Caught 10 reds yesterday. Kept one 27 incher with this lure. It’s literally become my favorite and almost only lure I use. Trout and red fish every week under any weather condition.
He was a welder (metalolgist) from Chicago that designed the spoon using two types of metal with the densor metal being welded in the center so the minnow would wobble without flipping! Unless its being reeled to fast! The older silver minnows with cardboard boxes the were made on Wells street in Chicago are still the best! Just need to be replated some of them! But even if isn't all chromed out? With a light plastic tail or contrasting tube with a small stinger hook inside they can be worked through just about any environment, shell, timber, weeds! They most deadly when using a flutter retrieve especially in deep cuts on a slack tide! Letting the Silver Minnow fall to the bottom and then ripping it up only to flutter down! They look a like dying shad! Great bait for the bays or bayous! It still amazes me how fishing lures designed in the "20's" are still productive! But? are for the most part no longer used because of fallen out favor! Good thing fish don't watch TV to know what lure is new goto bait! A Silver Minnow & Heddon Spook, Rebel Jump'in Minnow will still slay fish not because of a finished or color! But because of it's motion in the water! A fluttering or a zig zag motion still make fish think! Dying bait easy meal! You can't put a patient on instinct!
The Problem with Them is Quality control. Pick several up and look at how some " NIT BRAIN", Really Globbed on the Solder, or couldn't solder the hook , centered and straight. Thats probably why the older ones were more productive, because they were near perfect balanced. BUT, Johnson Silver is really nothing innovative , unique. Lou Eppinger, had this 35 degree or so rocking, without broaching and turning over, figured out. But yes, they do work well. I darken one edge, like a " CLEO" Spoon , so you get a contrast, silhouette, when they rock sise to side.
i am an avid spoon fisherman, as one lives on my favorite rod and reel fishing out of homosassa constantly for the past 7 years - i know success has a lot to do with confidence - i cut up a 1/4 inch thick piece of gulp and thread it on the hook - it doesn't change the cast distance much, but i think it generates more 'second-strikes' on misses - an old fisherman trick;)
They were popular in Michigan back in the 60's. I had a hard time hooking bass and pike with them. They worked great for luring fish into our spearing hole in winter. The old red and white Dardevle was superior.
Dale that because the Knot Heads solder on a lousy , poor Quality hook. To make matters worse, they Silver Plate, Gold Plate the hook, affecting the point of hook. You can take a quality hook, grind cut off some of the lousy factory hook , and silver solder it the the partial stub of the original disastrous factory hook. Yo can match the angle you need . I've tried sharpening the cave man barbaric hook , with not great results.
I've had zero issues putting a razor-sharp point on these hooks. The hooks are cheap but anyone who's even halfway decent at sharpening won't have any problem. I take about half a minute per hook to sharpen them when new. Don't use a hook-sharpening stone. Use a fine file. Another quality-control issue is the "aiming point" of the hook. On a lot of these lures, the hook point aims "inboard" of the line connection. In that case, the hook needs to be bent so that it aims directly at the line connection or even slightly outside that location. With a sharpened hook and with the hook re-shaped in that way if necessary, the hookup ratio is very close to 100 percent. Also in regard to the hook-quality issue, the hook on the weedless Daredevil bends very easily, and I've lose a few big pike because of that. Also, the very tip of the point on a weedless Daredevil sometimes gets bent sideways, rendering the hook useless. The hook on a Silver Minnow is cheap but I've never had one deform in either of those two those ways, so to me it is "good enough".
Tried one at the beach Sunday...the thing flew like an airplane! 🙂 Further than I thought, but also appeared to be "held up" in the air and caused some wind knots. I'll give it a try again when less windy and bit dirtier water.
I was wondering about spoons. I know down here in the south gold is a color you can't go wrong. However, in regards to silver spoons, how does it fair against gold & is it based on water clarity & what you're targeting?

Trout love them too. I’ve caught red ad Trout literally every week since I’ve been using. I simply tie a loop knot and go to work. Braid on fluoro, I don’t do anything extra that I’ve read in these comments and let me tell you, the thing works like a champ here in north Florida.

Don't know about salt water but for my local pike, I use gold in stained or dirty water or heavy overcast. Silver in clear water with little cloud cover. Try finding areas with definite mud lines from suspended silt. Cast along the transition from dirty to clear. Fresh or salt, it's always a good bet.
I believe Louis Johnson, simply looked at Eppingers Spoon ,that rocks side to side and made his own version with a soldered Weedles hook. I'm sure he was given the Patent, because it was shaped differently and had soldered hook. They do work... BUT, Have you noticed how sloppy they are with soldering the hook to spoons. Not centered nicely or excessive glob of solder. Quality control is Lousy in that respect. Looks like they had First Graders do the soldering. I had pick them myself.

Sounds like you had an amazing day!
I ordered 2 of these lures, and I will get them tomorrow.

So true... Great producer in salt or fresh water!
🔥🔥
A Johnson Sprite is a staple here on the gulf coast in Texas-Adding a small split ring and swivel will help with line twist on any spoon.
Sure is!

Great tip Pat!!! I love them to catch barracuda when reeling fast
Awesome! 🔥
Great information on this spoon. Thanks, Pat. Thanks, Salt Strong

Hi. Great video. How do you sharpen the hook? Thanks

Ok next purchase for the tackle box
Awesome! 💪
Do you put weight on it?
I wish they still made the Jonny o Neil weedless wonder.
Aloha, like them with the pink bead.

@@Saltstrong Ha...I do not even remember this!🤣🤣
Can i ask if you can use it for bassfishing as well?
I’ve caught plenty of bass over the years with one.
I keep 3 of them on me at all times. The wobble kills.
We agree Aaron! Crushing it!

Those come in different sizes any particular size ? Good video Pat 🎣
The 1/4 oz Gold is the standard size and color. Snook and reds love them.

Any and every size works. Hell ive used them all under every weather condition. If you aren’t getting bites than the fish simply aren’t feeding.
What is best way to work them I've never caught anything on a spoon
Let it sink then reel
