    Yesss! There is a really difference. After the lessons is sounds much more like music. It is always good to have a teacher.

      Having a teacher is definitely going to push me, but that’s no bad thing, I suppose! I was surprised how much he could help straight away.

    I enjoyed hearing you play more van Eyck. When you get phrasing right it makes the piece come alive. I am glad you have a teacher to help you on your journey. It is because of you I am playing van Eyck all the time. I have bought two recorders to play it on and i am going to play " Engels Nachtegaeltije " on my earily music group's spring concert. That and maybe a little " The Bird Fanceier's Delight ". I started playing when I was about your age , now I am 67 and a lot of music has past through my fingers. I look forwad to your videos.

      I pretty much fall in love with every Van Eyck piece I hear… lucky there’s a good few to go at! I’m currently stuck on the last modo of ‘Engels Nachtegaeltije’- can’t persuade my fingers to move fast enough. Maybe I’ll get them trained up one day! Hope your concert goes well, sounds like a good pairing of pieces.

    Yes, I could hear the difference, it was more flowing, even though I'm still a beginner which made me think about getting a teacher.

    You can tell you've had tuition. But to be honest. I think you went about it all the right way. Learning on your own first. Learning to read music and learn the recorder finger notes first. approaching a tutor only when the time is right and you were ready.

      I’m pretty happy with waiting a bit to start lessons; not much point in standing in front of someone just trying to decipher the notes!

    You're much more confident that is evident. I'm a beginner novice myself so my point of view is only from what I hear. It certainly flows an awful lot better. I thought the first effort was very admirable. Well done.

      Thank you! I’m still practicing this piece most days, and I can no longer tell if I’m making positive changes or changes for the sake of changes 🤪

      Ah thanks, sometimes it feels not fast at all, but you know what it’s like!

    It really does sound good in the after video! Also I know it's the angle but it looks like your music stand is absolutely enormous there :D

      @@ClaythorpeMusic Nah! You're moving along at a rather swift pace in my estimation. Thank you, Lauren, for sharing your videos here, which are an inspiration for me to not be so lazy myself about practicing.

    Yes, definitely see the difference, I think you are doing amazingly well. Your earlier comment reminded me after I had been riding horses self-taught or learning from fellow riders. Then when I went to ride horses at a cavalry unit, after my first trial it was, hmmm, yes, I think you need to start having some lessons before you ride any of the horses!

      It is always very helpful to SING the melody befor you play it with your Instrument. Then you can recognize the musical phrases much better.

      @ClaythorpeMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DoubleFovea I agree, though sometimes my um, ‘interesting’ singing manages to mask anything useful!

      Thanks! I know what you mean with the horse riding; I used to have a scruffy pony and would entertain myself for hours riding out and about. Then someone said how about trying show jumping, so went along to watch some. Another league that I knew I could never be part of! Kind of took some shine off horse riding for me as a kid. This time, with music, I’ll carry on working at it…(Luckily recorder playing is cheaper than a horse haha!)

    I’ve studied music off and on for years I’m 66 now your playing is a lot smoother now but I still don’t like that kind of music I realize the copyright have expired and they don’t have to pay royalties but just because something is old doesn’t make it good I know people that like it but dragging your finger nails down a blackboard is more pleasing how about some Celtic songs or country Jazz is good hip hop leaves a lot and rap is usually only one or two notes played longer or shorter and not great for instrumentals. As I said you’re playing is getting a lot better I was always told to practice playing songs like those the schools do be as if you learned them wrongly it wouldn’t matter because after the class you’ll probably never want to hear them ever again well it worked on me that way but what’s better playing something you like on your plastic recorder in the shower or restroom or in front of an Orchestra. But hey I joined a glee club mainly so I could play my harmonica’s and other instruments afterwards in the auditorium. Being able to read music and playing anything written is great 👍 I know a lot of musicians that have been preforming for years very few can read any music and I’ve only met a couple people that teach music that have ever played professionally maybe I’m a little bitter about schools but I’ve learned more about playing musical instruments of of TH-cam in the last few years than I got from music lessons the last 45 years if you want to learn different names for breathing and fingering by all means go to a teacher but if you want to learn how to play good find someone who plays. Remember the old saying people that can do, people that can’t teach. I remember when the Beatles came out all the great music teachers got up and blasted them for doing everything wrong the last few years they have started saying how great the music they wrote really was and this month Disney has put out a documentary they made 50 years ago about them. If you keep practicing you will get better try coping some of the flute and some of the Chinese flutes other than the ones that have the drones in them the way they play the notes changes everything and you can make them all sound almost the same from the recorder, tin whistle, ocarina flute and a lot of others sound almost identical with a little practice

      Oh I still get copyright claims on some of my videos where I play music that is hundreds of years old! Occasionally when someone has recorded an album of Van Eyck, for example, TH-cam credits them with the copyright. A bit annoying! I try to play a lot of different styles/ genres. I love so much different music, and sometimes find I grow in appreciation for something the more I practice it. I’m currently watching that Beatles documentary. It’s truly great to see how they worked- but mostly I’m enjoying watching all the ‘bad habits’ they have while playing their instruments. A teacher would tell a student off for it, but there they are producing great music… sometimes it’s just finding what works for you, isn’t it?
