    Oh yes, my 4 ducks DESTROYED the grass section I give them. I put a ramp to the pool too. Nice place you have made for them. Worm farm is SO essential . I enjoyed the video. I let mine out at noon, till they go in at dysk.

    I had to chuckle a bit when you talked about them helping grass grow. Our entire lawn was destroyed in a couple weeks. Just mud.

    Love your ducks. I use my shed for their housing and added a run. In the shed I put down a vinyl sheet floor, added horse pellets to absorb and pine shavings on top of that for bedding. Smells great and less adding and cleaning. The run right now is just dirt and weeds. I'm going to use construction sand for drainage. No food or water in the shed and no food and water when they go to bed. In fact my ducks put themselves to bed and i just lock them in. I have two windows, one full stationary screen door, and two solid doors. I only close the one solid door for now. I have 1/4 inch mesh everywhere. The mulch method is too much for this senior grandma. I feed and water them out of big rubber bowls and l have a baby pool for now. Once I add more of my yard, they will be able to use the pond I already have. I only have 4 Khaki Campbells, 2 boys 2 girls. I'm adding 3 girls in the spring next yr.

    Thank you for this, I watched part 1 and now 2. My ducks are on there way, 3 coming and just waiting for a hatch. Good job on the pen/coup great idea here! Always still concerned about them running off...

    If you soak your grain in water for 24 hrs then give it to them it will stretch your grain usage and they get more vit and minerals out of the grain an it's more satisfying
    Because they feel full faster.

    • @TexasPlantCo

      jeremy essmann they are too fat as a breed to fly. Basically like a chicken, they can kinda long jump while flapping.

      No, these are runner ducks (layer 300). They won’t be able to fly, too fat I guess :).

    I raise chickens and I'm about to switch over to ducks. A little trick I learned about the predator control on the base of the coop - use large gravel or what they call "wash rock". You need to spread it about 3-4 inches thick and 1-2 feet out from the base. We have raccoons, possums, foxes and coyotes thick as molasses here and I've never lost a bird to any of them. They simply won't dig through the rocks to tunnel under. Some folks even trench it in down a foot for extra protection but that's really overkill imho.

    • @TexasPlantCo
      @TexasPlantCo  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seal-ed thanks that's a good tip. Are rats able to dig through that?

    • @Seal6Sniper
      @Seal6Sniper 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never had a rat dig through it. It's just too much work for them I guess. Now, the mice will scale the 3 foot high hardware cloth I have around the base to go through the chicken wire above it to go steal their food but even that's rare since I have 5 barn patrol cats who do a great job of keeping that population in check.

      I got a question for you. Are the white layers good for meat or just eggs only? I'm at a toss up deciding between them and Pekins. I know the White Layers lay more eggs but they're smaller than the Pekin eggs, right? What made your decision for you on them?

  • @Vvelocity75

    Hey there! Quick question, am I able to dig out the dirt that has all the duck poop and use it as soil for plants?

    • @TexasPlantCo
      @TexasPlantCo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Luis H you would probably want to compost it for a bit, might be really rich in nutrients.

    • @TexasPlantCo
      @TexasPlantCo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      could burn the plants if you don't compost

  • @JanColdwater

    You don't let your chickens out with them? Maybe divide the yard, Ducks on the garden side with water and chickens on the compost side? And I know you said it but... what is the breed?

      Truth Seeker a pool was enough, they muck it up pretty quickly. you would need a big pond or filter good.

      rao m ali ali ducks can swim pretty much right away. You just need to make sure they can get dry and warm quickly.

    • @TexasPlantCo
      @TexasPlantCo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      rao m ali ali the feed i used was organic or pesticides / medicine free chicken feed. When they were babies they got baby chicken feed, older they got chicken layer feed.

      Terrie Friday they were cool about it, but honestly if i didn't go out there the same time every day the ducks would freak out!! If you have neighbors i would recommend Muscovy ducks, totally quiet.
