Horror Classic Review: DRACULA'S DAUGHTER (1936)
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 14 ส.ค. 2024
- The last of Junior Laemmle's classic horror films at Universal, Dracula's Daughter has a troubled production history and a dubious legacy of failure. However, it remains an important landmark, not just in terms of horror cinema, but in terms of making vampires more relatable and interesting.
If you're looking for a "review" in the traditional sense, then let me just say I like this movie. This video, however, is a "review" in the literal sense (using the Miriam-Webster definition "a retrospective view or survey"), in that I'm going over the history of the film and its place in sci-fi cinema history.
In other words, please stop commenting on how my videos aren't what you consider "reviews."

Strap in for more Universal Classic Monsters later this month. Which one is your favorite?
Frankenstein 🙃
Really?...I have to choose a favorite??🤔...Well...if I must...Dracula🧛😁🧛🤣🧛😁🧛🤣
You can't go wrong with Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein.
I'm not an expert but Bela Lugosi, in anything more than a cameo, probably would have drew attention away from the title character and the main plot. The character reversals IMHO was a good angle. Yes, it is one in a line of movies, and TV episodes, where someone else does the protagonist's dirty work.
This was very good! I have always loved this movie because Gloria Holden is so good. Never been crazy about the Dr. Garth character. This and House of Dracula both have vampires looking for a cure which I always found odd. After all they are dead.
I agree but in Zalenska's case, maybe she wants release not only from bloodlust but eternal life, that is, before she met Garth!
I actually met Gloria Holden in person at her house. Her son Chris was my classmate in my biology class my freshman year at the University of Redlands in 1966. She was very charming and beautiful. I met her husband too. Later on, unfortunately, I met her again at her son's funeral, in I think 1970, when he lost his life in a tragic car accident. Then I met her again a year later at her house again at party for her other son, or maybe it was a nephew. She had recovered from her mourning, but I think she was still heartbroken inside. She lived a long and productive life, both artistically and spiritually. Her best film role and the one she liked the most was as the wife of Emile Zola who was played by the great actor Paul Muni. I kind of wish she had liked her Dracula's Daoghter role more.
In the film, Countess Zaleska dies alone on the balcony. There is a production still of her being held in Garth's arms as she dies. I wish they would have added that. It would have been worthwhile to hear her last words.
I did not know that. Thanks!
Marguerite Churchill isn’t all that well known these days, but she was in at least one other big film of the period, The Big Trail, where she was John Wayne’s love interest and -allegedly- in real life as well, at least briefly. I’ve warmed to this movie over the years, and now it’s one of my favorites. So atmospheric… I’ve always wished they had lingered a bit on the tapestry in Castle Dracula which shows Lugosi in period dress as Dracula. I wonder if it still exists in somebody’s collection
The first time I saw 'Dracula's Daughter' (1936) was on TV in 1963 or 1964 when I was 7 or 8. It was on early Sunday evenings around 5pm on a local Los Angeles, CA. TV station (KTLA Channel 5) that showed the classic Universal Studio horror films, and that horror TV show was called 'Weird, Weird, Weird World'. Not too sure, but I think they showed double features. Even though it was more of an adult type of a horror film, I actually liked it when I was a kid. It is an enjoyable film I think, and it would be fun to watch during the Halloween season. But it just might not be for everyone. I stream 'Dracula's Daughter' ever so often when I am in the mood to watch it. Does bring back my early childhood memories in the 60s when it comes to old horror films from the 30s, 40s and 50s.
Just watched this for the second time in probably 10 years today and I really enjoyed it. It’s a very entertaining film. Interesting to know that the lead actress didn’t want to talk about this, because she did such a great job as this character. I thought she was very compelling and I actually cared. I guess things were different back then.
It's interesting to realize that Dracula wasn't in the public domain when this movie was made. Nowadays anybody can make a Dracula movie, without any restrictions.
That is true. I saw the film 'Dracula 2000' in the theater when first released, and I thought it was an awful film.
Yes it was. Stoker's copyright extended to the UK and Europe, but not the U. S. Universal paid Florence Stoker (his widow) a handsome royalty although they were not legally obligated to do so.
Happy October, everyone! Another perfectly balanced review.
They could have included Lugosi if Dracula's part was to show up and mock her efforts to not be a vampire. The plot could even have Sandor arrange for Dracula's appearance somehow. Sandor could even smirk as Zaleska is "corrected" by the vampire who turned her. A line could even be: you wanted this gift, to be young an beautiful forever, and now you turn your back on it.
It would be a bit part for Lugosi though and he probably wouldn't want to do it.
Howdy there Tug!👋 It's kinda hard to believe that I've never seen this movie! I did notice however, that it is currently showing on Peacock, so I'll most definitely have to give it a watch before the end of the month!...I'm excited to see what other tricks you pull out of your hat this month, and wishing you and yours a bright and beautiful month of October ahead! Take care! Ms. Elizabeth 🕸️👻🎃🐈⬛🧟💀🎃
You are awesome, Muzikgirl! October is such a special time for me. I hope you enjoy.
@@TheUnapologeticGeek Hey Eric!👋 October through January are very special months indeed! I love them all! I'm a big fan of classic horror/suspense/thrillers too! Hoping you have figured out who I am on your list of FB friends by now! 🤣...Thank you so much for calling me "awesomeness"! It truly means a lot!🤗 Wishing you and yours a frightfully fun weekend, and sending greetings your way from sunny Southern California! Take care! Ms. Elizabeth 📺📼📀📺📼📀
To give the doctor his due, Universal horror isn't exactly known for riveting heroes. Nobody thinks of The Raven and The Mummy as David Manners films, if you know what I mean.
I saw the dummy used for Lugosi in a museum in Hollywood. It's kind of surprising how badly it's sculpted.
That said, this is one of my favorite horror films. The vampire's tormented search for redemption is compelling, and her holding a crucifix while turning away from it perfectly symbolizes her own internal conflict. I think I will add it to my list of films reserved for Halloween viewing.
Well, you've sold me on this. It's one of the few Universal Monster films I still haven't seen. I'd say my favourite is the 1931 Spanish-language version of "Dracula", although that definitely would have been better if Lugosi could have been in it.
I was stunned the first time I saw the Spanish-language Dracula, because it is so much more well-done than the English-language one! Like you say, the only thing missing is Bela.
I am glad you posted about this lesser know film. I have this film & Gloria Holden is the only reason to see this. It could have been so much more. One thing, when you mentioned James Whale's 'Showboat', I've seen it & think it's a very good film especially compared to the 1950s version. I studied film at UCF & U of Rochester and have always heard ppl talk about it as the far superior film. Also, it was a hit at the box office. I don't see any evidence that this was the film that almost ended Whate's film career. My understanding is that 'The Road Back" was the clunker when it was taken out of his hands due to the Laemmle's ousting at Universal. I really appreciate your videos about the Universal monsters. Thanks so much.
Nice one. Cheers. Like many children of the 1960s, I haven't seen this classic. I want to get hold of a copy and will persevere. So it is always good to know that Dracula's Daughter remains highly regarded. Cinema was not kind to horror, what with their being slasher flicks, schlock horror and low-budget gore-fests during the 1980s. I much prefer a good story as opposed to rapid stab, stab, choppy, choppy killers. But that's just me.
I'd love it if you covered Werner Herzog's Nosferatu remake.
Good idea. I'd love the chance to talk about Herzog!
Thank you for your review. I do not normally watch horror. It tends to freak me out.
Great reveiw again Eric.
I look forward to these more and more each week.
Have you ever seen or heard of a sort of obscure 60's movie titled "Seconds"?
I think its an absolute classic.
I dont think you have reviewed it but I could be wrong.
I haven't even heard of it, I don't think. I'll check it out!
@@TheUnapologeticGeek
Oh do! I think you will like it.
Directed by Frankenheimer so it's got some gravitas with that alone.
It's a cool film
The woman who asked the countess if she wanted a sherry in the final clip
was also pretty famous for her other part time job. That's Hedda Hopper.
Thanks for the credit notes explanation. I was pretty curious why you were doing so well
on "Lugosi" but not so much on "Bela". I guess I'll have to leave the pillory in storage...
I was going to ask about the pronunciation of "Lugosi" as "Loo-go-she." You appear to be saying that is the correct way to say it.
@@matthewfranzese7928 It is for Hungarian. I still say it like "bella lugosee", because I speak English and the Hungarians aren't paying me a dime to say it correctly... 😁
@@indyspotes3310 Thank you very much for the confirmation. Very weird to know that I've been pronouncing his name wrong for all these years. Probably not the only one. Is the first name then pronounced "Bay-la" or something else?
@@matthewfranzese7928 bay-la is correct
A Dracula Movie without Bela Lagosi.
What were they thinking?
Interesting review TUG ( kind of partial to the acronym now, or would you prefer Eric?). I went through a research phase on most if the classic Universal films, but you have clearly gone deeper. (I had an idea to modernize the Frankenstein story that I worked on for a while).
You mention suggestions about classic horror films. The first thing that popped into my head were the Exorcist films, for a variety of reasons but that I had discussed it during Retro Nerd Girl's stream yesterday. While she seemed (maybe politely) interested in some of what I mentioned, she also stated she had lost her interest in that franchise. I think it's worthy of a review over several videos and may be more up your alley. Let me know. I'd love to talk to you about it.
I have no problem with people calling me TUG. Pretty sure Thrash made it my official name online. "Eric" seems weird now.
I would like to talk about the Exorcist films. I'll keep it in mind for future projects and let you know...
"I had an idea to modernize the Frankenstein story that I worked on for a while"
Please tell me you wrote the script for Frankenweenie...
Given that we're immersed in the denouement of the zombie popularity explosion,
coming up with new ideas for reanimated corpses is challenging indeed.
@indyspotes3310 sorry Indy. I did not write Frankenweenie. It was actually Frankenhooker...
LOl, not Frankenhooker either.
I had this idea 30 years ago, toyed around with it, then dropped it. I thought it might give some idiot the wrong idea.
@@seaninness334 Frankenhooker is one of the greatest films ever made. You cannot disagree!
@TheUnapologeticGeek 😀 just teasing Indy a bit. He's a funny guy, and I thought he would appreciate it. 😉
thanks for posting I really enjoy this film on multiple levels.
I can't help but think the missed opportunities the studio had by not getting some of these actors to be in it although I think Lugosi's presence would have overpowered Holdens and Cease Romero would have been an interesting protagonist.
The Joker in a Dracula Movie.
That would have been fun to watch.
I haven't seen this yet, perhaps one day. Sounds like a troubled shoot.
Please check out our re-creation of the scene with Countess Zaleska and Lili in "Dracula's Daughter": th-cam.com/video/0ACAJ6MYws8/w-d-xo.html
Doing it now... I'll give my thoughts in the comments. 👍🏻
Sweet review 😊
great video like always.
Have you ever covered Battlestar Galactica?
Not yet, but I do have the original episodes... 😎
(I do love the remake, too, but it's not old enough for my channel to cover it.)
🧛🏻♀️
Review World without end please.
Definitely better with Lugosi
