Thank you for documenting your journey through Grade 1. I'm delighted to discover that a digital upload will suffice. I think that would be much less stressful than a face to face examination. In this sinario, what happens to the Aural side of the examination?
I'm also a self-taught recorder player. I didn't consider grades and such being undertaken at a distance. My notation reading is not up to scratch, but my playing certainly is. I know that people pass by listening to midi files of the notation. I'm not suggesting you do this... though I'm not saying it's a bad practice either.
Personally I try to use midi files with caution! I’m trying to improve my musical reading. So before I listen to any recording of a piece I don’t know, I’m very strict with myself to make sure I play it through a few times, then I use a recording or midi to check if I was reading rhythm anywhere near correctly. So midi I think can be useful for that, but I have a fear of accidentally learning to play like I’m computer generated, haha. However, I’m a big believer in there being no right or wrong, or one, way of learning. There are some fab musicians who can’t read a note. So clearly learning by listening is very important too!
Thank you 🤞 When you feel ready to take the exam, you pay for it via Trinity’s website. Then it takes them a few days to send your login details. From receiving the login details, you have two weeks to send the video. I don’t think there’s anything to stop you filming as many attempts as you like during that time, you could even film the video before paying for the exam. I did two takes- one to make sure the audio and camera were ok, but the camera needed adjusting a bit, so I did a second take. It wasn’t perfect, but I think I could have found something I didn’t like if I’d filmed a hundred times... so I just sent it! Just as long as your final video is one continuous take and has no editing at all, it should be fine 🙂
Ah thanks, hope you’re right! No variations for grade 1, first modo only, phew! I’ve only learnt that and the first of the variations so far, but hoping to get the rest down eventually 😅
Hi, sorry for my late reply! I personally think the Aulos Haka series of recorders are brilliant! A very good quality plastic recorder at a reasonable price. They are reliable and play well. Good luck for your exams, when you get there!

Hi, I have two questions: 1) Is there an age limit to these exams? I'm only fifteen ears old, but I'd like to try the exam and send it over to Trinity to see my results. 2) Do you get some form of diploma or anything when completing this?
Hi, good questions! There is no age limit for the exams, they are open to anyone at any age, anywhere in the world, I believe! The exams are all properly regulated by OFQUAL (an exam regulatory board), and you get a certificate when you pass. I think I’m right in saying grades 6-8 earn UCAS points, which count towards university applications (in the UK, at least. I’m not sure about elsewhere in the world, or whereabouts you are!) If you are thinking about studying music at uni they usually like to see a grade 8 pass, dependent on the course, so it can be helpful for that too! They are great for personal development, in my opinion. You would probably get the most from them by working with a teacher, but people do work through by themselves. Good luck, if you decide to give it a go!
Yes, you can play from memory if that’s what you prefer. I’m sure Trinity mention that’s fine, but you get no extra credit or marks for doing so. I think they just want to see the music stand to make sure you’re not using any extra notes to help, and to see the version of music you’re playing from. Hands/ face is for seeing technique and breathing, I guess.

If the mocked-up video was close to the real one, I’d say did great! Bravo 👏🏽. You’re so brave-I’d have been a nervous wreck.
Aw thanks! I don’t know how people go through the face-to-face exams, I’d have a lot of nervous-shaking induced vibrato...

Good job! I don't think you have anything to worry about :)
Thank you! Fingers crossed 🤞😅
I don't see how you would fail--this was great!
If there’s a way to snatch failure from the jaws of victory, I usually find it 🙃
Can you video as often as you feel like or has it be filmed in a given time? All the best for the results.!

Great job! I’m sure you passed👍🏻 I’m curious, did you also play the variations of Daphne? Some are very challenging and I would not say grade 1!

The music stand, your hand and your face should be visible at all time. Are you not allowed to play from memory without the music stand?
