Hidden Burger King Restaurant Found Behind a Wall

  • This Burger King restaurant is frozen in time. It's filled with retro wall decor, wooden booths and old soda machines. The restaurant first opened in 1987 at the concord mall in Wilmington, Delaware. Unfortunately, the restaurant closed 13 years ago and was sealed off behind a wall. The rest of the mall was renovated around it until a curious contractor opened the locked door. Now the mall's owners are hoping someone will step in and breathe new life into this vintage fast-food restaurant.

It was terrifying because you don't expect to see a perfectly preserved 80's restuarant hidden behind a featureless wall. The place is very well preserved almost as if people were just eating there five minutes ago, except there's nobody there except you inside this fossil of the past. How could you not be creeped out, walking into a place like that which has just been sitting under there under your nose and nobody has talked about it?

In the words of my lecturer of interpersonal communication, "Words have no meaning, except the meaning you assigned to them."
The common consensus is that the word, terrifying, conjures an image of a shocking reaction to the presence of a thing, event or person that elicits a negative perception.
Most of us disagree with the word, "terrifying", because there is nothing sinister about a place that is only accessible at a particular time, and at a particular place. It is only terrifying when someone decides to bulldoze this interior design artifact and nobody has built a time machine yet to go back to a time where people find.

I remember some malls and shopping centers in the SE Pennsylvania, South Jersey, and Northern Delaware were slow in 2008-2009 because of the financial crisis. Some of them recovered in 2010, but started to dwindle again years later because of online shopping options. It maybe 15 years since I last stop at Concord Mall. It is not a convenient place to shop unless you live nearby or if you regularly travel on US 202 near the PA/DE border. While I would expect Concord Mall to dwindle over the last 13 years, it is negligent for mall management to not know that a significant retail space was walled off, unoccupied, and never repurposed over the same period.

Kids back then didn't have much to do besides hanging at malls. Imagine, no internet or cell phones. You called your friend from your house and arranged a time to meet at a certain tree inside the mall. If you split up with your friend you would never find him again at again.

    • @chrisbruggers8076

That's what you did in the 80s and 90s. Friday night you met at a fast food restaurant, grabbed a cheap burger, everyone figured out their plans for the night and if you weren't there you sat at home alone. Pre cellphone. I remember getting to the meet up late a few times and missing everyone. You basically just sat and waited until eventually someone else would show up late too. It wasn't uncommon for everyone to meet up at 8pm, then drive by the spot again at 10 to see if anyone else showed up.

Doubt it was "forgotten" either. I'm sure the mall was desperately trying to rent out that space (and a bunch of others) the entire time.

Yeah, this is a complete scam. This was (most?) BK's in the 2000's. Literally closed instead of getting a 2010 era refresh. There's lots of places sitting longer than this even existed for. This is just flat out misrepresentation, and I'm OUTRAGED.
