I really hate all the comments about "He sounds like he's doing a commercial" That T&C is part of his Fixing it Forward. He does a lot for very little. Not to mention how many thousands of people have been helped by his videos. If anyone deserves the right, or has earned the right to do sponsored videos, it's him. Not to mention his Tool Reviews are often extremely fair, even when they are given to him for free as a product review. I truly don't believe Eric would be endorsing a product he thought wasn't a strong product or part of a good company. If Monroe is one of the few companies willing to support ETCG on TH-cam as a medium, then I for one am pleased with Monroe for their willingness to step beyond TV or Print, and move into more modern applications.
Hey Eric, something that works AMAZING on rusted bolts is a 50-50 mix of ATF to straight acetone. It's pretty cheap and works better than almost all products off the shelf. I think you should make a video of you mixing some and trying it out. I think you'll like it. Love the channel!
Hey Eric! I'd like to say thanks for all of the knowledge you have passed onto me over the months of watching your videos, it is worth gold! I'm not a mechanic or even close to it hence why I watch your videos. I have noticed when doing those stabilizer nuts if you get a pry bar while it's partially loosened and pried underneath the nut against the strut it will come loose with a ratchet. Keep making more videos !!
Hey Eric quick tip something I use for sway bar links up here in good old Canada, I take a wire wheel on a drill to them, then lube em up then impact away for the extra 20 seconds of cleaning the rust off 99% the time comes off no problem Love your vids keep up the good work Cheers
A Magnetic Induction Heater made all the difference in the world for me. I have snapped bolts with these impact guns. I am just a home mechanic fixing my own vehicles. The heater cost about $250, but it paid for itself the first time. I had several rusty bolts that wouldn't come lose with penetrating oils and impact guns. After 20 seconds with the heater the nut came right off. It almost feels magical. Suspension parts are the worst.
Agreed, love my Venom HP. One of the most useful tools I have ever purchased. Never realized it until after I tried it. Now, I rarely reach for my torches anymore, since the Venom handles the job easily and much more safely. But it is pricey, I paid about double what you did. But worth every penny to me!
I put two struts on my 93 bonneville and the hardest part was lifting up them heavy struts and aligning the 3 holes in place. I needed an alignment when done. Two people make the job much easier
Seeing a 3rd gen Chrysler minivan without strut tower rot is very rare. With most of them there's nothing left of the top of the tower where the top of the strut mounts. The Chrysler factory fix (subdued recall only if you complained) was a joke using a plate "glued" over the rust. I ended up welding in all new fabricated towers before new struts.
The stabilizer link ball joints are bad with this one... such a cheap part to replace too. If you don't have a buddy, lower the vehicle (1-2 feet off the ground), set the new quickstrut on the knuckle, and use a floor jack under the wheel assemble to gently push and hold the quickstrut in place. Works like a charm.
I've got a Kia Spectra with 170,000 miles and the suspension is all original, the springs and struts were never replaced. They still seem in amazing condition too, they're not leaking and they don't bounce all over the place. Is that unheard of? I had never had a car's struts/shocks last that long before. For all the flak I got for buying a Kia, it sure did treat me right over the past decade.
TIP: On Nissans and Chryslers, Bungee cord the axel so it doesn't pull the inner joint out!!!Around the brake rotor is fine. If it pops out,you will have a bad day. Final torquing of the nuts and bolts are seldom necessary on strut replacements by waiting until the weight of the vehicle is supported. It IS important when doing control arm bushings! if you tighten the bolts B-4 you lower it down, the bushing will rip out/rotate and ruin the bushings.
I have the same sway bar links but I just jack up the car and remove the wheels then jack the wheel knuckle up so that puts a load on the sway bar, then just impact it out. The slot where the links go to will act like a vice grip and lock it from rotating.
I have had success with using a wirebrush on the threads before trying to loosen up rusted nuts like the one on the stabilizer link. The problem with loosening is often that corrosion deposits builds up in the nut stopping it frim moving further out
I don't even mess with the bolts on the linkages. After smacking my thumb and almost losing the nail from the wrench slipping as I hit it with an impact, I just use an angle grinder. Grind it off on both ends, spray it with some black paint where I hit the sway bar, let it dry and put on new linkages.
An electric impact is definitely on the top of my want list. I could have saved so much time if I had one changing out nearly everything on my car. lol
Eric i find a magnet camber level is very hand when replace that type of strut, you take a reading before you disassemble them zero it out then when you reinstall the new struts just set them to zero, you can purchase one on eBay cheap.
You should align the front end after every change made to the front end of a vehicle! Even just new struts without cam bolts or slotted holes can still change the angle the tires sit on the road just enough to make the toe readings off. Never MAYBE its ALWAYS!
Hey Eric, nice video as usual. I'm looking at replacing struts on a Nissan Maxima, should I go with naked or quick ? I see you didn't mention replacing the springs. I can get a pair of naked Monroe's at a fair price. Added work or added cost-what do you think ?
I had pulled the struts off a Nissan that were so badly rusted when I loosened the stabilizer nut, it was so hot that the gloves I was using melted and stick to the nut. Let them cool for a couple of minutes.
I thought that Monroe always suggested tightening the bottom bolts First....Then the top 3 nuts were last to tighten after the tire is back on and lowered to the ground...I guess it is to lessen the chance of damaging the strut mount bearing and stem also....Im doing mine tomorrow on my 07 Buick Lucerne
When i replaced suspension on my alfa 156 (upper and lower arms - struts and springs) on jack stands that was nightmare but the most dreadful thing to deal with was one of the stabilizer link, i ended up cutting it with an angle grinder, no way to break it loose!
156 with good suspension and arms is driving like a dream :-) If you want some painful job, try replace rear trailing arms joints on 146 on your own :-D
if your new stuts are slotted be sure to tell the alingnment guy because most stock struts are not slotted and most times the alignment guy only adjusts factory adjustments
My sway bar links torque bit spot didt strip, they were in really good shape despite the rust. The problem i had was the bit breaking off inside the totque bit hole...mmmm
Hello Eric, I have a question. If the axle joint comes apart, does it mean that the joint is bad? I had one come apart on me, I was able after a while to put it back in, but I'm not sure if I created an issue.
Hi Eric Thanks for some very informative videos. I'm wondering though - you don't seem keen on using anti-seize grease on the nuts and bolts - why? Also, why don't you torque the wheel bolts?
I just bought new struts for my '93 van. It's not so much that they're heavy (they're just under 30 pounds each), but the weight distribution makes them a bit awkward to handle.
supernom We'll get back to those, no worries. As for parts, I have that covered. A viewer from WA is hooking me up with the rest of the parts I need. Thanks for the offer.
+EricTheCarGuy i need to ask a question i bought a pair of sensen quick struts for a 2006 mazda 6 2.3 from ebay they look high quality my question is when i grab the lower part of struts and twist it does not move on both should they twist freely or do they need to be put on car first or are they screwed up and i need to buy monroes?
I wish you'd torque bolts, suspension stuff matters. I realize you haven't had a problem by not properly torquing stuff but that doesn't mean you're doing it right.
dainternetguru Dont be so picky, when you have 20 + years experience you tend to notice if the stuff you bolted on has fallen off, it is feel and finesse. I am not saying torque specs are not important, especially so in some places, but experience does teach you how to guesstimate.
On a job like this I agree with Eric top bolts are about 20-30 pounds witch he's doing by hand 2 pinch bolts about 75-100(but as seen in the vid he slams em on with a impact BUT his impact isn't super strong 99.9% sure if he slapped a torque wrench on it might be 125-140 also petty much every alignment shop will align camber the exact way loosen em with a impact and tighten with a impact
TrueBlueEG8 If torque specs didn't matter then engineers would say "just tighten until it feels tight enough, fuck the specs on the bolt, threads, etc".
Harold Karrington Well it's good to know that your engine will run right but your suspension and steering might not be 100%. I'd rather have a car that turns and stops like new with an engine that's not perfect. Engine important yes... suspension & steering, that's truly critical stuff.
Stabilizer links are fairly cheap and the set i just replaced on a mazda 3 didnt have that nice nut to grab onto on the backside, hence, break out the cut off wheel. Buy new ones.
Hi Eric....Wondering why, with your new Branick compressor available, that you didn't use the original spring and save $$$? Thanks for your great videos!
Hi Eric. A question for ya. After installing these same kind of struts, do they have to be adjusted? Because when i installed mine and then was pushing down and letting go one end of front side it makes like a click noise. Any way i can get it fixed? Thanks
i align every car i do struts on. even the ones that have "no camber" adjustment that knuckle still has some movement in the strut. i have yet to see one that has no movement at the knuckle

Great video. I think having another person helping when installing the top bolts makes the job much easier.

a big THANK YOU Eric. Lots of great info especially on whether or not an alignment is required.
I put two struts on my 93 bonneville and the hardest part was lifting up them heavy struts and aligning the 3 holes in place. I needed an alignment when done. Two people make the job much easier

Eric, try holding the inner torx/allen bolt still and turning the wrench that's connected to the nut. That works.
The stabilizer link ball joints are bad with this one... such a cheap part to replace too. Eric, thanks for the video. Was a big help in replacing the struts of my 2008 DTS.
I saved $250 installing the quick struts on my 03 Buick Century. The shop that quoted me the installation, their rate was $85 an hour.
Thanks Eric great information. I will be doing my own struts.
I was really hoping Eric would say he doesn't give a crap about torque spec'ing the strut nuts... that gives me some piece of mind.
I've got a Kia Spectra with 170,000 miles and the suspension is all original, the springs and struts were never replaced. You are awesome! Keep up the good work! You are helping out a lot of people and entertaining them as well. Have a nice day. :)
I'm glad you made this video. great job!!!
Lol made me chuckle when you said "i don't go by torque spec. " i do the Same thing as you.
I'm glad I'm not the only one that turns bolts the wrong way when the bolt end is facing me.
Monroe recommends replacement every 50,000 miles I believe because their struts don't last as long as OEM or KYB.
Clearanceman2 inspecting not replacing
I have the same sway bar links but I just jack up the car and remove the wheels then jack the wheel knuckle up so that puts a load on the sway bar, then just impact it out. The slot where the links go to will act like a vice grip and lock it from rotating.

Sawzall.
Engineer: Everything has a torque specification.
Mechanic: Torque specifications are for things that can deform, and blind and/or welded nuts.

EricTheCarGuy Can you do a video on replacing wheel bearings
Anthony G he did
dude you are really strong.
An electric impact is definitely on the top of my want list. I could have saved so much time if I had one changing out nearly everything on my car. lol
Mix 50-50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone works awesome for rust
Eric i find a magnet camber level is very hand when replace that type of strut, you take a reading before you disassemble them zero it out then when you reinstall the new struts just set them to zero, you can purchase one on eBay cheap.
nice, love the video. Quick question though.. do the monroe quick strut assemblies require any priming?
Nicely detailed explanation; double like!
Thanks Eric great help I will be putting in a set of quick struts
Eric is the man

Dante’s Inferno?
Love your classical reference!
Cant beat having good tools :-)
I had pulled the struts off a Nissan that were so badly rusted when I loosened the stabilizer nut, it was so hot that the gloves I was using melted and stick to the nut. Let them cool for a couple of minutes.
Great tech video, good job.
I can understand not torquing the suspension bolts to spec, but an impact gun should not be used to put the wheel lug nuts back on.
ANYTHING is an improvement on that junk bucket LOL! Plus it's a POS Chrysler product.
That thing is a great candidate for the crusher jeesh!
Hey eric ! Usually only vise grips do the trick. Take it from someone that works in rustland
Well done... thanks

ElektronixHS No Thx i trust u on word :D
Was the 156 upper arm the one with that massive torx bolt that meant you needed to drop the top of the strut assembly down to get The bolt out?
Yup it is
This $1000 1998 Chrysler Town and Country is getting $10,000 of work done. Wow!
if your new stuts are slotted be sure to tell the alingnment guy because most stock struts are not slotted and most times the alignment guy only adjusts factory adjustments
Eric, shouldn't you wire brush the rusted bolts/nuts before spraying penetrating oil to help it soak in?
My sway bar links torque bit spot didt strip, they were in really good shape despite the rust. The problem i had was the bit breaking off inside the totque bit hole...mmmm

I just bought new struts for my '93 van.
It's not so much that they're heavy (they're just under 30 pounds each), but the weight distribution makes them a bit awkward to handle.
I replace both struts on my 2006 Honda Pilot with quick struts now I hear a creaking noise when I turn right or left . What could be the solution??
Contact Monroe for info
I am working on 2002 Siena van the top nucle is not going in the bottom one is in the nut is installed what do think have I have done wrong
Any advice or videos on replacing a torn boot over an existing strut?
you're awesome Eric
Manufacturers recommend replacing the mounting bolts.

Oops!!! Just viewed the next video where you address this very question.
how much nm are those electric impact guns and whats the batary life? is it worth getting one over an pnuematic impact gun
You can tell this is the van from your "Fixing it Forward" videos it is giving you the same trouble as before
Will you be cleaning those headlights as a part of fixing it forward?
Is it common to start on the left front wheel first? I guess many people have this preference, does it?
I wish you'd torque bolts, suspension stuff matters. I realize you haven't had a problem by not properly torquing stuff but that doesn't mean you're doing it right.

So what if the upper plate is different? Do I have to disassemble this thing and adjust it?
Thanks man!!!
black socket is the best. the two struct bolt pull with ease
My Jeep has 125k...and I don't feel any difference from new? Doesn't bounce or leaks.
Did she have to get an alignment after? Just curious. :)
where can I find some of these quick struts for a 2006 Subaru wrx sedan?
Hi Eric....Wondering why, with your new Branick compressor available, that you didn't use the original spring and save $$$? Thanks for your great videos!
john smith its a sponzored vid so the stuff is free
john smith its a sponzored vid so the stuff is free
Hi Eric. A question for ya. After installing these same kind of struts, do they have to be adjusted? Because when i installed mine and then was pushing down and letting go one end of front side it makes like a click noise. Any way i can get it fixed? Thanks
Monroe has a habit of clicking, mostly during cool weather. Check waranty info and good luck with replacement doing the same.
Pre spraying all your nuts and bolts the night before your project " if possible " will save you time and headaches.
I'm working on a car where the inner cv axle came out, how do I get it back in?
did you switch cameras or change the frame rate?
Who do you have do you alignments?
i always found it easier to have the suspension on an uneven level to get them off.. obviously for putting them on suspension has to be level.
i align every car i do struts on. even the ones that have "no camber" adjustment that knuckle still has some movement in the strut. i have yet to see one that has no movement at the knuckle
Don’t even want to attempt this just because of that sway bar end link wow
A lot of Educational Info for Free.! Do you remember before the Internet? But I would like to Know if they Work?
I replaced the struts on a 2000 Camry. They went in easy and I like the ride better than the stock ride. They are a little firmer. I do have a squeaking problem with the front struts though. Sounds like it is coming from the bearing at the top of the struts. Both sides equally. Pretty minor in summer, can't hear it with the windows down or the radio on, but louder in winter when the road salt gets up there.
White lube the strut bearing and runber part
Since struts have fluid in them, is there a specific way in which they need to be disposed of?
Tim Johnson
Tim,
Here are the steps of disposal below.
1) Underground tanks with a capacity greater than 110 gallons used to store waste oil are subject to existing U.S. EPA regulations for underground storage tanks. The regulations include leak detection, corrosion protection, and spill/overfill requirements.
2. Do not mix oil drained from scrap units with used motor oil orany other wastes.
3. If there is a spill or release of used oil to the environment, stop the release and contain the oil. Clean up and manage oilspill residues properly.
4. Used oil must be transported by a licensed waste oil haulerto a reputable oil recycler. The waste oil hauler and the oilrecycler must each have a U.S. EPA identification number.
5. To find a used oil recycler in your area, contact the NationalOil Recyclers Association. To check the status of your statesused oil program, contact your state’s used oil program office.

jonathan doyle They have a choice. Eric has just chosen to sell out, nobody is forcing him to make these ads.

Did Chrysler just plain miss a big ole spot with the undercoating there?
Why not cover the + battery terminal with a thick cloth ? It's not a trick question...
I replaced my rear 2 struts and now the car is MORE rougher/harsher than before. WHY?
Did you use quick struts or are you still using your original OE springs?
@@StilettoSniper I used the quick struts
Wow 7 years ago.....just wanted to mention not all struts are left and right. My Aztek both sides are the same part number so no left and right.
"Driver's side, in the US, is LEFT btw".... THANK YOU
can you use a cam bolt with a slotted strut
Would have been usful a day or two ago just done lowering springs on my car oh well haha
Are these monroe struts made in America??
The ones I bought in October, 2017 for a Dodge said "Assembled in USA".
I just use a vice grips on the back.
