Carmy's monologue at the beginning of the Season 1 finale is a masterclass in character development. Jeremy Allen White shows Carmy at his most vulnerable and broken, a man whose self-loathing won't allow him to have anything good in his life which is perfectly represented in his relationship with Claire in Season 2. This show is my favorite out right now.
Omg im so glad you said that, as a recovering addict who have lost friends that were like brothers to me i cried through the whole scene his acting full that full shot with co cuts was amazing and it was top tier acting ❤
What i love about this show is how realistic the interactions and conversations are, and I feel that Jeremy Allen White perfected the realism in his performance.
@karinalumen9722 I can understand this, when everyone was saying this show was anxiety inducing and started watching and never felt that way I confirmed that before therapy I was having so major issues still the show doesn't trigger me a lot but Carmy's decisions or mistakes convos etc seemed the most realistic to my life and work environments
I'm became so incredibly aware of how much I was anxiously fidgeting when you pointed that out about Carmy. Very different personality than that character but I relate so much to his internal chaos - so it struck me as particularly fitting when Jamie Lee Curtis played Carmy's mom and it reminded me of my late mother on her worst days. Such an amazing show.
@@irotinmyskin I really wasn't a fan of that character, and didn't think he was charming or funny. And in one episode I completely changed and now I can hardly watch him without crying

I really appreciate how you title the scenes you lift from shows and movies in the bottom left corner of the screen EVERY TIME. It would be easy to do it some of the time, or for scenes from media not associated with the title of your video, but the fact that you do it all the time, for every scene and shot is very professional, and gives your content a shared brand or style. And it’s nice. It works. Thanks for another great video!
As a person who comes from a long line of restaurant owners, chefs, waiters... I can't watch the show because it is so painfull to watch. It's too true . 😢😢😢 I can't even go to a restaurant anymore because of the PTsD from it . restaurants are 24 hr problems. This actor is so good as 🎉🎉🎉Chef.
Oh my god, I can’t portray to you how obsessed I am with this video!! The way you talk about his perpetual movement feels so spot on to how I view him, and the way you connect blinking to his trauma is so interesting. While he panics and snaps at people when his work is involved, he’s not expected to fix his family, so more often than not, he builds distance from them in whatever way he can. I never realized how often he uses closing his eyes as a way to do this. Anyway, really cool video! Thanks for making it
I worked in the back and front of restaurants. After 20 years of it all I realized I was only serving food not saving lives. Nothing is worth that much misery and stress.
Amen to that. I've been bartending for about 2 years in 2 different establishments, and before that i worked as a waiter for a year. It made me hate alcohol and drunk people, so i stopped drinking almost completely, it made me even more reluctant to make new acquaintances than before. It was extremely stressful at times, and the pay was never good enough for amount of stress i've been receiving. Wasn't worth it, but it was a valuable experience at least, a lot like the service in the army, both made me realize a lot of things about myself and acquire social skills i lacked.
I love this show for capturing what its actually like to work in a restaurant and showing people what these workers often desl with. I hope sone people learned to show More respect to restaurant workers from watching it because far too many people take them for granted and assume its an easy job
Thanks for the vid! ❤ Carmy hardly makes eye contact, but stares at Syd when she cooks because he wants that joy she has in her craft, stares at Claire because he wants to escape outside of himself, and stares at Richie when arguing with him because he is jealous of Richie’s relationship he had with Carmy’s late brother. I want to see my boy move past these things as the show progresses.
If you guys like The Bear I highly recommend reading The Dishwasher by Stephane Larue (especially if you remember what it was like living in Quebec in the late 90’s/early 2000’s and/or are a gambling addict lol). I’m only halfway through the book but it manages to capture the grimy ordered chaos of the kitchen as accurately as this show does, just in literary form. I only worked food service for a year and I could feel my blood pressure rising in some chapters.
was headchef at a mid place for 3 years. when you care about every single plate that leaves the kitchen; that each one is always perfect, you've set yourself up for a very toxic relationship with your work. when you complement a chef for how good the plate was, the chef hears 'blah blah, none what im saying matters, because i know youre in your own head worried about the next plate, or you're in your own head thinking about the last one blah blah" there's a certain irony to it. you hear about "thankless" jobs. and i can assure you that hearing praise means nothing to a person who's attention is with the finest of details and the splitting and counting of seconds. A restaurant is something to work at or own, not run. If you do both, you'll burn through yourself in a hurry
@@uneducatedandopinionated8936 absolutely. Thanks for summing it up. I used to love the challenge, stepping out of my comfort zone and so forth. But it had a cost I didn't realize. Exactly what you said. I got a kick out of the film, The Menu, where Ralph Fiennes' character, seen as the world's greatest chef, takes no pleasure in creating original masterpieces or getting praise for them. He resents everyone and everything involved in the culinary world. The only time he enjoys cooking anymore is when he's making something so simple as a cheeseburger.
@@merrycaviller8145 it's good that you realized the imbalance before it took too much of an effect. The Menu actually made me more jaded after watching it. After some time to ruminate I've found cooking for the people I love is much more satisfying than cooking for competition

thank you , excellent video! since i watch the bear i've waited for your observations. this is sooo on point. btw, will there be a severance video on future? :)
I think just because of similar both Shameless and The Bear in premise and tone, a lot of people compare the likes of Jeremy Allen White character side by side. With similarities like them being low income, having smoking habits, being from a dysfunctional families, and having an unremovable skills that goes beyond what others perceive of them... But the characters differences are much louder and so what Jeremy does with his approach. Like Lip Gallaher is someone who is very smart both book wise and street wise, but lacks emotional awareness with anybody outside of his family. He's smart he is the lacks the drive, and direction to go further. He's not fidgety or awkward he just goes for it with a lack of thought. And, with his family he alongside his sister are emotionally stunted from being the parents that their parents never were. So White's approach is more calm, yet cocky, with a charming demeanor you have to admire but something that is really a cover up to deeper issues. On the other hand, Carmen never squanders an opportunity, while doesn't have Lip's intelligence. He has both emotional intelligence and awareness that doesn't make the chip on his shoulder as noticeable. He doesn't necessarily have the charisma that Lip does, but Carmen's determination and passion is so admirable that people come to him even if he pushes them away. With Jeremy Allen White's interruption making Carmen so dedicated, bold, and admirable that you will follow even if harms his life. But is someone is trying to continue to grow with the people around him. That's why I think Jeremy Allen White's performance tops Shameless, but just the show tops Shameless in all fronts.
I work in a restaurant. The work environment (I.e: coworkers and management) are okay, that’s one of the reasons why I stay (as well as the fact that there are very few options), but I hate the job, especially in the summer season. The job itself may be easy in the fact that what you have to do requires little to no skill, but having to deal with such a huge influx of customers with almost no downtime is exhausting, and the fact that I hate the job itself doesn’t help. I’ve had multiple anxiety attacks last year. Alas, this job gives me a purpose nonetheless. I have to suck it up.
Food service is like playing Jazz. Except the best players and the best servers and chefs have no idea how to manage their emotions. I think this is true because of how difficult it is to be truly subsumed into your work, as both require, and to roll with the changes and still keep your rhythm. That mindset doesn't easily lend itself to being able to step back. My psychologist and therapist are always talking about standing back from my emotions and from how they affect me and I get what they mean on the surface, but I can't apply it. I can't step back. I have spent my whole life stepping up.
Saying The Bear is a show about a chef is like saying The Sopranos is about a mob boss. These shows are magnificent, beautiful works of art because they are character studies.
I think they're both great. I just rewatched call me by your name and timothee is incredible in that movie. He plays earnest and longing so well. Both of his Luca films have been my favorites.
