I know this video is 3 years old, but I am so grateful for it! I finally can make things for SL and NOT have to buy an expensive program that I have to buy a new license for every year! Thank you so much!
Thank you for commenting. I do plan on making some more vids soon. I don't do them often, but I am going to show how to do all this more easy fast and with the latest versions of these programs.
Thank you for the great tutorial. I realize it's over 6 years old and a lot has changed, but I had been struggling pretty ineffectively to learn Blender and found SketchUp a MUCH easer entry point for 3d modeling. Reading through all the comments and answers and doing some foundational SketchUp tutorials, I was able to make use of the instructions with just slight adaptations and created the object. What's even better is that I'm being able to make some simple objects of my own by applying what I learned. THANK YOU!
OK Well it worked in the end. The .dae file was all I really needed for both sketchup and blender, of course. Thank you so much Yoyo. Your tutorial was awesome and you made a subscriber out of me. You have given me a better understanding of meshes. I'm moving onto sculpties next once I grasp all of the concepts of mesh :)
dude Blender is like putting a 3 year old in a airplane cockpit and telling them to fly lol all in all I am very happy i ran across your vid, ts helped me understand so much
please help. i am trying to make a dome type mess iteam that is squashed on the top. i made it and like how it looks. but uploading it it it turns out like it is inside out. SL name is Lonemysticheat. please help will pay for time.
Again you can reach me in sl and I will try to help you, but Alec Damondred is correct you can do it in blender, or you can check double sided faces on the sketchup export menu.
Yes the speech is a bit muttery, but the basics are covered. Thank you! The version of Sketchup I got hold of has the option to export as DAE directly so that cuts out the middle man! Unfortunately I don't have the option in Firestorm to change from convex hull to prim. How do I get around that?
I use blender to convert the file because SketchUp does a terrible job triangulating the models, and makes to many duplicate faces. also it will fill holes in the physics files making it impossible to walk true openings, as for firestorm I have the latest version and there is a option in features to change the physical shape type to prim still.

to create one for your mesh, knowing what you can and can not do. I can explain, but its not something easy to explain. so it would be better to do that thru something other than youtube comments .
I am doing what you are step by step but when i upload it, it looks inverted and missing a bit. i am making sure it is the right file and everything. something is not right. I am taking a shot in the dark. and to be honest. really frustrated.
yes having issues. the mess prim design i am trying to make and upload is very simple. but when i upload it it looks like it is alpha or something. hard to explain.
big thank you i can finally use sketch up and make stuff for SL, my 3d work in sketch and blender are good but could never seem to upload to sl now i can. again real cool vid. now i just need to get better at scripting and poses.
When I save, it's not recognizing any of the material (textures) that I've applied, making the entire thing one solid texture face when I put it into blender and Second Life. How do I fix this?
Didn't do too bad for first try, two parts the textures flash, only need two textures to texture the walls and one piece wont texture, and i can walk threw some of it ... what did i do wrong?
It may be useful to add that I went ahead and followed these steps, but in version 2017 of Sketchup you don't seem to be able to use the older plugins the way you explain to install them in the other video. So I went ahead and uninstalled it again and picked an older version.
I send you a message inworld, but I'm not sure if you read it? Really hoping you can help me, because I can't wait to use the build I made! [2017/07/15 11:59:05] Pink (proudlypink.sheridan): Hey you! Ive been following your tutorial on sketchup, and im at the part of exporting I used now Sketchup 8 because the newer versions just wont run smoothly on my laptop. However it has only 2 options for export.. dae and .kmz. Do you know a fix for this? Also, you have a video on plugins.. Can i use these plugins in sketchup 8? Are there different steps?
nice tutorial but the plugins link does not work. Can we get an updated link to the plugins? It takes me to a page to download and the download never happens it just keeps opening adds.
+James Thompson IV I've just checked the link and I had no problem downloading. Since I am not the creator of the download link I cannot change it, but it is working, make sure to click the green download button. not the other links and advertisements on the page.
Might be a silly question, I noticed that the textures did not port over to SL but was wondering if you had to apply textures in SketchUp to be able to apply them in SL? Or can I skip that step and just apply in SL?
just curious... how do you get the green and blue background? ive spent countless hours searching for that option until my free trial expired but never had any luck
When you first start the program you are asked what layout you want to use use one of the top 2 meters or inches. If you don't have any option you need to go in to settings and turn that choice on again.
im sorry... im not trolling i promise but what does meters or inches have to do with having the green grass like field and blue sky like fields on your screen rather than a solid white background? im not trying to change any measurements settings, I'm simply trying to alleviate eyestrain by getting a better set of background colors lol.
No problem, it has no difference. You can use both. The important part is your choice when you first open Sketchup there is a dropdown for template choose one of the "Simple" templates simple being the first word in the name of the template. And you should be all set.
yeah im really sorry i just found that option, newest problem ive run into is installing the plugins, your video covering it does not seem to work for sketchup pro 2018 and ive already burned trials on the 2016 and 2017 versions. main thing i need is the workplane but the newest version of sketchup doesnt seem to recognize the .rbz zip folder or anything inside it as a valid sketchup/ruby file. thank you for the replies and being understanding, i dont remember seeing the option to get the background colors before but i guess i overlooked it.
with 2016 you can use it thru the trial. only for commercial use does the trial apply the only difrance is you cant export dae files but you can export obj. but in sketchup 2018 navigate to C:\Users\*your user name*\AppData\Roaming\SketchUp\SketchUp 2018\SketchUp\Plugins you will have to show hidden folders to see the appdata folder you do this in view at the top of the file explorer and tick hidden items. don't forget when you are done to restart sketchup you will have to enable the plugins by clicking view and toolbars in sketchup. I hope this helps you.
Hi, I made on object in SketchUp and there's this part which is like a cuboid but it is separated into 2 triangles. When I upload the mesh into SL, one triangle appears and the other does not appear. Any way that I could fix it? Thanks. :)
yes, your problem is your normal are flipped, I make a point in this vid to tell people to have the white face out. that is important. some times people get to adding textures before making sure there model has all white faces out. if the grey or bluish side is out you will have the problem you are having. right click on those faces and select reverse face. That should fix your problem.
okay what do you mean by that ==> I recommend the oldest one, next go to the location it is installed in, than go to plugins and put the content of the plugins file you downloaded in that folder. :) restart sketchup.
okay, i'm good with that part, but it's the plugin explanation in the program's folder i'm not getting... and what year is the SU 8, i downloaded the 2015 version...
I know this is an old post but I tried downloading the older version like it says and it looks totally different. Anyone know if this still works and if so can I get some tips on setting up the program to do this tutorial? Thanks!
You can use the newer versions, go to tools and make sure large toolset is checked. You will need to do a work around for the plugin, if you search my videos i have a video on how to add old plugins to the newer versions of Sketchup.
AEsims3 have you tryed the colours i tend to find if i turn to white and full bright the textures are there? also when uploading to mesh theres a place to click to include textures.
You need to mess with the LOD or level of detail, also make a physics file. the lower your LOD the lower your LI, also the lower your LOD the closer your fall off will be when in world.
Thanks mate i was doing all that the objects i was making was a bit shape heavy, i worked out if you upload in "Operator Presets" SI - Sim Static - made it so much lower - appreciate you replying tho and thanks for the video!
Timothy Johnson on physics tab i had to change the method to "solid" and i got it to upload now. but for some reason i cant see my floor or ceiling lol. they are there like you are confined within the building you just cant see them.
Nice tutorial Bro....thanks and i hope that your next tutorial will be about how to build a house like you show on your video? Peace From The Netherlands
I tried Blender - Followed tutorial to make a simple cup, you have no idea how happy i was that it worked - Now trick to any education is can it be repeated??? 5 times i ran the tutorial, and ended up with 6 totally different cups. to this day i don't know how i ended up with 6 cups from 5 tries, but i did. I like the look of this, and am looking forward to trying it, But i do have a simple question... Why bother to texture it it in the first place, if you only have to retexture it once again when it is imported into sl??
You need to make a texture map. Instead of showing the complicated way their blender it is much more easy to make the map in Sketchup. You see sl needs to know the size and orientation of your texture.
so I have to pay to upload and test textures? :( thats kinda lame. is there a way to preview them on the model so i can mess with them to try and get the look I want?
yes you can edit your model and select texture when the window comes up choose upload as temp. but the texture will be erased in a couple days and you cant share them with any one but you can surly preview:)
YOYO Crescendo I don't see any upload as temp options anywhere. Do you happen to know of another 3d viewing program that will render assets similarly to second life? I have some commissions for second life objects and I have them looking great for unity and maya, but I just need a way to adjust textures in real time to get the right colors for second life, and re-uploading each time I make a small change to the texture is going to get costly fast.
wiki.phoenixviewer.com/texture_picker it is now called local you can use blender to view but you will need to know how. do you have Skype? I would love to help you.
you should of put do not disturb while doing this video that way no group invites can not contact you until you click off the do not disturb it was distracting to see the pop ups in the video when you put the skating rink in sl
as there is a new version of Sketchup you will have to get an older version. help.sketchup.com/en/article/60107 I recommend the oldest one, next go to the location it is installed in, than go to plugins and put the content of the plugins file you downloaded. :) restart sketchup.
I got all excited about building in SketchUp until, I got to the part in the tutorial about saving the file as a 3dS File. Apparently that is only available in the "PRO" version on SketchUp and costs $560. Bummer!!! Great video though!
You can also export in .OBJ it will act and do the same or even with .DEA :) no need for pro version all that gives you is the extra tools! sketchup in its intirety is free.
Yoyo, have you made the tutorial on how to install the plug-ins yet? I have them downloaded hoping there was a manual of some sort included lol but unfortunately I don't see one xD You can IM me in world if you want, my name here is my SL name :)
@@TeslaKuhn8 There is a link to download older versions of Sketchup in the description. if you use it you c an export obj. I wish people would stop trying to skip a step and go directly in to SL. SketchUp is a building program, Blender is a editing / design program. both are required. if you need help you can contact me directly thru skype yoyo.crescendo
nope, I gave up..... you gave us no idea what we might expect to be able to do by the end of the tutorial so we set out to draw a square that wasn't a square, in blue, which it shouldn't have been in blue... and were still saying "The first thing you're going to want to do...." I got about 5 minutes in and just gave up as I hadn't a clue what we were supposed to be doing or not doing. This was very unstructured and didn't seem to be going anywhere and I'm tired and don't have all night to listen to someone muttering as they make it up as they go along.
@@YOYOCrescendo Actually - I may have found what I want.... though it might be back a stage in terms of being all about Blender, while I really wanted to focus on building just for SL. I like building in world in Second Life and in other games too. So, I thought I'd give it a go.

I know this is 3 years old now and I just found it. I would like to point out that Sketchup DOES have a free version in SketchUp Make. According to their FAQ the only differences are:
1: If you use SketchUp for commercial purposes, the End User License Agreement for SketchUp states that you need to purchase SketchUp Pro
2: SketchUp Pro is bundled with LayOut, an application for creating 2D presentations of your SketchUp drawings

Why is it you had to flip the texture faces in the begining? What happens if you dont?
if you don't the faces will be backwards out any you will be able to see thru your mesh as faces in sl are not 2 sided.
So by default it was facing down?
yes because it thinks you are going to make an object with a bottom.
Ahh gacha, very cool.
got a tutorial on making furniture like chairs and couches?

OK good. I see tutorials a lot and usually the time I see them they are outdated, because we all know technology flies faster than time.
Man how do you keep the LI so low?
You need to mess with the LOD or level of detail, also make a physics file. the lower your LOD the lower your LI, also the lower your LOD the closer your fall off will be when in world.
Thanks mate i was doing all that the objects i was making was a bit shape heavy, i worked out if you upload in "Operator Presets" SI - Sim Static - made it so much lower - appreciate you replying tho and thanks for the video!
Your welcome.
thats not even remotley low a model that small should be 0.8 or lower
hey, i cant seem to upload my building. it says it failed to upload: multiple errors while validating asset. upload_invalidAsset
Timothy Johnson on physics tab i had to change the method to "solid" and i got it to upload now. but for some reason i cant see my floor or ceiling lol. they are there like you are confined within the building you just cant see them.
I would have to see the moddle to see what went wrong. you can contact me in sl if you like ill try to help you.
YOYO Crescendo i IMed you on SL and also sent you a copy of what it looks like
Would love to see you do something using blender :)
Sketchup has an ability to export collade files too, does that also work?
Sidney Verheggen yes but it will turn each materal in to a separate object
Nice tutorial Bro....thanks and i hope that your next tutorial will be about how to build a house like you show on your video?
Peace From The Netherlands
I tried to download sketchup make and it auto switched to trial version :(
when making a house does this mean you can live anywhere for free ?
shyannedianne1962 I wish
+shyannedianne1962 are you familiar with SL ? .. no land is free unless its temporary (few hours at the most)
ToddiousMaximous Ob if I was I wouldn't be asking :(
+shyannedianne1962 There is other similar to SL where you can live for free, Osgrid I think. And OpenSim too.
Soustropique I might buy a tent and just live where I want lol :D will try those other places later, thanks
where can i find the textues?
LOL Did Jeralee get their cuddles?
Thanks, informative
Does sketchup work for Mac?
Hunni Daniels Yes Sketchup does work for mac.
@@YOYOCrescendo TY - Makes Sense
How do I upload textures?
to secondlife you would go to build, and upload, images. in sketchup go to file, import, make sure file type is a image file type.
so I have to pay to upload and test textures? :( thats kinda lame. is there a way to preview them on the model so i can mess with them to try and get the look I want?
yes you can edit your model and select texture when the window comes up choose upload as temp. but the texture will be erased in a couple days and you cant share them with any one but you can surly preview:)
YOYO Crescendo I don't see any upload as temp options anywhere. Do you happen to know of another 3d viewing program that will render assets similarly to second life? I have some commissions for second life objects and I have them looking great for unity and maya, but I just need a way to adjust textures in real time to get the right colors for second life, and re-uploading each time I make a small change to the texture is going to get costly fast.
wiki.phoenixviewer.com/texture_picker
it is now called local
you can use blender to view but you will need to know how. do you have Skype? I would love to help you.
Awesome Video, Thanks so much
you should of put do not disturb while doing this video that way no group invites can not contact you until you click off the do not disturb it was distracting to see the pop ups in the video when you put the skating rink in sl
Vicki Hill Ya I didn't think of it :)
what version are you using?
I made this Video years ago at that time I was using v8.0
OK how do i install the plugins?
as there is a new version of Sketchup you will have to get an older version. help.sketchup.com/en/article/60107
I recommend the oldest one, next go to the location it is installed in, than go to plugins and put the content of the plugins file you downloaded. :) restart sketchup.
I added that information to the contents ty:)
thank you so much!!it helped me a lot man
I would show off my builds but due to unemployment in RL SL is on hold, and I don't have a place to even call 'home' anymore.
I can't export in .obj or .3ds Only export extensions are .dae and .kmz Yes I am a very newbie at this LOL
still need to find out how to export to Blender
try exporting as an .obj than using blender to convert it to a .dae file
Thanks. Great video.
I did add a note to the video at the point you described :)
YOYO Crescendo
Awesome!!! Thank you! I am all excited again :)
no problem:)
plugins do not work
"open mic night"
Yoyo, have you made the tutorial on how to install the plug-ins yet? I have them downloaded hoping there was a manual of some sort included lol but unfortunately I don't see one xD You can IM me in world if you want, my name here is my SL name :)
I Have not made that video yet I will im you:)
I could make it out of 7. :) anyways, tryed getting Sketchup, seams now you have to pay for it if you want to export... >:(
I so suck to walk through the wall I am not good to make physics
google has caught on to everyone using this for second life, and are now forcing you to buy a license in order to export as files second life can use.
You can use blender to convert the file
@@YOYOCrescendo what does it need to be exported as for me to be able to open it in blender?
@@YOYOCrescendo looks like it's going to be .stl as all other options are locked
.DAE
@@TeslaKuhn8 There is a link to download older versions of Sketchup in the description. if you use it you c an export obj. I wish people would stop trying to skip a step and go directly in to SL. SketchUp is a building program, Blender is a editing / design program. both are required. if you need help you can contact me directly thru skype yoyo.crescendo
nice very very cool
nope, I gave up..... you gave us no idea what we might expect to be able to do by the end of the tutorial so we set out to draw a square that wasn't a square, in blue, which it shouldn't have been in blue... and were still saying "The first thing you're going to want to do...."
I got about 5 minutes in and just gave up as I hadn't a clue what we were supposed to be doing or not doing. This was very unstructured and didn't seem to be going anywhere and I'm tired and don't have all night to listen to someone muttering as they make it up as they go along.
I am sorry you didn't find it helpful, I hope you find what you are looking for.
@@YOYOCrescendo Actually - I may have found what I want.... though it might be back a stage in terms of being all about Blender, while I really wanted to focus on building just for SL.
The guy seems to be very structured in his approach. I like that.
th-cam.com/video/TPrnSACiTJ4/w-d-xo.html
I used to be a Trainer, however, I've had a stroke, so I don't learn so easily these days.
Actually, at my time of life, I probably shouldn't bother, but I do want to create some items in SL and maybe it is about time I got over mesh.
I like building in world in Second Life and in other games too. So, I thought I'd give it a go.
great video, but you could of at least upload another for 720p a tleast and link it in your description or in annotations.
if you click the gear at the bottom of the vid you can choose your quality. the vid is in 720p. :)
YOYO Crescendo its not, it was uploaded wrong. i know what your saying. this one is 480p maximum. :(
devin3627 who cares though, at least none of the other videos are. lol
devin3627 I see I will try to fix his one sorry for the trouble.
Errr, Sketch Up is not free, it is a 30 day trial. Just saying.
+Teresa Arthur This is true, at the time I made this video sketchup was free for home use. almoast 2 years later now it is no longer free, but if you get the older virsions like in this video they are still free. Ill work on a video update, thanks for your advice.
buddy there are may people in sl who are totally clue less about creating why dont you share with the people you meet......and from now ill also do#totalrespect
I help a lot of people on sl learn this. And other building techniques. Thanks
why ...a 5 prim object for 7 prims in mesh and then you say its not perfect hahaha...back to sculpt studio
:)
