discovered this video this weekend after playing on and on the video of the Pogues and seeing the video of his funeral. Thank you for the music . I loved it.
my girlfriend plays the flute, alto flute, piano etc, even ukulele and guitar (+bass) but she plays her flute/alto in school, and they always play Fairytale of New York during their concerts (especially xmas). And I always cry at that one iconic part where the whole band and choir comes joines, my heart just MELTS watching her play and have so much fun :") she encouraged me to pick up the recorder, cause i've always wanted to be in band/do music but my mom never allowed me, and i kinda got jealous at her 11 years of expertise. she played duets with me and taught me and helped me with fingering:") and we found this channel!! thank you for helping me so much!
Thank you Sarah, for this Christmas tutorial. Being able to play the whistle solo in this song is a wish for years. ❤️ love it! Both my neighbour and I are studying right now. :)
Thanks, Sarah! This is very fun to play. I play it on my alto by playing the lowest passages an octave higher. Playing in unison with you is good practice for my intonation.
Happy, happy New Year...number five is it. Well I love team recorder and I get a lot of it and I don't even play the recorder, much...I do enjoy and learn from your many lessons regarding musicianship. I play the tuba. Thank you, thank you.
ONE OF MY STUDENTS’ mums bought me a keyboard for christmas :D. So so happy. I stopped playing piano for some years as I move around every few years and haven’t settled anywhere (Stress, travel or money problems) so I didn’t buy a new keyboard when I moved to Milan and did other things. I got back into archery again after a few years without access to a range. Funny that the second I buy and start on the recorder I get a free keyboard. You have given me a love for the recorder that I never had before. I thought the piano was my only love and never really liked the flute family really. Probably because I am into metal so the recorder never really crossed my mind apart from being the cheapest and most portable instrument. So I am going to push through the beginner argh my ears months and keep going with it. Tomorrow I am picking up a new pearwood soprano which should be nicer than the €10 plastic one I bought a week or so ago. Also on the first one the foot joint won’t budge so I can’t play low c. On this new one that should be in the correct position. Eventually I want to buy a real piano and move to a quality wooden tenor recorder but for now I am pretty excited!
I just played this for CutiePie's Christmas Orchestra on tin whistle and flute, now I'm going to dust off my old recorder and learn it on that as well :) Thanks for the tutorial!
Can't wait to learn this on a soprano and sopranino. The dogs in my neighborhood will love those high notes. 😉 Thanks for 4 lovely years of music, Sarah! And kiss Bodil for us all.
Congratulations! 🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵 Op naar de vijfde verjaardag! You have a great channel. I have never stopped playing the recorder and it was and ever will be the most important thing to take with me on an uninhabited island, but you gave me new inspiration! Thank you for that!
Congrats on four years of Team Recorder Sarah! It's one of my highlights of every week - I always look forward to seeing what you have in store for us recorder fans. Thank you!
And I also just wanted to say, on the off chance that you’re seeing this - thank you for fixing the words 💜 it’s amazing to feel so accepted and defended by (my favorite) classical performer? Like that you won’t stand for casual homophobia in the industry? Ddgsgdfsgdf sorry I’m not very articulate - I just. I’ve always loved your channel and now I know I’m safe here and love it even more? 💜💜
Thank you so much for your nice comment! I can't tell you how much it means to me! 😊 I want this to be a safe and accepting place, for my LGBT+ recorder players especially. Big love to you 😘😘😘
Clarianet To be fair though, back when it was recorded, the word held a lot less weight. I completely understand when someone doesn’t like hearing it but to change the words of a song is like removing the statue of a David’s genitals just because they might make someone uncomfortable.
@@Jacob-eq4ld Hi Jacob, I'm not sure if the word held less weight back then, more that the feelings and safety of LGBTQ+ people were not seen as worthy of respect. There's nothing wrong with changing words in a song and letting it evolve over time - this happens all the time in folk music too 😊
While in general your statement about casual homophobia is true, it misses the mark here. To change this lyric strips the verse of its meaning and intent. There was nothing "casual" about this word choice (Shane spent 3 years fine tuning the lyrics to this song), but you don't need any history of the writing process to see this, it is evident in the structure of the song. The lyrics alternate the "fairytale" of New York with the "reality" of New York. The fairytale is in the previous verse, with the "Queen of New York" line. A fairytale of a city where everyone was accepted for who they were and to be different was ok. The verse with the contentious lyric reflects the reality (of the period). A city where it was most certainly not safe to be different. The implication here, by the surrounding lyrics is that this verse is being sung by the NYPD choir and anyone who was gay in New York during the period sung about can tell you exactly how accepting and welcoming New York's Finest were to anyone who was different (their favorite greeting was to hit you over the head with a night stick). As always, wonderful vid, @Sarah Jeffery / Team Recorder
Did you also change the line "You're an old slut on junk"? Or are you only concerned about one section of the community being offended? 😁They sang the full song with all the original lyrics from the church altar at Shane MacGowan's funeral last week.
Hello!! First, I'm sorry for never commenting!! I've been keeping up with your channel for the past 3 years, and I remember watching your video on Renaissance Recorders! I really appreciate your content and knowledge that you share! Thanks for continuing making videos about the amazing recorder!
I was at a musical Christmas party last night and had the opportunity to sing/play ‘Fairytale of New York’. The person I was singing with wanted me to keep the original lyric, and said, “you won’t sing the f-word, huh?” ... I noticed that although they thought it was a good idea that *I* sing the original lyric, *they* wouldn’t say it out loud, either. “Jackets” it is. The change got delighted laughter from a few who knew the song, and henceforth, these will be my go-to words when singing this song.
tahnks so much for sharing this, the other music i found was too low for my flute, took me ages to copy in my music book..but soooo worht it...thank you...big love *
Four years old! Wow! 😲 It seems just like yesterday. Time flies by when having fun with Team Recorder. Wishing you continuing success! 😉 BTW: “The very nasty homophobic slur” comes in verse five of the song, not verse two. Happy holidays! 😊 ♫ 🎄 🎁
HI Sarah, thanks of your chanel and some other ones like yours, I learned the bases of recorder and I even started to play some songs and tunes, however whatever I try it's almost impossible for me to play the notes on the second scale /the high notes/ I can reach since the G high, but cannot go furhter I see you are playing even the highest notes on recorder, can you please give some advises, thank you in advance
I want to send you a recording of my attempt at nothing else matters by Metallica on piano and very beginner recorder. It fits pretty easily on recorder in the original key of E minor so I am so happy that I can play along after just 2 weeks of buying my first recorder. Where can I send it to?
Fa# is Fi eg "I" is for the incidentals eg C scale chromatically----- DO DI RE RI MI FA FI SO SI LA LI TI DO ( that's why there is no 'MO' for E or 'TO' for B, they are half steps) But you know that lol
"......it rhymes, and you're not being a horrible person." LOVE IT!!
The rest of the video was just as awesome! Thanks!

Always a professional! Always a lovely person! Thank you a whole lot for the choices, the pieces of advice, the positive attitude, everything really!

Thank you for all these lovely videos in the past four years, thank you for your great lessons, and I like your jacket! :-) Happy 2020!
I never played recorder I play classical guitar for a long time. your videos made me crazy to play recorder. I'm going to start from soprano recorder.
Awesome 4 years and still going strong.
Love the strikes! Trills, yeah; but strikes, perfect. Makes it very folksy. I've a practice chanter, so... :-)
The wood of this recorder is so gorgeous
tahnks so much for sharing this, the other music i found was too low for my flute, took me ages to copy in my music book..but soooo worht it...thank you...big love *
I really like the channel, keep it up!
Do i have a recorder ... no
Do I want one just to play this song... yes
I love British Accent
There is already alternative lyrics which were sung by the original artists on later occasions. "You're cheap and you're haggard"
Hi Sarah can you review the Helder recorder and the eagle recorder? Both in alto and compare with a traditional instrument???
Hi sarah iam your fan from Indonesia
Oops, no links at the end, Sarah - but otherwise a simply spiffing video to enjoy - thank you!
Four years old! Wow! 😲
It seems just like yesterday. Time flies by when having fun with Team Recorder. Wishing you continuing success! 😉
BTW: “The very nasty homophobic slur” comes in verse five of the song, not verse two.
Happy holidays! 😊 ♫ 🎄 🎁
Since you still play tin whistle, do you have any tips on keeping the fingering systems straight while just beginning recorder?
I’m definitely not offended by the original lyrics 😎
HI Sarah, thanks of your chanel and some other ones like yours, I learned the bases of recorder and I even started to play some songs and tunes, however whatever I try it's almost impossible for me to play the notes on the second scale /the high notes/ I can reach since the G high, but cannot go furhter I see you are playing even the highest notes on recorder, can you please give some advises, thank you in advance
For irish music you should take a irish tin whistle! Thah would make it mush better and give it a mor irish sound
Looked on the shop - any chance of FLAC download rather than mp3? It would be a shame to hear you compressed!
Good point- I’ll ask my producer!
I can't get through this video without jizzing

Also canon in D and other stuff
I have got a recorder, but it has only eight holes. Is this a problem?
Fa# is Fi eg "I" is for the incidentals eg C scale chromatically----- DO DI RE RI MI FA FI SO SI LA LI TI DO ( that's why there is no 'MO' for E or 'TO' for B, they are half steps) But you know that lol
I notice you move around a lot when playing, is that a performance thing or a technique
its still a tad harsh i feel.. how about "not keen on your jacket".. much more christmassy and festivy fashion forgiving methinks, what? ;)
I love it, it sounds so british too 😂
Please can I have the music notation so I can play it at my own speed x
Damn, her air-piano and air-drum 😂
Soon we are going to be entering "the next decade!"
We're there. It sucks.
hi Sarah
❤❤❤❤❤😘
You look beautiful
I find folk harder than classcal
