Most of Javanese people are like her. When we said Javanese mean Central Java, East Java and Yogyakarta. West Java is Sundanese culture not Javanese even the name itself is West Java but totally not Java Culture it is called Sunda.
I come from a small european village, we also used to cook with chicken head and chicken feet. My mother especially loves the head, with the brain. Of course it's cooked very differently there. Since I moved to Singapore, many people are surprised to learn I eat chicken head and feet 😅. The dishes in the video looked delicious too, I love Asian food, especially Indonesian, so I hope one day I'll have the chance to visit Yogya and try them. Maybe even bring my mother, she would be very excited to try the chicken head 😂.
Oh this video makes me feeling homesick! Kali Code was once a slum, but now Kali Code remains a quintessential kampong in Kota Yogyakarta. I ever joined a walking tour to stroll around Kali Code yet had so much fun & gained respect to its inhabitants. The legacy of Romo Mangun can be seen here. I hope warga kampung (the kampong inhabitants) always be resilient through the passing time.
Everytime mentioning xcode, it's only right Romo Mangun's name is mentioned in the same breath. Xcode younger generation never met him but always remember him.
as an Indonesian diaspora who used to live in Jogja for awhile, I miss the atmosphere of the city all the time. The people, jajan pasar, late nights at burjo’s & angkringan’s.. Jogja feels like a 2nd home to me ☺️ now I really want to take my partner for a long walk along Kali Code for his first visit to Jogja & end the day at an angkringan, hopefully soon!

7:40 what a great community spirit! Unlike in Singapore, residents asking for a patch of land in front of HDB blocks. It eventually then only be managed by 1 resident because of the clash and disagreement, someone stole the fruit or chili, or whatnot. Then they started to fence it out, no one can come in.
serius sampe segitunya? ya mungkin krn yg sibuk menanam dan merawat hanya 1 tentu akan jengkel jika pada main ambil tapi kalo diambil dr positifnya ya malah bikin warga yg lain utk gabung berkebun kan krn kalo di indonesia ketika ada warga yg berbagi malah akhirnya seluruh kampung jadi mencontoh juga btw selebar apa sih tanah kebun yg diributkan?

surprisingly the slum isn't chaotic like the other, it's relatively neat and clean. The food are great also, it's like side road cafe and at the night usually people gather to enjoy the food.
That the legacy of romo mangun. He was Katholik pastor, who lived there to change people's habit. His philosophy was "jadikan kali sebagai halaman depan rumah".
I know right? When I see tons of well-baked donuts going into the trash I'd hear my heart break. They should've just wrap them in plastic bags and let people take it for free or something.

I used to live in Jogja for 6 years. My favorite dish in angkringan always chicken head and quail eggs satay. Kinda missed it when I had to leave this city.
Remind me of Sanji, chef character from comic One Piece. He is strong fighter and excellent chef. He could turn wasted ingridient into delicious cuisine. Well, in Indonesia, we are kinda related to Sanji lol 😁
I'm from east borneo, and i very surprise that Yogyakarta has very cheap economical needs, like you can survive a whole day with only 1usd (around Rp15000) , but here at my place you need 5usd tho.
This is what make us Javanese & Indonesian difference with other "underrated" cooks of unused source, we proceed that "unused" source of food with art & dignity
It's almost a year since I came to Yogyakarta (to study for a bachelor's degree). Yet, it is still kind of shocking for me how easily you can find chicken heads (as food) here. Kind of a new cultural experience I guess haha 😀
Im Indonesian and having no trouble eating chicken head or feet as long as not too many since it is said that the growth hormone is injected around the neck. Usually we also cut the beak and nails from the feet before cooking it.
To be very honest, instead of the actual meat, I prefer more "unusual" parts of chicken like chicken feet, innards, neck (esp the thick skin). Less healthy, but much more delicious. LOL ...
too many delicious food we can find in Jogjakarta 😋, but one i miss is a really really good siomay right side galeria mall when I was at college, 2000 something, where da hell are they now. intense fish taste, right dough concistency, on magical peanut sauce, .... bu Wiwik's soup, marhaen's presure cooked chicken, i feel hungry now
Most delicious parts of chicken are technically the head, skin, chicken's butt (yeah, we do eat chicken's butt here, it's called tungir or brutu 🤣), chicken feet, intestine, heart and gizzard. We eat those not because we can't buy the meat, but those are delicious and tasty 😌
They might be not rich, but they seem to be grateful for what they have. That's why they are happy. I lived in Jogja for more than 6 years and have loved every corner of it.

yeah, for local (Javanese) its just a normal food, like panipuri for Indian is just normal snack 😁. Term "slum food" is not always dirty, its just mostly found in slum or poor area.
kangen nongkrong dekat kali code. btw, it should be nasi kucing (cat rice or cat's rice - small portion of rice with toppings) not kuching. because kuching is place, not quite right to describe the dish.
