Lynyrd Skynyrd was an awesome band. Unfortunately the majority of the band members a long with the lead singer Ronnie, died in a plane crash. But their music will live on forever.
Along with Ronnie, guitarist Steve Gaines was lost in the crash. The rest of the band despite their injuries were recording and touring again by 1980, most of them together in Rossington Collins Band. Also killed were Cassie Gaines (background vocals), Dean Kilpatrick (road manager) and their pilot and co-pilot.
The plane crash happened in the late 70's. I always wonder just how huge they would've been if it hadn't occurred. Tons of talent disappeared from the earth that day.

And, for me the song was about breaking up with someone and moving on to the next flight-in-life... it was about not being tied down, but about always finding new adventures. Just look at the most iconic instrument for Country, the banjo - invented by African Americans and the most iconic instruments in Blues are the guitar and Harmonica - both invented in Europe. It's part of what make both genres great (pop bastardisation aside) as they're the result of three continents worth of musical tradition.

This is classic Southern rock. Not a country, but a southern rock. It was heavily influenced by blues music, initially a black artist's music. It is beautiful and has a lot of souls. It speaks to people. This IS NOT a cultural appropriation. Not at all. This is a cultural acceptance and cultural respect. I really like seeing you guys enjoying it. It speaks to us. The lyrics are beautiful and speak on many levels. Music unites us and makes us brothers and sisters. I love what you guys are doing. Huge respect. By the way, the band usually finishes their set with this song. I've been to their concert and seen people cry during this song. The band would go for 10-15 minutes at the end with their jam sessions, which would be absolutely beautiful. And please look up what happened to the band on October 20, 1977 and what band did after. There's not much difference between Southern Rock and Modern Country. Listen to Travis Tritt sometime. If Skynyrd were to get there start today, they would be played on country stations. Same for the Eagles.

Simple man, and others all of solid hardcore life . 3 guitars , rhythm, slide, Allen Collins on lead and 1 bass really give a solid full flow of talent. As Allen starts to hit the high, fast riffs, the multi-talented guitarist Steve Gaines joined in, harmonizing the riffs. With two guitarists building the same lead lines, the sound starts blasting exponentially. Finally, bassist Leon Wilkerson joins that building jam. He starts climbing the neck of the bass like the Himalayas, joining the guitarists at the peak. All four of the instrumentalists scale up and down, hammering on and pulling off and shaking the stadium. Finally, the song reaches its peak with all guitarists strumming with all their might. Best guitar solo of all time! I remember the day we heard about the plane crash so clearly. I was on the school bus going home, and when we heard the news on the radio, everyone was silent.
The music is considered southern rock. Ronnie Van Zant sings the lead in all the songs until his death in 1977. The band continued years later with his younger brother Johnny Van Zant , but didnt have the same drive or energy. On a side note, songs you might like from this band; Give me 3 steps, Simple man, Tuesdays gone, Saturday night special and Sweet home Alabama.

I actually think Johnny Van Want did a great job. Might not have had the same drive necessarily, but he had just as much energy on stage. I like Call Me the Breeze too.
You cannot stop the solo at the end of Freebird!!!!! When you saw them live, that solo was a religious experience! I have seen seats ripped out of the floor during this songs solo. Respect the vibe!

I was 8 or 9 when I was on a plane where the band was in first class. The teenaged girl sitting next to me in coach was losing her mind! The flight attendant let me go up and get autographs ❤️. I had no idea who they were.

THIS is why the rock bands of the 70's were the BEST. There were concerts held every weekend. Some were all day, with 3-4 bands. I really miss those days, it was amazing!!!

When a local band is doing a show, in a bar or club, when the audience shouts out for them to play Freebird it isn't just a request, it's a challenge. You really owe it to yourselves to watch a live version of this song, it's mind-blowing. Their performance in Oakland is easy to find and a great performance, but I recommend you watch the one in Knebworth, England in 1976. They were one of the opening bands for The Rolling Stones at a big music festival. The stage was configured for the stars of the show, The Rolling Stones, with a walkway jutting out from the stage made to imitate the tongue on the Stones logo. Mick Jagger had very specific instructions that no one else was allowed to walk out on that "tongue". When Lynyrd Skynyrd took the stage they absolutely owned that massive crowd. Then about halfway through Freebird they walked all the way out that tongue and the crowd loved it. The Stones took the stage way behind schedule and put on a lackluster show, totally overshadowed by Lynyrd Skynyrd. The video for that show on TH-cam is titled "Lynyrd Skynyrd Free Bird Live August 21st, 1976"

Agree about Knebworth. One of the best blu-rays I own. I saw the band on the Smokestack Lightning tour. Was already a fan but was further blown away by Billy Powell on piano. Sadly we don't get a very good look at him in action on the Knebworth disc though.
A huge reason their sound was so tight was they rehearsed for years before they got their break in a little shack out in the sticks outside of Jacksonville. Sweat,passionate about their craft and broke AF. They grinded their way to stardom.
They're jamming but never lose the melody. Not just shredding. The first part of the song is a set-up for the guitar soaring like a freebird, notice in the first part how they give guitar hints about what's about to come...riffs telling you of a bird about to be let loose. Skynyrd learned a lot about arrangement and phrasing and musical lyricality from blues artists in Jacksonville
The Lyrics set up the story so we can "fly away". For me, that's what the guitar solo is all about. Remember that the final lyric is "Free bird fly!" Woah, does Alan Collins make it fly! Running feet, flapping wings, bobbing head the "Free bird" rises and soars off toward places he's got to see. You guys should check out a live performance of "Free Bird". There are several, but my favorite was also Ronnie Van Zant's final performance: Oakland Coliseum, 1977...
"Southern Rock" is what we called that genre. That was one of the biggest tunes of the day. Suggest Edgar Winter. And if you really want to know the Beatles, listen to the whole Sgt. Pepper's or the whole White Album.

When I was 14-ish, my dad always "vetted" who I could go see at a concert. He didn't want me to be exposed any bad influences. After listening to Free Bird and the OUTLAW's Green Grass and High Tides, he said that no one who played a guitar that long and that hard could be on drugs or drunk. He let me go to both.

Aretha Franklin to the stones to U2... the list goes on and on.... they call it the "Muscle Shoals sound"

Watch their video of playing this in Oakland, on the Rolling Stones stage in 1976 was EPIC. In 1977, EVERY 20-something girl in Northern California was there, still awesome but more of a show. For Free Bird, love is not the point. Because when you've got the gift of wings, you gotta fly. Don't know about coming back, but you do know you just can't stay. Makes you feel like you could run like Eric Dickerson, Adrian Peterson, Barry Sanders, ..... name the Hero. The radio stations ran this song into the ground back in the '70's. But like a Phoenix, it just keeps jumping back up and ROARING on! The first part always makes me feel like it's the start of something righteous or royal. Then it morphs into this almighty football game, on a field about 10 miles long, with a gauntlet of defenders on both sides. As you run the ball with your blockers, its like a human avalanche, overwhelming defenders coming in from both sides. Relentless power that keeps building up speed and momentum. Jumping, leaping, brawling, smashing in, and busting out. As you breathe faster and deeper, your chest swells up like 20,000 rpm turbo-supercharger, shifting gears through a 30 speed transmission. Gets so intense you think your heart is going to burst, but instead of getting tired, you just keep getting defiantly stronger .. I loved watching yall listen to Freebird for the first time. My husband was a huge Skynyrd fan and I totally got hooked when I met him! He passed away June 26, 2022 and I had this played at his funeral. If you really listen to the words knowing he fought a 15+ year battle with cancer...he is now free, free from pain and the struggle of always fighting.

LS had 3 lead guitarists, and one of the staples of Southern Rock bands was harmonizing lead guitars. Allman Brothers invented that sound and LS perfected it.

In my opinion, "Free Bird" is the greatest American rock-n-roll song of all time and Lynryd Skynrd is the top guitar group of all time (alongside the Eagles). So, yes, check this one out live and then they also do their "Sweet Home Alabama" which is a fun song from the same concert 1977. Sadly, they lost three band members (and three crew) including Ronnie Van Zandt, the lead singer, in a terrible plane crash just months after this concert.

I grew up in the 70s. Us boomers listened to ALL genres. I loved the Spinner, Stevie Wonder, Carole King, Todd Rundgren, Led Zeppelin, Linda ronstadt, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Jimi Hendrix, Gordon Lightfoot, Jackson Five, Earth Wind and Fire, Alice Cooper, Marshall Tucker. And you could hear it all on one radio station. R&B, funk, rock, heavy metal, singer songwriter, country, country rock, and pop. . And my mom exposed me to Johnny Mathis, Frank Sinatra, Barbara Streisand, Louis Armstrong. We heard all genres. And got to appreciate them all. Just a wide array of music. I’ve left out so many. Bob Marley, The Doors, Hall & Oats A good way to learn to appreciate all kinds of music.

Y’all watch a documentary on Lynyrd Skynyrd and you’ll find out how they got their band name if you haven’t heard already. Their high school coach’s name was Leonard Skinner. They had long hair back in high school and the coach would constantly make them run track and be on their case about it. So they named their band after him so they call themselves Lynyrd Skynyrd. I can't pretend I ever followed the band or the members, but I had no idea the last one passed this yr.
Lynyrd Skynyrd was an awesome band. Unfortunately the majority of the band members a long with the lead singer Ronnie, died in a plane crash. But their music will live on forever.
Along with Ronnie, guitarist Steve Gaines was lost in the crash. The rest of the band despite their injuries were recording and touring again by 1980, most of them together in Rossington Collins Band.
Also killed were Cassie Gaines (background vocals), Dean Kilpatrick (road manager) and their pilot and co-pilot.
The plane crash happened in the late 70's. I always wonder just how huge they would've been if it hadn't occurred. Tons of talent disappeared from the earth that day.

And, for me the song was about breaking up with someone and moving on to the next flight-in-life... it was about not being tied down, but about always finding new adventures. The band was named after Leonard Skinner- the school's gym coach- in Jacksonville, FL. Thanks for sharing a great reaction!

Just look at the most iconic instrument for Country, the banjo - invented by African Americans and the most iconic instruments in Blues are the guitar and Harmonica - both invented in Europe. It's part of what make both genres great (pop bastardisation aside) as they're the result of three continents worth of musical tradition.

This is classic Southern rock. Not a country, but a southern rock. It was heavily influenced by blues music, initially a black artist's music. It is beautiful and has a lot of souls. It speaks to people. This IS NOT a cultural appropriation. Not at all. This is a cultural acceptance and cultural respect. I really like seeing you guys enjoying it. It speaks to us. The lyrics are beautiful and speak on many levels. Music unites us and makes us brothers and sisters. I love what you guys are doing. Huge respect.
By the way, the band usually finishes their set with this song. I've been to their concert and seen people cry during this song. The band would go for 10-15 minutes at the end with their jam sessions, which would be absolutely beautiful.

As Allen starts to hit the high, fast riffs, the multi-talented guitarist Steve Gaines joined in, harmonizing the riffs. With two guitarists building the same lead lines, the sound starts blasting exponentially.
Finally, bassist Leon Wilkerson joins that building jam. He starts climbing the neck of the bass like the Himalayas, joining the guitarists at the peak. All four of the instrumentalists scale up and down, hammering on and pulling off and shaking the stadium. Finally, the song reaches its peak with all guitarists strumming with all their might. Then, the song comes to an end.

Best guitar solo of all time! I remember the day we heard about the plane crash so clearly. I was on the school bus going home, and when we heard the news on the radio, everyone was silent.
The music is considered southern rock.
Ronnie Van Zant sings the lead in all the songs until his death in 1977. The band continued years later with his younger brother Johnny Van Zant , but didnt have the same drive or energy.

When a local band is doing a show, in a bar or club, when the audience shouts out for them to play Freebird it isn't just a request, it's a challenge.
You really owe it to yourselves to watch a live version of this song, it's mind-blowing. Their performance in Oakland is easy to find and a great performance, but I recommend you watch the one in Knebworth, England in 1976. They were one of the opening bands for The Rolling Stones at a big music festival. The stage was configured for the stars of the show, The Rolling Stones, with a walkway jutting out from the stage made to imitate the tongue on the Stones logo. Mick Jagger had very specific instructions that no one else was allowed to walk out on that "tongue". When Lynyrd Skynyrd took the stage they absolutely owned that massive crowd. Then about halfway through Freebird they walked all the way out that tongue and the crowd loved it. The Stones took the stage way behind schedule and put on a lackluster show, totally overshadowed by Lynyrd Skynyrd. The video for that show on TH-cam is titled "Lynyrd Skynyrd Free Bird Live August 21st, 1976"
And that was the day Jagger learned not to try giving orders to a bunch of American Good 'Ol Boys. ESPECIALLY not in the summer of 1976.

Agree about Knebworth. One of the best blu-rays I own. I saw the band on the Smokestack Lightning tour. Was already a fan but was further blown away by Billy Powell on piano. Sadly we don't get a very good look at him in action on the Knebworth disc though.

A huge reason their sound was so tight was they rehearsed for years before they got their break in a little shack out in the sticks outside of Jacksonville. Sweat,passionate about their craft and broke AF. They grinded their way to stardom.

They're jamming but never lose the melody. Not just shredding. The first part of the song is a set-up for the guitar soaring like a freebird, notice in the first part how they give guitar hints about what's about to come...riffs telling you of a bird about to be let loose. Skynyrd learned a lot about arrangement and phrasing and musical lyricality from blues artists in Jacksonville
The Lyrics set up the story so we can "fly away". For me, that's what the guitar solo is all about. Remember that the final lyric is "Free bird fly!" Woah, does Alan Collins make it fly! Running feet, flapping wings, bobbing head the "Free bird" rises and soars off toward places he's got to see. You guys should check out a live performance of "Free Bird". There are several, but my favorite was also Ronnie Van Zant's final performance: Oakland Coliseum, 1977...

When I was 14-ish, my dad always "vetted" who I could go see at a concert. He didn't want me to be exposed any bad influences. After listening to Free Bird and the OUTLAW's Green Grass and High Tides, he said that no one who played a guitar that long and that hard could be on drugs or drunk. He let me go to both.

@@joshualeblanc8557 they recorded this in Muscle Shoals Alabama with the recording studio house band "the swampers" I can remember if they recorded it at "fame" studio or the studio the swapmers left to run themselves... it's been a minute since I watch the documentary but you can find on here for free simply titled "Muscle Shoals" it's worth watching... alot of different artists used both of those studios ... Aretha Franklin to the stones to U2... the list goes on and on.... they call it the "Muscle Shoals sound"

I saw them in 1976! They rocked the Angel stadium ! Sadly in October 1977 their plan crashed 💔 Ronnie, Steve, and Cassie passed away but their legacy lives on 🤟🎶

3 Guitars rotating with each other for the lead. They called it the Guitar-Army. Watch their video of playing this in Oakland, on the Rolling Stones stage in 1976 was EPIC. In 1977, EVERY 20-something girl in Northern California was there, still awesome but more of a show.

The radio stations ran this song into the ground back in the '70's. But like a Phoenix, it just keeps jumping back up and ROARING on!
The first part always makes me feel like it's the start of something righteous or royal.
Then it morphs into this almighty football game, on a field about 10 miles long, with a gauntlet of defenders on both sides.
As you run the ball with your blockers, its like a human avalanche, overwhelming defenders coming in from both sides. Relentless power that keeps building up speed and momentum. Jumping, leaping, brawling, smashing in, and busting out.
As you breathe faster and deeper, your chest swells up like 20,000 rpm turbo-supercharger, shifting gears through a 30 speed transmission.
Gets so intense you think your heart is going to burst, but instead of getting tired, you just keep getting defiantly stronger ..

I loved watching yall listen to Freebird for the first time. My husband was a huge Skynyrd fan and I totally got hooked when I met him! He passed away June 26, 2022 and I had this played at his funeral. If you really listen to the words knowing he fought a 15+ year battle with cancer...he is now free, free from pain and the struggle of always fighting.

OMG...watching you guy made me CRY. I was reliving my youth vicariously through you. Skynard was jamming when I was in high school and their plane crash was my first year of college. Thanks for the gloriuos reunion and a walk down memory lane. So glad you all are getting tuned in and turned on to REAL music and incredible talent. White boys could rock in the day!!!!!!!!!!!
LS had 3 lead guitarists, and one of the staples of Southern Rock bands was harmonizing lead guitars. Allman Brothers invented that sound and LS perfected it.

This band featured 3 lead guitars!!! This is an example of Southern Rock. A shame that Ronnie passed away. I'm so glad that members of the younger generation are appreciating the music that my generation grew up on.

Yes, guy in the middle, you got it - the guitar is the star of the song. Simple, nice lyrics and then KICK ASS guitars! You guys really need to see the live version so you can watch them in action. In my opinion, "Free Bird" is the greatest American rock-n-roll song of all time and Lynryd Skynrd is the top guitar group of all time (alongside the Eagles). So, yes, check this one out live and then they also do their "Sweet Home Alabama" which is a fun song from the same concert 1977. Sadly, they lost three band members (and three crew) including Ronnie Van Zandt, the lead singer, in a terrible plane crash just months after this concert.
I agree with all but must add. In the live versions I think then piano doesn’t get enough credit. The opening and piano solo in the middle is fire 🔥

I love hip-hop, rock, blues. All kinds of music. But Lynard Skynard is one of my most fave of all bands of all time. Besides Tom Macdonald!! Freebird is a definite fave. Yall need to do Simple Man!! 💜

I grew up in the 70s. Us boomers listened to ALL genres. I loved the Spinner, Stevie Wonder, Carole King, Todd Rundgren, Led Zeppelin, Linda ronstadt, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Jimi Hendrix, Gordon Lightfoot, Jackson Five, Earth Wind and Fire, Alice Cooper, Marshall Tucker.
And you could hear it all on one radio station. R&B, funk, rock, heavy metal, singer songwriter, country, country rock, and pop. . And my mom exposed me to Johnny Mathis, Frank Sinatra, Barbara Streisand, Louis Armstrong. We heard all genres. And got to appreciate them all. Just a wide array of music. I’ve left out so many. Bob Marley, The Doors, Hall & Oats

This has always felt like a true Southern Rock anthem to me. It's as impressive as Bohemian Rhapsody or Stairway to Heaven. All incredible in their own ways. Seriously, we are blessed with a crazy amount of good tunes to listen to. 🤘

Y’all watch a documentary on Lynyrd Skynyrd and you’ll find out how they got their band name if you haven’t heard already. Their high school coach’s name was Leonard Skinner. They had long hair back in high school and the coach would constantly make them run track and be on their case about it. So they named their band after him so they call themselves Lynyrd Skynyrd. Awesome guys! Ronnie Van Zant profected Southern Rock. I saw them on TV when I was 12 years old. I will be 60 soon and this is still my all time favorite band. I loved Ronnie the minuet I saw him and I will love him when I take my last breath. Ronnie's voice just touches my soul. Welcome to Skynyrd Nation!!!❤❤
