  • Welcome to the beautiful village of Baddeck in Cape Breton Nova Scotia. This is one of the best places to visit in the entire province.
    We start off on the waterfront enjoying views of the Bras d'or Lakes and many sail boats. This area is a very popular hot spot in the village and it did not disappoint. From here we learned more about Alexander Graham Bell and all his inventions before making our way up to the main part of the village.
    The village itself is full of local cafes, restaurants and boutiques. This is one of the main reasons this 'town' is so popular with tourists. From there we made our way to Big Spruce Brewery for some Craft Beer. This spot is a must visit as the beer is superb and the views of the lake are out of this world.
    We eventually start unboxing some tiny house deliveries as we're started to plan out the interior design of our future home.
    ABOUT BADDECK
    Baddeck is a village in Victoria County, Nova Scotia, Canada. This village is seventy-eight kilometres west of Sydney. It is Victoria County's shire town and is situated on the northern shore of Bras d'Or Lake on Cape Breton Island.
    ABOUT CAPE BRETON
    Cape Breton Island is at the eastern end of the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. Its Cabot Trail is a roadway encircling the island, passing forests and rugged coastline. The drive skirts Cape Breton Highlands National Park, whose Skyline Trail footpath overlooks the Gulf of St. Lawrence, known for migratory whales. The town of Sydney honours local music with the Big Fiddle, a giant violin statue on the waterfront.

The design of the Silver Dart was led by Alexander Graham Bell, and a replica is on display in his museum, after having flown in Baddeck on the 100th anniversary in 2009.

    I wonder how the history books got it so wrong when they say the telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell in July 1874 at his parents' home, Melville House, in the city of Brantford, Ontario, Canada. And even worse the history books claim that Bell acquired his Nova Scotia property only eleven years later in 1885, years after he had already become wealthy from his new Bell Telephone Company in 1877.

    • @EdinburghFive
      @EdinburghFive 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bell did indeed invent the telephone. This does not take away from the fact others were also working on the idea. These others had varying degrees of success. It was Bell though who was first to patent the idea, produce a practical operating device, and to make it commercially successful.
      So when did Bell acquire his summer home in Cape Breton?
      The Bell Telephone Company was organized in 1877, this does not mean he instantly became wealthy from it. The company had to invest vast amounts of capital and build a network, acquire paying clients, etc. In time of course we know it became very successful. Bell personally owned very little of the company.

    • @cloudpoint0
      @cloudpoint0 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EdinburghFive
      Bell’s company existed informally since 1874 even before the patent was awarded, and later with a more formal agreement among his backers as of February 27, 1875. The concept of the telephone was understood to have great value early on by some (telegraph people). The patent was issued in 1876 and the device actually worked for the first time three days after the patent was issued.
      A couple years after the company’s establishment in 1877 as a joint stock company with ownership of the patent, the patent was estimated to have a value of $25M, a fortune in those days. Bell and his fellow investors would become millionaires. At one point Bell had assets of nearly one million dollars. By 1886 (9 years later), more than 150,000 people in the U.S. owned telephones. The telephone is said to be one of the most valuable patents in history. His company was the Google offering of his day.
      Bell was the company's technical adviser until he lost interest in telephony in the early 1880s. He appears to have become captivated by Cape Breton Island and Nova Scotia at this time (perhaps it reminded him of his land of birth, Scotland). “In September 1885 the Bell family vacationed in Nova Scotia, Canada, and immediately fell in love with the climate and landscape.” Although his invention rendered him independently wealthy, he sold off most of his stock holdings in the company early and did not profit as much as he might have had he retained his shares. By the mid-1880s his role in the telephone industry was marginal. He was more interested in improving other new inventions.
      “Approximate one-third interests were at first held by Gardiner Greene Hubbard, a lawyer and Bell's future father-in-law; Thomas Sanders, the well-to-do leather merchant father of one of Bell's deaf students (and who was the first to enter into an agreement with Bell); and finally by Alexander Graham Bell.” - Wikipedia

    • @EdinburghFive
      @EdinburghFive 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi @cloudpoint I am familiar with the history of Bell and the eventual success of the companies that became AT&T. There were a series of companies and trusts in the early days of the research and development of the phone. Like today, it was standard practice then to have joint stock companies arranged by the investors.
      I think you will find the Bell family stayed invested in the chain of companies. Bell himself was the research and development brains of the invention. He was never a corporate type that developed and managed the companies. His father-in-law and others were the management initially, and professional management was hired as the company grew. The idea of Bell "losing interest" just means he turned his attention to other research and invention, like so many others of his inventive ilk. It did not mean he sold his or his families shares.
      Not sure where you are getting a market value of the company in 1877 having a value of $25 million. Thomas Sanders owned about one-third of the company at the time. Just a few years later he sold his share for about $1 million. That makes the market capitalization of the company in 1877 somewhat less than $25 million. Of course, in time the company grew to be worth billions.
      In any event, a fascinating story. If you are interested in the longer story of Bell and AT&T, you may want to look for Alvin Toffler’s ‘The Adaptive Corporation’.
      Bell had a wonderful home in Cape Breton. Many years ago, I had the great fortune of visiting Beinn Bhreagh.

      @@EdinburghFive
      I don’t see any disagreement between with what you said in your recent post and what I said earlier, you just provide more details. One correction is needed.
      The patent (not the company) was reported to be worth $25 million, and I said this was two years later, so in 1879. Not in 1877 as you state. This value is sourced to the president of Western Union who told colleagues in 1879 that if he could get the patent for $25 million he would consider it a bargain. I don’t know what the patent itself was valued at when it was first considered to be part of the company’s foundational assets but Massachusetts corporate laws limited capitalization to $10 million.
      Bell sold all his rights to his invention in 1879 and he resigned from the Bell board of directors in 1880 but I’m sure his family (his wife in particular) retained shares of the company. He gave away all but 10 of his 1,497 shares to his new wife upon marriage in 1877 (the company was owned 30% by Bell, 30% by Hubbard, 30% by Sanders and 10% by Watson before this). The company started with 4,500 shares and it had 73,500 shares by 1880 after multiple changes, a merger, etc. I don’t know the company’s value in 1877 but $110,000 had been invested into R&D before start-up. Thomas Watson resigned his position in 1881 and sold his 10% share bringing him up to the status of a millionaire. Sanders also sold his 30% share even earlier for almost $1M. So maybe the company was valued at $3M+ (my guess).
      “In Chicago, on that same day, Elisha Gray was sliding his patent caveat, a notice of intent to develop an invention of a particular description, across a desk in the government office. An engineer with Western Union, Gray had also developed the basic technology of telephonic communication. His patent was received a few hours later than Bell’s, however, and so it was disallowed. It was suggested in court in later proceedings that Hubbard had learned of Gray’s imminent filing and, moreover, had arranged with someone in the patent office to give Bell’s application priority no matter what else happened. For his part, Bell [or Hubbard?] offered to sell the patent outright to Western Union for $100,000 [in 1877, $2.68 million in current dollars]. The president of the company balked, countering that the telephone was nothing but a toy. Two years later [in 1879], he told colleagues that if he could get the patent for $25 million he’d consider it a bargain. By then it wasn’t for sale.” - Multiple sources say this but this was copied from the web page “Inventing the Telephone-And Triggering All-Out Patent War”

    • @EdinburghFive
      @EdinburghFive 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey @cloudpoint In general I agree, we agree on the main points. Just because Western Union 's President says "he could get the patent for $25 million" does not make the company worth that much. In any event he had his chance earlier and making the new statement was purely speculation on his part.
      Arriving at the overall value of the Bell Company must include all the related sister and subsidiary companies and trusts. Of course, in the early years most of the value was in the patents.
      By the way, be careful trying to state old dollar values in current value. It is not that easy. Most people just use a simply inflation rate but that does not give a true value necessarily.
