Wow, excellent. This is a true master. Watch how well, and simply, he acts the words. And watch how unafraid he is to use parlando in order to better tell the story. Superb.

As a G&S Fundi, I have recordings of Martyn Green but never seen a video. Thank you. I started my G&S adventure when I was about 10 so came in with Peter Pratt and subsequently John Reed, Thomas Round etc. Now I'm 73 and still listen to my records and watch the D'Oyle Carte videos I have gathered over the years. Problem is..... no one to leave them to. Now I'm In SA it's a different culture. I guess they will end up on a dump somewhere. Sad, ain't it?

A time when "I Am The Monarch of the Seas" would be thought of as the most famous, and not "Modern Major-General"!

The giant flower on Martyn's shirt is probably a reference to Oscar Wilde, a popular cartoon in Punch depicted him as an overly aesthetical overly poetical magical mystical quite artistical ornately fanciful checkered pantsiful nincompoop of a man with a large flower pinned on his shirt.

That's because Martyn Green was putting on his Bunthorne outfit while singing it.

This was my first direct exposure to Gilbert and Sullivan. I'm very grateful for hearing this expert rendition by Martyn Green, although there are better fidelity recordings of him on YT! It's cool that the Omnibus series was produced a long time ago; we should rehash it. Also, Alistair Cooke's narration and interaction is great. How often do the hosts get so involved in a performance like this, without being campy or attempting to upstage the talent? Thank you for freely sharing this content. I can't get Ruddigore's (Robin's) song out of my head!

The pace is a little bit slow. I increased the playback to 1.25 for the proper patter song tempo.

Way back in Grade School I read Green's "Treasury of Gilbert and Sullivan" in the library! I have a copy now, 50+ years later!

He never got over the 1930 style of acting and some bizarre quirks in his singing. Peter Pratt was better in everyway.

Yeah, and George Grossmith never got over that 1880s style of acting either...
