Even the humblest of old homes filled with old things feels more homey and comfy and more beautiful than the most expensive new-build with the most high-end artwork and furnishings.
It’s the workmanship, craftsmanship, quality materials, and artistry that went into every little thing from tile, wood inlay and carvings, to a pair of socks or shoes.

It’s neat that it’s a house museum, not of a manor or chic townhouse, but a tenement.

I'm not usually interested in many museums outside of my own area... But I'd love to see this one. To stand in a home where people worked lived and raised their families... What a wonderful way to learn of this countries history.

The courageous people that came here to seek a better life really is what America is about. When I saw the book called " I learn to Write" ..I got emotional. It really tugged at my heart....their hard work and struggles.

I was exploring some of the city a few weeks ago and while looking at nearby sites of interest I came across this museum. I ran out of time to explore and couldn't afford admission anyway, so I didn't get to see it. I love seeing the full dimensional experience of how people live and their personalities in combination with the eras they live in, especially others in poverty. As someone who is probably of an adjacent economic class as many of the migrants who historically lived in these buildings, and couldn't afford the $40+ fee to get to enjoy this museum: Does anyone know if there are any free digital walkthroughs or records to learn more about the history of tenement buildings and their residents in NYC? Maybe a book I can borrow from a library? Photography archives, etc?

Many of those tenements did not have proper ventilation or running water. The “privy” was outside the building, and there were maybe four of them for the whole building. Filth, overcrowding and disease were common. I do not know the statistics, but I’d like to know how many residents actually survived those conditions. It did get marginally better with the laws enacted later to include air shafts and indoor plumbing.
