  • Sometimes you need a reason to pack up all the gear and go shoot some wildlife. Despite the rain, this morning provided some great moments with the fauna of the Texas Hill Country.

      Thanks Travis, sometimes you just get lucky! Definitely encourage you to pick up a camera. It can be daunting at first, but I’m all self taught and learned everything I know through trial and error and TH-cam. See ya again soon!

    New 'friend' from Los Angeles where we don't have much wilderness to enjoy. Sometimes its just cool to be in nature even of you don't snap a single frame. Cheers 🍻

    I just found your site and It is very impressive, I added a subscription and I am looking forward to more of your videos. I was especially interested in the performance of the Sony a74 and the 200-600mm lens. I am considering that combination, I have been a Nikon shooter for many years but have resisted going to mirrorless until recently. It is near impossible to get Nikon lenses in Canada and the only camera that is wildlife (Z9) friendly is extremely expensive. How have you found the A74 for birds in flight? Everything else appears to be excellent. Thanks for sharing and I look forward to more of your videos.

      Hey Keith, thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment!
      The sony a74 paired with the 200-600 is a great "budget" option for us wildlife shooters. My first question would be are you doing video and photo, or just one or the other? The rolling shutter for birds in flight will be noticable, but I've found that its manageable for this price point. My most recent shoot (not posted yet) got some shots of great egrets flying over a lake. Maybe it was the distance I was at or my panning, but I did not notice any rolling shutter that would render the clip unusable. Photography specific, this camera is great. I normally prefer to shoot in uncompressed RAW for any landscape work, but with wildlife I shoot in compressed RAW with the sony a74. This enables me to get closer to 10 fps. At 33 mp, this is definitely more than enough for web use and printing. Autofocus is incredible and the camera body has been spot on in all three options (human, bird, animal). I've set one of my custom buttons on the camera body to toggle between the autofocus subjects, so workflow/ergonomics is fast when shooting both birds and deer (or other).
      If your budget is around that 5k mark for camera body and lens, I fully back this setup. With that said, once I'm not in grad school and can financially afford the upgrade, I will jump to the a1 (or its successor). If fps is not a concern of yours, the new A7R5 has some seriously cool features like internal focus bracketing/stacking and new AI autofocus.
      Either way...come join team Sony, haha!

      @@liamdmcinerney Thanks very much for your lengthy reply, I haven't done a lot of video work but would like try my hand at it this year. I would love to be able to get into an a1 but in Canada you are looking at nearly 10K with taxes, to far out of my reach. The A74 and 200-600 are right in my budget and I think will cover all my needs. I have looked at the new A7r5 and I might be able to stretch my budget to cover the cost. They seem to getting lots of good reviews and I am happy with the 10 fpm with my Nikon d500 so it will probably work for me. I am retired and 75 years old and only do wildlife photography for my own enjoyment so I don't need the top of the line gear to enjoy my hobby. Thanks again for your excellent reply. I am really enjoying the adventures of the young TH-camrs such as yourself, you should have a look at Jimmy Breitenstein's Channel, he is becoming one of the best wildlife TH-camrs.

      @@keithmacdonald4805 Sounds like the A74 paired with the 200-600 will be perfect. I just saw that Sigma released a 60-600mm lens. Not sure what your focal length needs are but that could be a great option as well and its about 4-5 hundred dollars less. Thanks for the tip, just followed Jimmy Breitensteins channel! Keep me updated with what setup you end up going for. Happy shootin

    Good stuff Liam, I like your pop up blind, which one is it and how's the comfort spending long hours on the chair?

    • @liamdmcinerney
      @liamdmcinerney  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! It is the Tragopan Grouse V+ and the blind itself is spacious and breaks down (compacts) well. Theres enough room to stand up with your back slightly bent to stretch the legs. The chair on the other hand isnt as comfortable. But I need a portable chair and the more comfortable chairs are not convenient for hiking into locations. Its a give and take
