Great track, i used to listen this album on my work everyday 10 years ago, it was best part of the year, so adictive it helped me to inspire on my designs or just relax, cant belive how times fly
I got to see you guys play in denver a few years back, one thing you said stuck with me, along the lines of "playing these songs from so long ago takes you back to the times in which they were written.." I dont remember what song it was exactly, maybe a request, but it looked like it hit you. same goes for listening to them...I look forward to your guys songs being considered oldies...I wonder if they'll still bring a tear to my heart then for the things I remember

I'm not going to say you are wrong, but to me I think that if they wanted to "Play it safe" they would have easily have given us another "Grow up and blow away" or "Live it out". I love the fact that the lyrics are becoming abstract, it gives us multiple interpretations.
They probably wanted to try something new, which is allowed. They made another great album with good music. A different sound, yes. But I think you'll like most of their music if you really like them. I don't think it's bad but that's just my opinion.
I appreciate how this album plays upon a theme, a feeling. The "soft major chord " progression, and "unchallenging music" lends to the thematic atmosphere of the overall album. Although I don't agree with your statements, I see your points. I find it as accessible and inviting as any other Metric album. I see it as a progressive step for the band. I love it, especially this song.
I think this song may be about karma, like if you're going to steal then you'll pay 2x for what you did? Or maybe it's a moral lesson, like if you steal something from someone once, pay them back twice? Kind of the same idea.. And it ends on the positive with 'The future is mine", so I'm happy. All's well that ends....well.
It's a possibility I considered also, but then if you were getting time for stealing in jail then the future wouldn't be so bright and you wouldn't be inclined to say that the future was yours. Also, Metric seems to be more optimistic than that, especially these days.
Just an idea: maybe it isn't a happy ending. Maybe the person is in jail ("I got nothing but time"); they're paying twice by getting caught and then going to prison.
sure they can try it, but im also allowed to not like it. They can also step back and hear what they're producing somewhat objectively - they'll know its not as cutting or interesting as their older material. maybe they like it that way, makes them more money.
I agree :( I feel like they played it really safe on this album. What happened to the Metric that used to risks?! Where's the Emily that repeated the line "Now that you're wallet is all lit up" about 10 times in a row. Where's the unpredictable melodies we heard in Soft Rock Star or the catchy guitar riffs we heard in Empty? Not to mention the lyrics have become way too abstract. This track, Speed the Collapse, and Lost Kitten are the best songs on this album imo. The rest are just...mediocre :(
I just meant their sound sounds a bit more domesticated now and there's nothing that really stands out. Take calculation theme for example. That's a tune that stands out. And sometimes I get tired of having to "interpret the meaning of a song for myself". It just seems like pretentious hipster bullshit to me. Has writing sincere lyrics that people can relate become too mainstream or something? "Patriarch on a Vespa" is a great song lyrically and you don't need a rosetta stone to interpret it.
not at all. first listen, really disappointed. very soft major chord easy melodic unchallenging music, breathy singing, all of Emily's vocal talent wasted sounding the same on every track, same with the song structures. their older stuff so much better :(
Someone over at Subnormality/People Watching really likes you and this song.
Same. Song touched me so much.
can confirm
I can't believe its possible; Metric just made another album JUST as good as Fantasies. awesome...!

Yes, because musicians are NEVER EVER allowed to try new stuff, just because it might upset their fans.
They probably wanted to try something new, which is allowed. They made another great album with good music. A different sound, yes. But I think you'll like most of their music if you really like them. I don't think it's bad but that's just my opinion.

Nothing but love for them
:O so good!
