  • Point decoders from DCC Concepts and Gaugemaster compared, what do they do? How do they work? Which one is better? Which one should you buy?

Based on your review, and the reviews of others, I have decided to use DCC Concepts for my layout, in combination with the ESU Ecos controller. Thanks for a great explanation of the point switching unit.

Thank you! It really is one of the best point decoders out there, and their customer service is outstanding

Finnaly back in stock after nearly 2 years! Thanks for the review and owning one myself, I completely agree with u. Need at least another 7 or 8 for my layout so best snap them up soon whilst they are about

I need another 4 way and that’s all my points motorised, can’t quite believe how easy they are to set up

@@chrisderby986 when I first got it, I was looking for more to set it up lol I also sure it wasn't that simple lol but it actually was. Brilliant units I just hope they stay in stock now lol

I have 5 of these in use. The one warning is that it is very easy not to get every strand of the wire into the terminals and if you have a whisker that touches anything else you can have problems. You have to make sure that the power is off and the CDU completely discharged. I have managed to blow a couple of channels without really knowing how - I do not think the protection on the various inputs and outputs is as good as it could be.
However I do like the ability to have frog outputs - normally used the PM-1 with built in switch but on a double junction the frog outputs really helped. Also having connections for switches and LEDs is good.
After my problems, I am now tinning the wires before terminating them to prevent whiskers and make it easier to get the wires in.

I’ve not had any issue with the wires, but I do know what you mean.

Agreed. I inadvertently caused a blow on one of the banks. They should have built-in more in the way of circuit protection. It's far too sensitive. However, still a very good unit for solonoids.

I spot a lovely Robinson A5 amongst other nice locos! May I ask where you got your hands on that one? Joachim

Well spotted! It’s a kit built A5, got it from the last Vectis auction. It cost a pretty penny too!

Hi great video. I have just started rebuilding my OO layout and would like to go down this road. My controller is the same as yours so need to find out how to link the point motors to it.
Up till now I've used gauge master P1 with the built in switch and Peco electrofrog points so will these work with this module. Before i just wired them to a switch via a CDU and as long as the points were central they worked great.
I am new to the advanced electronics side of DCC but at 74 I want to make things easer for my self so any advice would be great.
    Chris

It’s really easy to set up DCC point control, you don’t have to do anything to set them up with the controller. I used mostly DCC Concepts solenoid point motor decoders, they couldn’t be any easier to set up. With pretty much all point decoders you have to set them up one at a time, you stick the decoder into set up mode(or whatever set up situation the manufacturer states), assign the number on the co troller as you would if you were changing the point, and end set up mode. That’s pretty much it.
