      Thanks so much Jeff! This whole thing was a concept that was sparked by a good friend a couple years back. Glad to be out here making new friends in the world too!

    good Job Derek. Awesome trip. The naptha lanterns and stoves are my favorite. love the sound and light / heat they give.
    In one of your earlier videos you mentioned looking for a different wood stove. Hope you fine a nice air tight to heat your tent.
    Can you get block heater or inline rad heater for your 2 stroke sled? You have the little genny there. Would let them start way easier.
    Oh did that ol bowtie left you sledding home? You should upgrade to a blue oval. She would have started for ya. LOL

      Thanks Brother! I wasn’t as afraid with the generator on location, but it was NOT a happy camper in those temps.
      I got the bow tie going with a boost - but I won’t admit the symbol on the front of the boosting vehicle. Haha.

      @@SubArcticAdventures HAHA Love it ;) that little Genny would thaw out your bowtie too. We used to have 2 of those little guys with the aircraft to warm the engines when remote up north.

    Great video uncle d... Try cotton balls with vasoline with the flint stick. A little liquid boyscout works too lol .... Keep up the great work! Loving the channel.

      I've seen the cotton ball trick before, and I like that. There are a few out there that I may play around with in time. Maybe I'll wait for your northern trip to come hang out! //d

    Was definitely entertaining and fun to watch. I think you had A LOT of good luck on that camping trip…… especially getting the sled started to go home. I’d be upgrading that pull cord to Kevlar lol
    If you do decide to get one of the naphtha stoves or lantern DO NOT EVER light/start or even refuel inside the tent. The fuel tanks have to be pumped with a plunger by hand to pressurize the fuel tank and if not careful when closing the closing fuel will spray out. Many tents have been burned down this way in the Canadian army and people have been nearly burned to death.
    You must have to use a gasoline antifreeze in the sled and generator at those temps?
    Are there any regulations that prevent you from having a second Woodstove for heat on those extra cold nights?

    • @SubArcticAdventures
      @SubArcticAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you were entertained by it. It's all you guys that helps me get out there and have fun doing it! The other Coleman devices may be a next year investment - we'll see.
      I wouldn't think there would be regulations against a second stove. Something I never thought of, but I like your style! lol

    • @BigRigNewf
      @BigRigNewf ปีที่แล้ว

      What made me think of another stove was thinking about a family member that lived in a 100yr old farm house in NL and they needed 3 full size (comfort valley 12hr burning) wood stoves to keep it comfortable on cold windy days.
      I bet that Ecofan helped a little bit to move the heat around….. we use one on our woodstove in the house. If it’s the Canadian made one I’m pretty sure it has a lifetime warranty

    I make wax firestarters that get my stove going every time without kindling, they burn for about 15 mins. Those magnesium starters can work but as you noted probably not best in emergencies

    • @SubArcticAdventures
      @SubArcticAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve seen a few different things out there.. even waxed dryer lint. I wouldn’t mind giving things a try along the way. Do you show your fire starters in a particular episode on your channel?

  • @dunk22
    @dunk22 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Hands down, the best firestarter is cotton balls half dipped in vaseline, takes the first spark every time and long lasting. I always carry some in pill bottles. Life savers. Got that tip from an Eskimo 40 years ago

    Good to see you Derek! Enjoyed the video very much! Tough conditions to film in for sure. Quite the workout starting your sled but at least she fired up! Speaking of fire, still have plans to switch that wood stove out? I think that is key to increase your comfort level on those brutally cold nights. I kind of like the name monologue corner! Should get one of those wood burnt signs and hang it there for fun!
    Take care and see you next time!

      @SubArcticAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Terry! I was actually thinking the exact same thing about the wooden sign when I said that outloud! Too funny! We'll see about the wood stove. Never know what life throws at you these days!

    Derek, I agree with you about those serving sizes on various things. I reckon half the time when it says one serve it’s probably for a very small pygmy. 😊. That fire sounds interesting how it backdrafts a lot. Do you think the fire gets enough fresh air coming in through gaps in the tent so there’s enough oxygen there? I see on one of your more recent videos You’ve changed over to new fireplace/stove.

    • @SubArcticAdventures
      @SubArcticAdventures  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks Duncan! The fresh air is definitely something on the list to troubleshoot and monitor. This particular night, I hadn’t opened the front door in a while. That said, even after I had the door flaps open for a while to air out the smoke, it was still causing the same issue. I’ve got a list to work through from the least invasive to replacing the pipes with different angles. Stay tuned 😉

    • @duncanm6589
      @duncanm6589 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ I think a couple of 45 degree angles would help a lot.

    The problem with your stove is... you need you're stove pipe to go straight up through the roof. 😊

      1000% The next tent will have a roof vent, for sure!
