Dude, I just bought my first rig after 7 months of research, got home, and have been worrying that I went with the wrong size leader for the nymphs I bought. You confirmed I didn’t. Subscribed.
One of my favorite fly patterns in the winter is a nichs pill popper, or any sort of scud pattern. Pink, deep and slow is the way to go here in montana, on the Missouri river.
Thank you. New to your channel. My favorite tip is go south or wear a nice alpaca wool hat. Stay warm on top. I like to run two flies like you suggested.
That is another way, however I have not personally tried it. One other thing to keep in mind is what it will do to your fly line and guides on your rod
Great tips! Thanks! I like to use a zebra midge on the dropper and a somewhat larger Frenchie on the point, and just like you said, the Frenchie takes the tippet deep enough and they hit that Zebra midge.
I dry fly fish in the winter in the driftless. Use a size 20-22 black stonefly. Trout go crazy for them since we have a stonefly hatch in the winter in the driftless
Thank you, haven't developed a winter fly yet for me but i use a duracell jig sz 12, and Orvis Slush egg which i hope to be purchasing from Orvis soon after reading some reviews. Apprciate the tip on roll casting. Hope to be fishing the So. fork of the Snake, in idaho tomorrow
Good informative vid..Im new to fly fishing even at my old age 50... lol so im still figuring out what fly to use during the winter, id have to say a small woolly bugger that has a little flash to it.
I would love a ten foot 3 WT for Euro Nymphing! Winter fishing is great! Less crowds and water flow. I like to trail a half pink/half brown squirmy or a blow torch variant below a 20 incher. Great video!!
New to fly fishing so no favorite patterns yet. But a new rod would sweet! Did look up video to learn how to winter fly. Just bought a rod a week ago to give this a try
Awesome! It’s a great hobby to get into! I’m sure you will find many go to patterns the more you get into it! Any specific questions you have about the sport we could help answer??
Awesome, the Middle Provo is a ton of fun! Midges are hatching and Blue Winged olives should be hatching soon if it ever warms up a little 😂. I’d be sure to have all stages of midges and BWO but keep them small (sizes 18-22). These fish are highly pressured so down size your tippet as well. Good luck!
I’ll be honest I haven’t fished it for a few weeks but the nice thing about the middle provo is that it’s a tail water controlled by Jordenalle dam… flows are at about 200 cfs which is good fishing flows 👍
Awesome overview! Can’t wait to try some winter fishing. More of a gear question, but what do you recommend for what to wear? Gloves, type of jacket, under layers, etc. Native here in CO but have only ever ice fished
Check out our other video on some ideas of how to stay warm th-cam.com/video/CekQ_CR335Q/w-d-xo.html This should at least get you started in the right direction. Biggest advice is to avoid wearing any cotton… fleece is best. And make sure to have plenty of layers. Simms has amazing gear.
I am fishing the rio grande river by my grandparents house but the unfrozen parts of the river seem to be 1-2 foot deep at max. I have been wondering if targeting slow moving sections would be the best way to catch fish? any thoughts
Not to familiar with the rio grande but I would try and find deeper water which might be hard to do with it being frozen… those fish still need to feel protected which is what the deeper water does. Slow (walking pace) & deep water is the ticket for winter time.
But the best choice is always a stop at Lee’s Ferry Anglers, to ask there what’s working, color, size, and setup. They’re on the river every day, and never miss on info.
Congrats to Chris Savva!!! You are the winner of our fly rod giveaway!! Email us at support@streemoutdoors.com
I usually use plain chapstick on the guides, it's cheap and quick.
amen

My favorite is my hand tied blood dot egg! Just getting started in this amazing sport.
Winter it's gotta be a big wooly bugger trailed by a San Juan worm on the bow River! Deadly combination!
Killer combo!!
One of my favorite fly patterns in the winter is a nichs pill popper, or any sort of scud pattern. Pink, deep and slow is the way to go here in montana, on the Missouri river.

Hogan’s Red Headed Step Child, size 16, 18.
Anyone heard of Pam type cooking spray for keeping ice off the guides?
That is another way, however I have not personally tried it. One other thing to keep in mind is what it will do to your fly line and guides on your rod
@@StreemOutdoors 🤜💥🤛 very true. Didnt really think of that.
Great tips! Thanks! I like to use a zebra midge on the dropper and a somewhat larger Frenchie on the point, and just like you said, the Frenchie takes the tippet deep enough and they hit that Zebra midge.

Makes the wait from spring fly fishing alittle more bearable... no winter fly fishing here. Nice video
No winter would be nice!
Great video, keep up the good work. My favorite winter fly is the San Juan pink worm in a small size below an egg pattern fly.
Oddly warm winter in Bozeman right now. Been throwing dry flies almost everytime I go out without fail. Great content
Gotta love finding risers during the winter time!
I love winter fishing. Euro style with a mini Pat’s stone, and a thread frenchie.
That’s a great combo! We have caught tons of fish in every season with that combo!
Both great patterns just about on any water in the winter! Thanks for the comment

Can’t go wrong there!
I would love a ten foot 3 WT for Euro Nymphing! Winter fishing is great! Less crowds and water flow. I like to trail a half pink/half brown squirmy or a blow torch variant below a 20 incher. Great video!!

Stephen, what bodies of water are you planning to fish in the SLC area?
@@StreemOutdoors I'm planning to fish the middle provo.

I’d be sure to have all stages of midges and BWO but keep them small (sizes 18-22). These fish are highly pressured so down size your tippet as well. Good luck!
@@StreemOutdoors how's the water level right now. Looks like they've been getting a lot of ran and snow. Is it fishable?
I’ll be honest I haven’t fished it for a few weeks but the nice thing about the middle provo is that it’s a tail water controlled by Jordenalle dam… flows are at about 200 cfs which is good fishing flows 👍

Mega prince is my favorite winter fly.
