cranking the Normal and Bright volume and keeping the master volume under (4) the sound is not very bright its kind of dull sounding and the treble does not really work at all..its only when the amp is cleaner that i can get it trebly..

    Thank you for such an exceptional and complete review. It gave us a great view of the effect that each switch has on the tone, and what a great tone this amp has!! By the way, what are the pickups this guitar has, and what are their output? I felt the tone was very complex, full, and organic sounding, while the palm mutting hadn't too much "chug-chug"/"punch", characteristic of hard-rock rhythm riffs, which I attribute to lower output pickups. Is that right?

    • @masecardrums
      @masecardrums  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The pickups are Lollar Imperials, which are PAF-style pickups; high wind in the bridge (which has some extra midrange) and regular wind in the neck. They're definitely not super-modern super upper-mid-forward high-output pickups, and the mahogany body and solid rosewood neck of the Albert Lee is a fairly dark sound. If I was doing lots of palm muting I'd probably use an overdrive in front of whichever amp I'm using, and on a plexi I'd definitely set the bass knob very low.

There are some decent TH-cam videos on it, but I’ve owned one. They’re even better in person.

    sounds killer in all aspects & all genres, but not sure how it would do in modern metal, otherwise it sounds as good as anything Alex or Angus woukld use.

    Hi im about to build one of these, did you just follow the wiring diagram? Or did you use a schematic? I noticed some wires labled “C” and “D” for instance, do you simply connect those together where it says “C” somewhere else?

    • @masecardrums
      @masecardrums  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I followed the diagram as best I could (and it has changed a little since I built this amp) but had a couple schematics of the 1987 circuit for reference and read Rob Robinette's articles on Marshall circuits. It's VERY important that your labeled wires (C, in this case) go where they're supposed to go.

      @@masecardrums hi i read that you bought upgraded transformers for this? I asked Nik at Ceriatone, and he said that trannys that work in this would be hard to find? Im building the 100 watt version

      @@masecardrums would you happen to know the reason? Or purpose, as to why some of the wires seem to connect to some component, but instead of leading and connecting to the other component, the wire just ends, with a letter attached to it, you then find the other matching letter, and thats where you connect,??

    • @masecardrums
      @masecardrums  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@historiclp4577 it's just to clean up the diagram, so you can read it. Otherwise there would be wires running all over the place obscuring your view of more important information such as the turret board. Nik has photos of the insides of completed amps for reference. Transformers just seem to be in short supply in general these days, for no specific reason other than it's COVID times.

      @@masecardrums hey man, thank you soo much for replying, if you could answer one more thing?..Looking at the diagram…all the way to the front right, there are the 4 input jacks…then the board behind them.The first wire from the board is a black wire going too ground, then 2 shielded cables, going to 2 different lugs….then there looks too be, a green wire shaped like a “V” on one lug..i assume the ground lug of one of the input jacks….and it looks like each end of this “V” shaped green wire, is going into the center of the black circle over each shielded cable…..Does this mean that, i am to strip enough of each Shielded wire, and connect the center wire to each terminal as it shows…then twist the actual metal shielding from each COAX wire , then solder both shieldings to that one terminal? Of course on the board end, i just solder the input wire from the COAX to the board lug, after applying a sleeve of heat shrink, to cover the shielding? So basically im just grounding each shielding, from each shielded wire at the ground lug of the input jack?

    I could've done without the SS rectifier. When I think "Plexi", I think TUBES!!

    • @GCKelloch
      @GCKelloch ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Marshalls and most tube amps had SS recs from the late 60s on. It just controls how the power supply changes the signal from DC to AC. Tube recs don't respond to transients as quickly. Transients are squashed and more splatty. That can have a nice affect in some amps, but I like the clarity of the faster transients in this amp.

      The thing that is always a bit amusing is that it's not always a bad thing to have a little fizz. People who don't have a ton of experience mic'ing and recording guitar amps are often surprised when you isolate the recorded guitar tracks of some of your favorite artists. The isolated tracks often sound thin and fizzier than expected. That's because you often need that to cut through over drums and the potential keys or second guitar.
