SOLUTION: For me (2017 VW Golf) go to plsy store. Uninstall updates. Go to Apps on phone. Android Auto. Force stop. Storage. Delete cache. Delete data. Reboot phone. Simply restart by attaching to car. Works for me. Good luck.

My android auto has been weird lately.. Spotify is greyed out and wont let me use it anymore. I cant even toggle through songs, I have to pick up my phone and physically skip or change playlists. I have been using youtube music in the meantime because its been giving me no issues
