It’s not about trees being wood. He’s emphasizing the obvious to make the point that resources were available to repair ships, etc. Not going to be happening on Mars. Get it?
All sounds like a pipe dream to me. Weight is a huge factor when launching anything into space. Not only does they need enough supplies to go there. They also need enough supplies to last until they get setup there. Just growing plants in mars would be a huge feat. The soil has little to no nutrients and is deadly to plants without treatment. It would be a race against time to find a water source and have that water source clean enough to both grow plants and hydrate themselves.
That's the current plan, SpaceX wants to send six cargo Starships to Mars in 2026 (though I think 2028 is the earliest realistic date) and then humans two years later
Finding the new world wasn't actually hard for Columbus. He was able to use proven ships and he had crews who knew how to operate them. The wind blew him west and the Americas are way too big to accidently reach the Pacific without seeing them. Food and water for a couple weeks as basically the only freight was no big deal either, the ships were able to carry a lot more. Nothing new needed to get developed and the journey itself was the only thing that needed to get tested. The hardest part was convincing the crew that the story of falling from the edge of a flat world wasn't true. The second hardest part was finding winds that brought them back to Europe.
There's also a theory that Columbus knew about the New World because some Genoese navigators were aware of Scandinavian expeditions to Vinland. His miscalculation of Earth's size was deliberate because the westward route to India was just a cover story.
I wish I could bring him to my family’s Christmas Dinner. He just has such a special way of describing everything. Yes I am the only one who is not born again.

The "Hellas Planetia" is the largest spanning deep area on Mars. It may not be good for sun if your close to the walls, but it has the highest concentration of atmosphere (carbon dioxide) which can be converted to oxygen and doubles as a little bit of UV protection.
