    I've been using the smoke tubes. They work great! They bellow smokefrom them. For meats cold smoke for 40 min then fire up the pelletstove for the cook. Cheese I cold smoke for 2 hours. Fish I cold smokefor 6 hours then fire up the pellet stove to cook til 140 temp.

    That's the results I came out with as well. I Love Bear Mountain too! And I go between those 3 most of the time. I first heard that Lumberjack made pellets for Weber and they do look very similar. Then someone commented that they also made pellets for Kingsford, but by looking at them it's hard to say but they don't look anything alike! I recently got to review a small producers wine infused pellets and man, those not only had a great smoky flavor, but also I feel the wine brought out the flavor of the meat! So I've now included them in my favorites! Awesome review!👍👊

    I just started cooking on a pellet grill. On my quest to picking out a grill I quickly became a fan of yours. Can’t recall where but I came across info that Bear Mountain acquired Lumberjack. From what I gathered Lumberjack changed their pellet ratios closer to that of Bear Mountain. It would make sense they came in as your top two. Congrats on the ambassadorship. I’m always looking forward to your videos.

As part of the fine tuning, I am narrowing down my preferred pellets - down to Bear Mountain and Knotty Wood. I am finding my meat choice may dictate my choice of pellets but not quite to any definitive answers. Thx for all your work and insights - please keep up to good work!!!!

    I've tried almost every brand out there and have found Lumberjack 100% Hickory to be my favorite and Knottywood Plum as my runner up. The one brand I haven't tried yet is actually Bear Mountain and that's mainly because it's hard to find their 100% flavor version. It seems that every store always want's to stock the blends. In my personal experience blends tend to have less smoke flavor. If I ever come across the 100% Hickory from Bear Mountain I'll give them a try.

    Lumberjack was acquired about a year ago by the same company that owns Bear Mountain. Owner = Lignetics. Seems like both brands are still manufacturing independently, but wonder if that will continue to be so in the future. Big fan of Lumberjack, but been getting harder and harder to find them in stores.

    Great comparison!
    I'm wondering if humidity content of the product had anything to do with it?
    Also I know my pellet smoker doesn't always smoke continuously. It's only when the pallets hit the auger and go into the pot..
    Please try Kirkland

      Thanks. They were all stored in my garage so they would be close. Most pellet grills smoke in waves, I watched the cycles and graded on that.
      Kirkland is going just going to be a rebagged Traeger probably since they sell their grills there. It won’t be one of the top ones on the list. 🍻

    Really odd I haven't come across this video before today. As you pointed out there are certainly a lot of variables but one for me is the amount and type of ash in the firepot which shows how clean something burns. In my 10 years of owning a pellet grill (Rec Tec and now LSG) I used Bear Mountain and CookinPellets for about 6 years but started to notice quite a bit of hard type ash pieces left over from Bear Mountain. This made me try Kingsford and for the past three years through two different cookers they are now my favorite. They seem to give good smoke and burn really clean with just ash left over. I live in central FL and all are stored in my garage year round and haven't noticed any differences because of humidity. My local Winn Dixie grocery store has Kingsford for $15 for 20# and will put them on sale occasionally for $12 for 20# and I stock up. Thx for putting this together, I enjoy your videos.

    I’m surprised Cookinpellets didn’t perform better. I haven’t tried the 100% Hickory (I have a bag waiting in my garage of it), but I’ve tried the Perfect Mix and the Longhorn Blend. I haven’t done scientific taste tests, but I’ve been impressed by the quality of the construction of their pellets. They look and feel well-made, unlike the stubby and craggy pellets that some other brands put out there.

    Awesome Video! I've used a pellet smoker for about 4 years and only use lumberjack or bear mountain hickory. They put out a decent amount of smoke. I think where a lot of people get misconceptions of pellets is using cheap or low end pellets that do not produce much smoke. Like you said using 100% hardwoods with no fillers such as hickory, mesquite or oak will go a long way with getting you some smoke.

    Hello, I would like to create my own custom mix which I plan to use mainly for adding a smoky flavor to some of my aged whole muscle and salamis. I am thinking of using hickory, pecan, apple, and cherry pellets.
    I wonder if it would be a good idea to mix all four and in what proportions I should mix it. Thanks in advance for your advice.

    • @RumandCook
      @RumandCook  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I usually mix in some Cherry when I want some added color and a little sweetness. I haven’t mixed 4 before. I’d try hickory, pecan, and cherry in thirds and see how you like it. Or switch Cherry for Apple. That will give you some smoke, but some sweetness. 2 fruits might make too weak of smoke flavor. 🍻

      I'd like to see a video with some veggie options please. Not talking about burgers with plant patties (though I'm sure someone would be interested in that as well), but something to throw on a side while you have your grill nice and hot from whatever you cooked there - to please vegetarians and provide extra variety. Interested both in ideas and in techniques - there definitely is a room for errors ) I tried veggie skewers - mushrooms turned into a brown foam completely ruining everything around it, grilled corn dried out and tasted like plaster, haloumi cheese either got burned, or melted through grates or didn't taste grilled at all. Yes, I'm very novice and that's why I'm here - thank you for what you're doing!

      I typically use a lot of Pecan, Oak, and Hickory. Pecan, and Oak for long cooks (ribs, pork butts, briskets) and Oak or Hickory for shorter cooks looks chicken.
      If I want some added sweetness or color I’ll mix in some cherry. I don’t use Apple in a pellet smoker because the flavor is too light.

      Majority of the cheap pellets have a bunch of filler in them. This part of the reason they lack smoke flavor.

    I would say quality of the pellets would determine why you need to try so many to find one that works which leads me to think that there is no quality control during the manufacturering of wood pellets for smokers... It is an uncontrolled industry and the manufacturer can put on the outside of the bag anything he wants to get you to believe they're buying the best but when you get home I put them in the smoker all they do is create white smoke.. If I use a cheaper quality would I can save money since the manufacturer to himself but as long as people keep buying them and they gotten used to white smoke all over their meat I'll keep making them the same way then everybody's happy that likes white smoke...

    • @RumandCook
      @RumandCook  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Much like the lump industry, quality greatly varies depending on the brand and how much you spend.
      Since a pellet grill doesn’t put out the most smoke to begin with, it’s important to use high quality pellets. Thanks for watching. 🍻

    Long time experienced stick smoker here. Using quantity of smoke as your only metric is not a good idea. Too much smoke is bad, you do not want your smoker rolling like a freight train. What you want is what's called TBS, thin blue smoke. A little smoke over a longer period of time is much better than pouring the smoke on thick.

    • @RumandCook
      @RumandCook  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can certainly over smoke something and it will taste terrible lol.
      This is why I said don’t use a secondary smoke source for more than half the cook, a few hours (depending on length of cook) is more than enough.
      That being said, TBS is great for 1/2 - 3/4 of a cook, but some mildly dirty smoke in the beginning is beneficial and adds a great layer of smoke that won’t be bitter or over smoked in the end. Many have changed to that or are talking about it. I’ve tried both ways on my offset and it does taste better.
      Thanks for watching! 🍻

      Lowes sells Bear Mountain. Way more flavor and still easy to get.

    I love your scientific approach. Any experiment should be done in a way that results can be reproduced!

      Sorry for the really bad autocorrect in my original reply hopefully that's gone forever!

    Put charcoal pellets and apple wood pellets in a smoke tube and thank me later 😊

    Wood pellets here aren't cheap and hard to light

      Easier to use a torch to light. They usually take a bit to get going. 🍻

      Clearly didn’t watch the whole video 🙄 If you did, you would know I approached them after doing my test.

      @@RumandCook I did watch it. It's just a joke. Bear and lumber make a great product no surprise your conclusion had them both ontop.

    YEP I say buy a bag of each and do you own analyis. Sure it may take some time but at least you will know. Jake love your channel and videos , But not sure how you can seriously lend any credabilty to the subject when you honestly say your an ambassador. Of course thats what you will be cooking with. Like a politician. SMDH

      I was not an ambassador when I ran these tests. I approached Bear Mountain months AFTER I ran these tests. I clearly explained that in the video near the end when I discussed how I became an ambassador.
      I also said I was not planning on doing the video based on my tests. People kept asking so I put it out. There is nothing but 100% straight forward honesty in this video.
