    This may be one of my favorite videos yet.
    Something about it feels much more passionate than the others. All of the changes sound exciting to me, but i felt like the videos discussing mechanical changes felt very ego strokey. I loved hearing the way they talked about their work in this video.
    It also gave a bit of perspective into the new layout which is exciting, along with a few sneak peeks if you could read past the blurs.
    Really excited to see these new books.

    • @PokeRedstone
      @PokeRedstone 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      The mechanical ones have to put on much more of a front. They can’t acknowledge any choices controversial because the marketing department won’t let them. So instead they just try to hype up what they can. I also don’t blame them for not being 100% bought in when filming them. They recorded multiple hours of footage for those videos and it’s hard to stay genuine and excited the whole time.

      Also don't forget that Todd works for WotC, and they are having him play the role of "the excited fan" so no wonder it feels ego strokey, when one of the employees of the company that makes the game is constantly going "oh wow", "that's amazing", "perfect". That's the company essentially saying that about itself. Lol

    What appeals to me about games like D&D is just how customizable they are; I've been working on my own sort of setting for D&D that is a kind of setting I haven't seen a whole lot of, but I also felt the need to give it a twist that I've heard anyone really doing before. Artistically speaking, I don't think I can do anything on my own, but I am hoping that once I introduce this setting to enough people, they'll want to share their artistic renditions of my setting with me, which I am all for, it would really show how collaborative game like D&D are that community we all feel it can be.

      A lot of the artists that WotC hires are contract-based and maintain their own Artstation blogs or personal websites. They're not usually completely comprehensive, but even if WotC doesn't put up online resources showcasing all the art like they do with newer Magic: the Gathering sets, I personally find a lot of success looking up a work's artist and going through their portfolio for a minute or two.

    Like Dark Sun is brutal & gritty & muted; Ravenloft is dark & brooding; Dragonlance had a strong aesthetic from the classic fantasy authors.
    The PHB aesthetic here seems largely much more cosmopolitan, bright colors, with more home-y/SIM non-adventuring. Beautiful, but often a different style and feel than many earlier settings and editions.

    Wow. That art is so beautiful. I am an artist that does fantasy. This art speaks to me. DND and MTG (Magic the Gathering) have near identical art styles. It is about fantasy where the characters look very realistic. By realistic, I mean that they are not cartoons. This looks like a live action fantasy movie. I think of the Lord of the Rings movies. There is also the Harry Potter movies and the Game of Thrones TV show. The DND Honor Among Thieves captures this perfectly. That was a good movie. The art style of DND and MTG works. It gives off the feeling of a classic fantasy game. That is really awesome. I am also a fan of World of Warcraft. That art style is realistic too, but it is a bit more cartoony. It is a great style. I especially like how beautiful the backgrounds are and how flashy the magic is. World of Warcraft has amazing illustrations. I have a Blizzard art book, and much of it has art of that particular game. There was extremly strong contrast in value. The light areas with magic are really light, and the dark shadows are really dark. This really taught me how great a strong value contrast is. It makes the picture more vibrant. MTG has some cool things about its art style. There is a very good use of color. That indicates the kind of magic involved. MTG has a unique system of grouping cards into five colors. There is green, red, black, blue and white. This is mainly grouped according to mechanics. The art style does reflect that in the use of color. I am especially fond of the guilds of Ravnica. There is a faction for every pair of two colors. Each one has a strong visual identity. It is almost as if it has its own brandimage. That includes it own color palette. This new DND book has a great style. It is interesting how that works. It is realistic enough to fit the brand image of DND. Yet I have noticed that the images are so much more colorful than before. It nudges into the fantastical a little bit. I think that is intriguing. I think it is good for making DND look less generic. A strong brand identity and image is really helpful. I hope this new art takes DND in a whole new direction and breaths in more life.

      @@LUC1DBOX Damn I had not seen that, that is a bummer tbh because although the lack of practical uses Keen Mind was one of my favorite feats for a level one character flavor-wise when it came to a hyper-intelligent individual.
      I also just took a look at the UA where it talked about feats and saw it is the same with observant which makes it seem like they're purposely trying to prevent ASI increase feats at level one which while understandable is unfortunate.
      Perhaps the supposed backwards compatibility would allow me to choose to 2014 version of Keen Mind due to there being no level restriction as well as the fact that it is a fundamentally different feat that is more flavor oriented than mechanics one although I am not sure how the backwards compatibility will work when it comes to aspects of the game with the same name such as feats and spells.

    • @LUC1DBOX
      @LUC1DBOX 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@declanmorden yeah ASIs and 4th level feats are supposed to be reserved for a point of 'character development' like the milestone of leveling up. Plus, if you could get them at level 1, then everyone would just go human so they can get +2 +2, or +2 +3 at level 1.
      But.. We're now able to get +1 to 3 stats instead of +2 +1, so it's now pheasible to have someone with 3 stats at 16 if they don't mind having their others be 3 subpar stats

    • @declanmorden
      @declanmorden 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@LUC1DBOX I totally understand it from a balance perspective but I really wanted to convert my 5e character to the new rules and being able to have two different +2 ASI bonuses at level one is just too perfect given that his starting ability scores were 10, 12, 14, 14, 16, 18 and are just really nice and clean values.
      If I were able to take a feat that gives a +1 ASI during creation it means at level one they'd be 10, 12, 14, 14, 18, 20 with the 18 being WIS and the 20 being INT. Then it means I'd only need a single ASI to bring up my CON from 14 to 16 bringing my total stat distribution to 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20.
      Since this is my ideal stat distribution, the rest of my feats can be cool gameplay things for flavor and mechanics like spell sniper, war caster, elemental adept (although maybe not the 2024 version because it would ruin the stat distribution lol), etc.

    The art looks beautiful, and so much about the books is so well done, but I have one sincere plea: PLEASE fix the Ranger before you go to print so that Ranger players aren't saddled with another 10 years of bad design.
    One small change would probably go a long way: "At sixth level, a Ranger who is concentrating on Hunter's Mark can concentrate on one other Ranger concentation spell at the same time, or vice versa." That would allow the Ranger to use their other concentration spells without giving up access to their main class feature (Hunter's Mark), but still keep the Ranger from doubling up on damaging spells by multiclassing.

    Page numbers toward the edge, huzzah! Perhaps letters along the page edge for alphabetical listings? Asking for a friend.

    When will we see a preorder for the alternate covers? I want to get the bundle but I think the alternate covers are much better.

    Sounds good. One of my biggest complaints about the 2014 core books was their underwhelming layout.

    Wait... THIS is where Josh Herman has been hiding?! I mean, he's perfect for this, but I miss his ZBrush streams from Gnomon too. 😢 I'm glad I'm a sculpting nerd AND a D&D nerd so I could find him! 😂 Great book and great artwork, everyone!

    I wonder if it was intentional that the covers of the Player's Handbook and the Dungeon Master's Guide appear to be from the POV of the other cover's characters? Even if not, is is a very pleasing visual symmetry!

    As much as it is nice to have artwork for the classes\subclasses and spells, I miss the artwork from 3.5 for the equipment. It is good to see the armor and weapons being drawn once again.

    So much of this art looks great, but I'm somewhat disappointed that Abyssal and Cthonic tieflings are not nearly as alien in appearance compared to Infernal ones as it seems like they ought to be.

    Huge shutout to the one miserable guy in the artwork at 12:16 who has obviously put a bet on whatever is happening and is very clearly about loose a lot of gold, I love that
