A glimpse into the HIDDEN WORLD of a Satmar Hasidic Woman | Top moments with Pearl and Frieda

  • Happy New Year! Thanks for being on this journey in 2023.
As a way to see out the year and bid it farewell, I'm sharing a compilation of best-of my first two segments with Pearl.
Pearl has been such a light, joy and source of humor and friendship in my life. We not only had some wonderful discussions which so many of you enjoyed, she also has become a personal friend with whom I have shared so many meaningful discussions. I am so grateful for the opportunities I have had to have these experiences, which are all thanks to this channel. This channel is a lot of work, and rarely does a video bring in the youtube revenue to cover its costs. But it's a passion project that is well worth it for experiences and friendships like my friendship with Pearl.
Thank you all for being such great participants to this channel.
Happy New Year and warm greetings,
    Frieda

To see out the year and bid it farewell, I'm sharing a compilation of the best-of my first two segments with Pearl.
Pearl has been such a light, joy and source of humor and friendship in my life. We not only had some wonderful discussions which so many of you enjoyed, she also has become a special friend with whom I have shared so many meaningful discussions and side-splitting laughs. I am so grateful for the opportunities I have had to have these experiences, which are all thanks to this channel. This channel is a lot of work and rarely does a video bring in the youtube revenue to cover its costs. But it's a passion project worth it for experiences and friendships like my friendship with Pearl, among many.
Thank you all for being such great participants and making this project possible. I especially want to thank you all for your kindness and your comments. They mean a lot.
Happy New Year and warm greetings,
    Frieda

I just love her. She reminds me of what it is I love about the chassidishe world, just when I needed to be reminded the most. I’m sure she knows that she has done a service in making our world understandable to outsiders. I’m not sure she realizes how many of our own she has knocked a little bit of sense back into.

Wishing you a year of health, wealth and happiness. Your hard work is original, fun, and appreciated. If we continue to educate and celebrate the differences both within and outside the ( and all) religion and culture, my hope is that tolerance and acceptance will increase. What I love to see is the acceptance of the shops and community when you walk and film in the neighbourhoods. Thank you for your videos!

I was going to make that exact comment! Everyone thinks they are so far removed from the world and I guess they are but they aren’t ignorant of what’s going on. The more I learn about this culture the more I believe they are (over all) much happier and content than 99 percent of the outside world.

I commented once on these videos and now want to add that - growing up in the Bronx, we had several Jewish neighbors who were very kind to us Irish Catholics after my father died when I was a child. My mother was left a widow with two small children. One Jewish neighbor periodically brought over pieces of cooked fish, chicken soup, and chopped liver (I wasn't wild about the latter but ate everything else LOL) Also, every Passover when they had to remove certain grain items e.g., noodles, they gave it to my mother. That was the only time of the year we ate Goodman's noodles; my mother routinely only purchased Muller's or Ronzoni. (Hey, noodles are noodles.) I clearly remember this from many decades ago.

I miss the videos with Pearl!!!!! She is amazing!!! She is sooo sure of her beliefs and her place in her community. I love how she has an intelligent answer for everything. We hear so many stories of people "escaping" the Hasidic communities (especially Satmar) and comparing them to cults. She is another point of view of someone who has been very happy living there. Good for her! I wish that G-d always blesses her and her family!

Thank you for these interviews! Because if you want to know what a faith believes, you need to ask someone who's joyfully living it! I often see former members of a religion being asked about it. Their perspective is too limited. Ask a person who's doing it successfully--like Pearl!

Of course, everyone is speaking their respective truth, based on their experiences. I still hold that if you want to know about something, it's more informative to ask someone doing it successfully. Just like college or marriage or parenting or even travel--those who found it unfulfilling clearly missed something. Ask someone who got the whole picture! :-)

How do Hasidic families feel about marriage therapy? Do they prefer to rely on their Rabbi for the most intimate of problems or is there a concern about “gossip” spreading about their home?
I had a few questions about Pearl’s comments about higher education. She says they don’t encourage college. I always thought the men chose a Yeshiva for their “higher education” but I don’t know if they attend Yeshiva to obtain a rabbinic degree of some sort. How many years do the men attend higher Yeshiva (beyond a high school level)? Women are supposed to make the home and family, according to Pearl’s beliefs. Why don’t they want some of their OWN community to go to law school and medical school so their community can be served by one of their own? Wouldn’t a woman prefer to see an OB/GYN who is an Hasidic woman?
In Amish communities, which I completely understand are quite different but they are similarly insular, they have a Rumspringa. The Rumspringa is premised on their faith requiring members being baptized as fully awar adults. Awareness requires that they have the OPTION to explore and live as “the English do”, for as long as they need, to feel more secure that they want to commit to the Amish faith.
Is there any room in the Hasidism for a similar “period of experiencing the world?” Would such a period help reduce the rates of youth sprinting from the communities?

I understand completely why children are raised according to their parent’s religion but the fears she had for her son is exactly why children should be given some tools to survive in the world. We can only know how wonderful Judaism is, if we understand others and the rest of the world and are able to interact in that world. Respecting their choices is hard and sometimes heartbreaking, but Hashem gives us the ability of free thinking. Taking it away goes against that. Pearl is a free thinker, insightful, respectful and an amazing parent.

@@FriedaVizelBrooklyn thank you so much for letting me know that she is doing well. As an older woman myself and being a Christian who understands the part that Jews play in the Lord's plan, I have the ultimate respect for your faith. She completely changed my view on Zionism because I did not understand or know it to be anti-zionist was a good thing because the Jews were not to return to Israel until the 2nd coming of Jesus. As a gentile I think maybe this arranged meeting for the sake of marriage thing sounds pretty good. I like the idea of the parents checking someone out. The problem with that, is if you have parents you don't trust to help you out. If I was abused by my parents for example or they had a horrible marriage they would be the last people I would wanting facilitating a marriage. But as someone who has been with my spouse ( another woman) for over 20 years I can tell you there are things that I did not consider when we met and decided to spend our lives together that my parents in a lifelong marriage would have thought of. Thankfully, it all worked out and she is a great spouse.

Rachael, I just want to say it was so delightful to meet you and your wife and I’m so happy to hear your thoughts on how we make decisions about partners without having some of the wisdom that comes with the years. I have learned over the years how true that is!

As a Christian I would love to have a conversation with Pearl. I think she is a lovely lady. I was taken aback when she said they would rather die thank kiss the cross. I understand to a point. But Pearl should be educated about Christians who know God too. We study the Old Testament as well as the New Testament. There is room for all as well as understanding and acceptance.

Y’all should have a round table talk about how the community is doing with all the war and antisemitism going on. I’m praying for all Jews, I know your heart is heavy. Mine is too, as a Christian. 💙🇮🇱
