... and today is the birthday of drummer Miki "Mittan" Tsunoda Btw - happy birthday Mittan! You can see her play as a guest with Nemophila when they covered Show-Ya's "Fairy (Nemophila's drummer Tamu was just out of maternity and not ready to play the drums yet, so she played ... keys).

Fairy is my favourite Nemophila cover. About 2 years ago Show-Ya & Nemo did a joint concert and at the end both bands were on-stage performing Fairy together. 3 guitars, 2 basses, 2 drum-sets, 2 vocalists and 1 keyboard was an epic live stream performance.

They have over 40 years of playing live and making albums behind them. They organize and produce the all-female Rock festival Naon no Yaon in Tokyo every year, which they founded in 1987. Only female Metal and Rock bands are on stage but the audience is open to everyone. BTW, they have covered some classic Rock and Metal songs. Great choice of song to cheer up this stormy Welsh morning.

The group my husband fell in love with in the 90's and they were one of the first all female bands to kick down the doors and allowed all the great female bands to follow from Mary's Blood, Destrose, etc.. They are the grand dames who blazed the way for everyone else to follow. Notice the 80's hairstyles that tell you this was well before 2K!!!!!

Miki 'Sun-Go' Igarashi is considered possibly Japan's first female shredder. She and Saki are very close and call each other mother and daughter even though there is no family connection. Keiko Terada did some shows with Gacharic Spin where they performed under the name Teradic Spin. If you get to see any videos where Angie gets to perform with Keiko she always seems so happy.

Glad you got to this. There is a better, live version of this (see below). But it's great you checked this out.
The godmother of metal bands, Show-Ya were founded in 1981 (before Metallica). They locked in their lineup in 1982 and are still touring with that lineup (there were a few years in the mid 90's with a different lead singer). They have been sponsoring an annual rock festival (NAONのYAON) just for Japanese female rock musicians, and mentored many of the bands you are seeing now.
They were in part inspired by the Runaways, the first all-woman hard rock band that made a commercial impact in the West. The Runaways toured Japan in 1977, generating Beatlemania-like excitement and encouraging a generation of girls and women to believe they could be rock stars. Show-Ya may have been inspired by the Runaways, but they modeled themselves after Deep Purple, whose tours in the early 70s probably had more of an impact on Japanese rock than any other band. Show-Ya’s early work was mostly covers of top Western bands like Purple, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, etc. Then they began releasing and performing their own stuff, and never looked back.
    Miki Nakamura (keyboard) 9/27/1961
    Miki Igarashi (guitar) 11/21/1962
    Keiko Terada (vocal) 7/27/1963
    Satomi Senba (bass) 8/28/1963
    Miki Tsunoda (drums) 12/7/1963
Here is their 2005 (24th anniversary!) concert performance of the biggest hit from their 1989 album "Outerlimits", the appropriately named "I Am the Storm" th-cam.com/video/oJ_5Gv3vFjQ/w-d-xo.html You'll hear a heavy Deep Purple vibe. It is a bold song for the times-she is essentially daring a man to have the courage to be involved romantically with her. As you watch these women rock, keep in mind that they are in their mid-40s.
I consider them one of the most underrated rock bands ever. The fact that they were not bigger in the U.S. is an indictment of the U.S. music establishment, which repeatedly turned down opportunities to promote them here. We were stuck listening to Kansas, Foreigner and Bob Seger while a band like Show-Ya was out there? Shame on us.
Some of the better Show-Ya clips available on youtube:
“Still be Hanging On” (live in L.A., 1988, their first US appearance) written by Rick Neilsen of Cheap Trick but never released, Show-Ya made it their own: th-cam.com/video/ZyNI9TSZv8c/w-d-xo.html
私は嵐 “Watashi Wa Arashi” (“I Am the Storm”) 2005 live concert th-cam.com/video/oJ_5Gv3vFjQ/w-d-xo.html Their biggest hit from the 1989 album Outerlimits
“Cry for Freedom” (2008 NAONのYAON) th-cam.com/video/pS-SdwC-bHE/w-d-xo.html
Classic power ballad, with a heart-stopping slow burn solo.
“One Way Heart” (mid 2010’s) th-cam.com/video/-KCATewd2zM/w-d-xo.html Straight-up rocker; Sun-Go tears it up on lead.

Miki "Sun Go" Igarashi, the veteran guitarrist from SHOW-YA, is considered by today female guitarrist as a SENSEI and "Mother" of them all. Young guitarrist as SAKI exNemophila/exMary's Blood, Yuri from Cynthia, Yashiro and many more always talk great about Sensei Igarashi-san and mention her as their inspiration to become a guitarrist. It is known also that this younger guitarrist sometimes ask Igarashi-san for her advice on some guitar riffs or melodies.

It doesn't "look like 80s hair metal" ... IT IS 80s hair metal 😉. This dates from 1989 and Show-Ya was around since 1981 - even if their career really started in 83. This is from their best album "Outerlimits" - not a single filler song on it! And guess what: they are still together! Same line up! (there's been an hiatus between 1998 and 2005). They are true legends and this song has been covered by many bands in Japan.
Also very important: they created the all-female festival "Naon@Yaon" where they invite the young and the older musicians to play together - nearly every band from the young generation has played Naon!
Trivia: as there were three "miki" in the band, they decided to use nicknames: "Sun-Go" for guitarist Miki Igarashi, "Mittan" for drummer Miki Tsunoda and "Captain" for keyboardist Miki Nakamura.

The thing I like about Sun Go is she plays a heavy guitar. She makes it sound like there are two guitars instead of one. I wish I had known about them in the 1980's back in Australia. Funny that you said the singer didn't look Japanese. I think it was mostly the hair. In this video it is the original Japanese vocalist Keiko Terada. But she left and was replaced ('91-'96) by the half-Japanese Steffanie Borges, the daughter of Hawaiian jazz singer Jimmy Borges and Japanese dancer Shizuko Yagi. She grew up in Hawaii. Show-ya stopped in 1998 and but came back in 2005 with Terada as lead singer again. Around this time Destroya (2005) formed. Destroya renamed as Destrose in 2007. And Aldious came along in 2008. So Show-ya came back at the beginning of the boom in all-female Japanese metal/rock bands. Nemophila has done two covers of Show-ya songs with the Show-ya drummer Tsunoda Miki as the guest drummer. Their regular drummer Tamu was out on pregnancy leave. Saki and Hazuki, the guitarists of Nemophila, joined Show-ya in their cover of X-Japan's Kurenai. An epic song with three epic guitarists: th-cam.com/video/xGX41dvVisA/w-d-xo.html

    The vocalist is KEIKO TERADA.
KEIKO was born in 1963 and is now 61 years old, but still retains her good looks. That is, she looks like she is in her 40s.

Show Ya's cover of the classic Kurenai (X Japan) is one of the best interpretations I've ever seen. I suggest a reaction. Keiko Terada and Show Ya are recognized by many other metalheads, as are Loudness and Ningen Isu. Show Ya and, especially, vocalist Keiko Terada, created the Naon No Yaon festival (1987), which holds a jam session for female musicians from metal bands in Japan. Musicians from bands like Band Maid and Nemophila play at this festival and consider Keiko Terada to be the great influence on all of them. The OG girl group that broke the glass ceiling formed in 1981 ... Keiko Terada (61) is still active and organizes the Naon No Yaon festival every year that showcases some of the best female Japanese musicians in the country. Fun fact: her rose tattoo is not real.

The vids from these Naon shows is available and highly recommended viewing. The venue that the event is generally held at is an impressive out door experience. This and Mari Harmada,etc... were Fire.

This is exactly the song they used when they debuted in the 80s.
And Princess Princess, who debuted around the same time,
I wrote POP ROCK in the comment, but there are some hard songs as well.
    プリンセス プリンセス 『GO AWAY BOY』
プリンセス プリンセス 『19 GROWING UP -ode to my buddy-』
    プリンセス プリンセス - GET CRAZY!
    There are also rock'n'roll songs.
    Please listen!

The vocalist, Terada Keiko, was born in 1963.
It's the 80's as you say.
The girls are still active today.

Ah yes, Show Ya! Now, it’s fair to say they were original all-female Japanese rock, but their relevance to Aldious and Destrose was as inspiration and promotion rather than starting the sound or igniting the current interest. They are from quarter of a century before Aldious or Destrose. They sponsor an annual female music promotional concert “Naon no Yaon” and have showcased pretty much all the big names, some of whom refer to them as their “mothers”, which has caused some confusion, because Keiko is not Saki’s mom. lol So I’d say, by their own words and deeds, that Show Ya! are the mothers of the OGs of all female Japanese rock and metal. I wish I’d known about them when I was a Maiden and Motörhead fan, you know, the grandfathers of modern metal. 😜
If you want a treat, Saki of Cyntia (another OG band) did a cover of Show Ya’s “Genkai Lovers” - it’s a total work of art. Her voice and that song make magic.

sun-go is an awesome guitarist and definitely is influential to the newer generation of Japanese players, Show-Ya and their contemporaries Princess Princess both have influenced todays all female rock groups and both are worth a deep dive , a lot of great music. In fact Princess Princess is in my top five favorite J rock/metal bands and one of my favorite bands ever, thanks to Nemophila covers I found these bands! Here’s a link to Princess Princess live( show ya live in late 80s I highly recommend too) th-cam.com/video/0djqx9Ns1UA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=PypAn61XKkvz2TMk

    WOW
In the 1980s, Japanese Girls Heavy Metal called SHOW-YA was born, and what I want you to believe is that the members are still active today 🎸♫
Even in his 60th birthday, many stars such as NEMOPHILA, LOVEBITS, Aldious, BRAIDRE, etc. are rampaging somewhere on the planet.
In addition to this song, SHOW-YA also has songs such as Genkai LOVERS and FAIRY ♫ (There is also a TH-cam video)
Newcomers include HAGANE and EAST OF EDEN♫
Personally, I don't think of BABY MTAL as a girls band!
By the way, BAND MIDE is far below Aldious and LOVEBITS, let alone NEMOPHILA!
I'm so happy that you both came to see Japan's HEAVY METAL 🎸♫
Please continue to enjoy streaming reaction videos 🙏 I'm looking forward to it 🇯🇵♫

Thee early pioneer of all female Japanese band. Reminds me Loudness and the 80's American hairspray metal. The person that came up the description "hair" metal must have thought all the other bands back than were bald. They all f*cking had hair. SMH.

If you're interested in something cool from Show-Ya I'd recommend this video which brings together the origins of Japanese female rock and the present of JFR whilst throwing in an iconic song from Japanese rock into the bargain . Show-Ya with Hazuki and Saki from Nemophila ( at the time ) doing a cover of X-Japan's " Kurenai " - th-cam.com/video/xGX41dvVisA/w-d-xo.html ( It's all the more remarkable when you consider that the members of Show-Ya were all 60+ years old when this was recorded ! )
    ENJOY !
